2004-2007 Porsche Carrera GT

Even though it was involved in the death of one of my favorite actors, I still have to give it a Sub Zero. Its basically a road legal race car.
 
I don't know......I mean it is like a street legal race car on the streets but with the Paul Walker and Roger Rodas incident, I'm kinda keen on giving the Carrera GT a SZ.

SZ to High Cool.
 
The 'Paul Walker incident' doesn't even cross my mind when i think of the Carrera GT. Never really liked it's roadster styling and the pop-up rear wing always looked weedy. Sounds great and modern rubber eliminates its on-the-limit handling issues supposedly. Uncool.
 
This on the other hand, a widowmaker without a bare carbon bonnet, that sounds steller and I absolutely love it. I also find them much more pleasing to look at in the flesh, it has massive presence. With this one cool is not enough. Sub Zero

Seriously uncool because supercar.

But would be my 1st purchase if my lotto numbers ever came up.

Even ignoring the amazing engine, the noise, and the purity of the drive train, the build quality of the CGT alone is something to behold... A F50 or even an Enzo is a kit car by comparison. Horatio Pagani said it was one of the best engineered cars of all time.

With a modern set of tyres (mps2's) they handle amazingly well according to the mags.

Maybe they shouldn't have been doing in excess of 80mph in a area where the speed limit was 30, on 9 year old tires.

It's a supercar. Yeah, I have an affinity for Porsches, but it's a supercar. Uncool--points because styling is fairly timeless.

Any who, one of my least favorite Porsche road cars since I was always a 911 fanboy growing up and still am to a reasonable degree, but the Carrera GT ends up cool because of the fact it was built to be a race car in road car clothes and not a track car, the engine was a wonderful work by Porsche, and simple design. It fails SZ because it looks it's age and thus you can tell it's not a super/hyper car from the past 5 years, never liked the MR-S rear end with the active rear wing and at times it's too simple in looks for what it is.
 
Insanely murderous Ferrari and Lamborghini killer? V10 power? Ear-deafening noise?

(although still not as cool as a Carbon X12... *cough* my bias *cough* )

One of the best sounding V10s and one of the nicest Porsches ever designed. But the whole Walker/Rodas situation hasn't helped it. Still a cool from me but just.

I don't think perceived widow making prowess necessarily has anything to to with it. No car in the world should be a 'widow maker' if driven at appropriate speeds with conservative inputs for the conditions of the road. The driver is responsible for both his own safety and the maintenance of his own car.

Driving around at 30mph, 50mph or 70mph with minimal throttle usage on the appropriate road should be perfectly fine in any car capable of those speeds. If you start razzing it on public roads with no safety gear, who's fault is it if things go awry?

No, this is a classic "love it but it's uncool" car. An awfully garish trinket.

Based on that conclusion, the early end of his career would be that much more tragic, so isn't that worse for the 550, then? Or is it different because he was driving? But James Dean's driving was arguably more reckless than Rodas', since Dean was allegedly zipping around traffic at 85mph and crashed into another car, as opposed to a tree. Is that cooler or uncooler? Is the 550 absolved of blame because it did nothing wrong (and safety standards weren't the same back then), or does that not make a difference because the Carrera GT was not in condition to be driven at speed?

Or maybe they're both just a car.

It's my understanding that Dean hit a station wagon that pulled out on him without looking (or at least didn't see him). Neither of them were really entirely to blame for their own deaths. Neither Porsche is to blame either, those accidents could probably have happened in any car under the same circumstances. The difference I as pointing out was that James Dean was considered one of the great actors of his time and Paul Walker was a very likeable guy, by all accounts.

It's fair to say nearly every model and make of production vehicles has been involved in a fatal accident. I'm sure more people die in a week while behind the wheel of Camrys, Accords, Civics, Corollas, and F150s due to their widespread numbers in traffic than a decade's worth of Porsche sales. Doesn't make any of the above more or less cool than another.

Cool but rather ugly car. With the exception of the 968, it's the most derivative and committee-styled Porsche, except this one is the very expensive one.
