But that's what you think. Others may think it's wrong but you don't.

Yes, but that's not what cool is. Liking your own car is having satisfaction, not making it cool just because it is so.

Yeah, we've gone a bit off-topic here.

The car in question usually isn't your car.

Yeah, we've gone a bit off-topic here.
Move it to a PM? That's kinda weird though. :p

I'm going to bed anyway, it's past midnight.

That would mean anybody here who isn't Japanese should not be qualified to have an opinion on the car.

Considering there aren't many people voting on this vehicle that have even been to Japan let alone are of Japanese descent...you fill in the rest.

As I see it, coolness is based on three factors: if I look good driving it, if my friends look good driving it, and my friends' reaction to seeing me drive it. This car fails all three factors.

Well maybe for a few of these cars you should modify your criteria a little.

And also I bring up the 'Merica factor because, as implied by yourself (Spoiler: that means you didn't actually say the word but you meant it) one of the reasons why this made in Japan and only found in Japan vehicle is Uncool is because you will get laughed at by people in the US.

Now, considering that there are none in America to my knowledge and it's only found in Japan, I fail to see how the opinions of US citizens would matter when you are on the other side of the world in a small country with very heavily congested cities where Kei cars and trucks thrive.

Alright, what makes this car cooler than the other Kei cars? Why is it cool in Japan, then?

It's a functional utility vehicle that is easy to navigate with an intriguing design. It's cool. How could it not be?

Oh and it's by far not the coolest of the K-class cars.

I don't care if it can go down streets in Japan, that doesn't make it cool. Almost anywhere in the U.S. you would be laughed at for driving one of these, as well as honked at because you are in the way. The same goes for any place that has a highway. And no, nobody (as in over 90% of the developed world) has heard of this car.

What makes this cool? Too many cars here get voted cool because they are old; I don't see any other valid reason to vote this cool. No car with a 56 mph top speed is cool. Period.

Sounds a bit ignorant and naive...

Also obviously you don't read the threads enough because many valid reasons are given. I guess your just here to pick a fight, for Murica culture none the less.

Alright, what makes this car cooler than the other Kei cars? Why is it cool in Japan, then?

There it is, differing taste and culture. One person already said they don't "like it" cause it isn't a V8 truck...which is rubbish reasoning.

Because that's what coolness is all about- what everyone else thinks. It doesn't matter what you think- if you think your Prius is cool, you are wrong.

Why are they wrong because you don't agree with an opinon? By that logic the F150 in your avatar is uncool because only uneducated, tobacco chewing, rednecks drive such trucks and it's a late 90s early 2000 model nothing the less so now it's seriously uncool. You see how ignorant that is, and that's about how you sound in this moment, but I'm sure you're okay with that.

No, no valid reasons are given. All I'm hearing is that it looks cute and is a Japanese from the 60's. You still haven't answered my question. And I'm not here to pick a fight, I'm here to defend my opinion that this car is a peice of crap. If I were here to pick a fight, I would make it pretty obvious.

I disagree with the majority. Get over it.

There is nothing for me to get over, you want to firmly disagree that's fine but there are people here that will do the same and not let it rest. Welcome to GTP

As for the reason I voted cool, it is a classic mazda and cool utility vehicle that does job it was intended for from back in the day but also displays the culture and period of time that only started to help make them popular makes. Though this wasn't sold outside the asian region from what I remember, this is the styling Japan was known for at this time and made it popular all over the world for the period in other vehicles. Which can't be said by most Japanese cars and trucks today that seem to play the market and take influence more so from the outside world to make money, but there are few that aren't like this.

It is a vehicle that can be modified easily and done so quite well like many Kei cars, but even in it's standard form it has decent looks that stand out more than most Kei cars. Also for a two-stroke that was Mazda's first at the time it did the job well and didn't need tons of power for it. It's a cool little truck what more needs to be said? In summary It's a functional piece that doesn't need some massive engine to do it, it's historic, can be modified, is well built and displays what Japan automakers were about during that time in history. A car or truck that can do that is cool in my book.

Why is it cool in Japan, then?

It encapsulates what the Kei truck was all about: functionality and practicality in a compact design with a compact engine that was perfect for the driving environment it was in.

