I think 5 years is a bit of stretch regarding the FIA GT. FIA's historic site says they grabbed the first win in 2000, & only made a full commitment to the series in 1999. Before that, they only did a couple rounds a year.
The company seemed more dedicated to running it in the BPR Series & Le Mans, which you're right, they did horrible in with the first 2 iterations of the car. And concur that after Oreca left, it was about as impressive at winning as Corvette Racing in Le Mans; easier feat when the manufacturer is running your cars and costs aren't a big issue. Even then though, the dominance of the Viper is pretty spectacular since it grabbed the next 2 Championships before the 550/575 came in.
Yes, the one closest to this model was the GTS, which failed to even
complete most races. The GTL, which was the aerodynamic one who's road car looks like this:
Was more successful, meaning the cars actually finished, such as 19th at 24 hours of Daytona. Although the cars failed at 24 hours of le mans. The company actively participated it racing events, they just weren't successful. The one you're referring to is the GT, which is what made the Storm famous.
As far as the "regular" road car goes, most people say it's ugly (I think it's the best looking car ever made, but that's just me) and I respect their opinions, but the thing you guys need to know is that it was function over style. Honeycomb construction, the carbon fiber bodywork is steel framed and designed to protect against impact, especially at high speed. the vents towards the front are designed to cool the front V12.
Having ridden in one and hearing from experiences, it can outpace and outcorner any Ferrari of the day, and is faster than a *stock* XJ220. Now, again, I respect peoples opinions but just now it was engineering first, design later. And design was for optimal aerodynamics. And also know that it was very well engineered. It was also very comfortable and luxurious.
To this day, 3 road Storms exist, and only 4 were built.
