The 250 GTO is an easy subzero. Didn't even have to think about it. Ridiculously expensive collector car, but owners actually do race them and daily drive them.

Of course, it's not as cool as an Alpine A110. Hardly anything is as cool as the Alpine A110.

I wouldn't say it's nearly as suspect as the person I was grilling, but that's speculative obviously and probably bias. As for my mind, it's probably because I'm sane and question people.

The one I worked on, and driven, but only for a couple of K's ( :(), gets to see a lot of track time. We were preparing the car for I believe the classic endurance of Spa. It also was pretty much track spec. Mufflers? Barely. If there is one engine that will give you goosebumps it is a 60's Ferrari V12.

Considering that the TR & P-Series cars that beat them were built specifically for racing unlike the GTO which had to be homologated for Group 3, I'd say the fact the GTO still finished 2-3-6 in '62, 2-4-6 in '63, and 5-6 in '64 is still admirable. I doubt Ferrari cared much either considering they completely dominated the podium 5 consecutive years with & without the GTO. The car was built to compete in the World Sportscar Championship & it won its class every year it had remained in production; a great feat in itself.
 
Some incredibly expensive cars spend their days in air-conditioned personal museums and never put tyre to tarmac.

The 250 GTO, on the other hand, gets the crap beaten out of it at events like the Goodwood Revival every year. It's old and expensive but ultimately it's designed to be used, and people do just that. SZ.
Overrated, ugly, usually not seen in motion, trailered everywhere, kept in AC'd storage vaults. Seriously uncool.

They tend to win a lot too, so I'm not sure where overrated comes in. And you'll note all the above are road-registered. I suspect at the very least Nick Mason uses his on the road.

Not even sure what's wrong with it being stored in an "AC'd storage vault". I had a grand's worth of MX-5 stolen from outside my flat at uni. It got constantly rained on and birds used to crap on it*. Give me an air-conditioned garage every time.



* There's a Newcastle girls joke in there somewhere...

I remember watching a film when I was 15 or 16 that featured many lovely old cars, including a 250 GTO, with a group of older people by and large completely disinterested with cars; however the 250 GTO and several other hugely expensive vehicles went right over their heads. But when an Alpine A110 appeared, they quite literally paused the video and started commenting on the artistry of its design.

I couldn't believe my eyes at first, but then I realised; the Alpine may not be anywhere near as powerful or rare or valuable as some of the other cars I had spotted throughout, but that didn't stop it from actually being far more beautiful.
 
I personally still think the 250 GTO is a more beautiful car than the Alpine A110, I literally don't care if everyone else in the world thought that the Alpine is more beautiful I still prefer the 250 GTO despite the stupid price tag.
 
I really like how these cars have been driven hard literally their whole lives and they still manage to be in perfect condition. I guess that's where the millions come in.
 
There were prettier 60s Ferraris, but the fact that many still get raced and used bumps up the cool factor. Still hoping to see Craig McCaw's 250 GTO around here though.

There's not much else to say, but: I've seen one in person, photographed it, and it was 1987.