It also happens to have a funny expression on its face.

It is not cooler than other Kei vehicles because things like the Midget II, Daihatsu Move SR-XX and Autozam AZ-1 exist.

An adorable Japanese Kei car (well, truck) from the 60s/70s? Easily cool.

Its not beige enough to be meh, and there doesn't seem to be anything uncool about it other than a lack of power. It has a cute and appealing 60s design that gets your attention and gives off a similar vibe to a Beetle or something similar. It's not the coolest car around and it definitely isn't sub-zero, but it has something for it.

I have the urge to put a motorcycle engine in it (600cc will do, upgrade to 1000cc if "needed") for a crazy drift-thing.

Just imagine:

The engine from that bike (Yamaha YZF-R6, it has 122 HP @ 14,000 RPM.), in the Porter. I think it would haul more than just stuff.

RE: It's cool because it does its job well: that's not what coolness is. It's the same as with modern displacement downsizing - it's uncool no matter how well it works. Like I said in the Miata thread, coolness is, at least partially, about attitude. I'm sure it did its job well, but considering that its job was, for all intents and purposes, that of a dockyard truck, that's not enough to make it cool.

Given that bike engine only has just over 40lbft of torque at over 11,000rpm, I don't think it'll be hauling much... The Porter Cab's predecessor, the B600, weighed 535kg/1,180lb. I doubt they made the Porter Cab lighter. An engine designed to power ~270kg/~600lb of bike and rider is going to be hopeless at getting 600kg/1,322lb of kei truck and driver around anywhere - and that's before you load it with anything.

That's why bike engines in cars are pointless - they're designed to produce lots of power, but with hardly any weight to move there's no need for much torque.

Hayabusa engine. Problem solved.

Some portuguese stuffed an Hayabusa engine to a Smart ForTwo and the thing had more power than necessary.

@AlvaroF I just now remembered how badly I need one of those...

An Hayabusa or an Hayabusa engined Smart? (Personally I want both)

Paint that centre panel on the front black. Pickup with googly eyes and a mustache.

Cool for ridiculous cuteness appeal. You don't even have to drive it.

There's more to an engine than the horsepower figure; torque is so much more important..

Good god I sound like an american barge defendant

Yes, that amused me too.

Big lazy V8 pickup with no power = it's all about the torque
Small 2 stroke pickup = needs more power, to hell with torque

Meh. It's just doesn't do it for me.

While it is true that you can't define yourself as cool (only other people can), you can make up your own mind about coolness. If that weren't true, Justin Bieber would be the coolest person on Earth, just because other people say so.

It's the same as with modern displacement downsizing - it's uncool no matter how well it works.

I'm sorry, are you driving around a ten liter truck? No?

Alright, what makes this car cooler than the other Kei cars?

It isn't. Because it's not a Midget II. It scrapes by on barely cool because it's got a funny face.

Currently, it has a 33% vote for cool. So using your logic, you're opinion on it being uncool is wrong because majority vote is cool?

Logic

"Meh". A pathetic pickup that fulfills the job it was created to do.

Lots of silliness in this thread.

I feel like our Murica crew here would be the type to eat at McDonalds if they went to Paris.

Have you ever entertained the possibility that neither you nor your friends are cool?

You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me bra? You talkin' to my bra?

Wait. What? Umm... Of course I don't consider my Prius cool. I consider it comfortable, practical, efficient transport that does everything I need. (Although I'd rather it were an estate.) I don't consider my Prius cool because it's also extremely boring, but the hybrid tech makes it more interesting than a Camry, thus stopping it from going back round to sub-zero again. Also, I don't consider it cool because it's a car I can regularly be seen in the front seat of, and I'm a flatulant weeaboo who probably needs to get a job. And friends. And a life.

Anyway, the Mazda is the automotive equivalent of this gif, and therefore is cool:

I voted meh because it's like a Daihatsu Midget but it's not a Daihatsu Midget which lowers it's rating for me (I know I have a weird way of rating this car )

I can't decide. It's a cool, funky looking Japanese kei-utility car. On the other hand, I hate cars with facial expressions. With a passion. It should be a 'Meh' but it's a Mazda. And I'm a Mazda fanboy. So it's a very low cool.
