Cool, no one's gonna suspect that thing has a JZ engine underneath, or if they do they'll be eating the Chaser's dust. That must be why they call it the Chaser =P
 
It's a Toyota family car, which by definition is perfect, so that makes it uncool.

However, it has a good engine and is fairly capable overall as a performance car while not being shouty about it. It's also loved by tuners, and can be made into something pretty quick. Most people outside the JDM world won't understand it, though.

I give it a cool, but only just.
 
RWD? Check. Manual? Check. Twinturbo inline 6 with plenty of power potential? Check. Not a supra or SC300? Check. Affordable sleeper material? Check. I give it high cool, not quite sub zero, mostly because enthusiasts will know that it is a MkIII Supra with sedan body bolted on.

Cars also weigh more these days. I would guess this is ~3000lbs. Most modern cars of similar style are lugging around an extra 500-1000 pounds.

It's more like 3200-3300lb range.

Also the specs I found were 0-60 in low 6's and a 1/4 in mid-low 14's. Not all that impressive.
 
It ain't a sports car, but it's aggressive enough to be cool. Aggressive RWD/MT sedans are cool. This is what a family car should be - something that allows you to haul the kids and groceries without completely giving up on driving as an enjoyable activity.

White and Nerdy is right. It doesn't need to be faster than other cars, it just has to be a little bit quicker than it looks. 275hp in a bit more than 3200lbs is definitely not your average Camry.

I'll put this out there as well. If it had 400hp it would be uncool.
 
Not quite. If it had 400 hp it would be even cooler. Some Pontiac G8s had more than that and they're plenty cool. Why, exactly, would more power make this car uncool?

For the same reason Vauxhall Monaros and Pontiac G8s are uncool. It becomes a car for car people. There aren't many people more uncool than car people ;)
 
Love it. Most definitely GT1 rose tinted glasses and too much time driving one, but this car is sub frigging zero.
 
@Zenith it already is. Non-car people would just buy a stupid Camry or something else cheaper.

As far as I'm concerned, there's very little cooler than a family car that doesn't mark the end of all fun in the driver's life, and more power just makes it better.

I'd call the design understated rather than bland, there's a big difference. MASSIVE sleeper cred and RWD helps as well.

Not enough to be Sub-Zero but a solid cool from me.
 
It's uncool, but I really don't know why- it just is.

No, but people won't know that unless you explain it to them, and that's when things start to get tragically uncool.
And even by the standards of 1990s Japanese car design, the Chaser was absolutely granny-tastic. Nissan pulled off sports/luxury (hardtop) sedan look much better with their Laurel and Skyline sedans.

The Chaser could easily be mistaken for a Carina E if you're not into cars, and then you'll again have to explain to your peers why you splashed out all your savings on something that looks like a car for a tenth of the price.

That's my position as well. Not all explanations are uncool - at least not if you consider a dose of right pedal to be an explanation.
 
FR Toyota over 270 hp, looks good, cool.
 
Just nudges a cool from me. It has this slightly boxy 90s vulgarity where I'm not sure why tuners pounced on it, but I am glad they did. Also low 6's 0-60 is plenty quick for a sedan like this. It's a fun kinda sleeper car in GT. I prefer the older ones though from the 70s-80s, they are much more solid "cool".
 
To me, the JZX100 looks modest but still nice. I never equalize "modest" and "dull". For people who are not into cars, it may look like an ordinary dismal "ass carrier" (just like the ER34 Skyline or the C35 Laurel)... untill you get it on the track.

I kind of have a soft spot for Chasers. It's not a flashy, look at me car.
