Never did anything for me, and it looks like it's gonna be one of those cars I'll end up hating because everyone fawns over it. Meh.

Seriously. Quit looking at me like that.
Go ahead and hate, but you have to respect it. People don't flock to things for no reason.

Japanese manufactures can build very cool cars but they choose not to, because they choose to market to the average driver and not to the millionaires. If they were to build expensive cars we would be seeing some very high powered rx8's and maybe some very luxurious Mazdaspeed 3's and so on. If they were to build a high performance Rotary powered car, that would probably sell for a few hundred thousand. That car would be a street legal Furai and you sir would never look down at a rotary ever again. When comparing car's look at their price range and you'll see Japanese cars are well worth it.

I acknowledged Japanese manufactures can and do build cool cars. I'm not saying they are bad cars, cool != good. A Toyota Camry is a good car but it isn't cool at all.

And no, if I saw someone driving a Furai I would think of them as a colossal dork. That car is like the pinnacle of geekiness.

Watch out, Peoria, IL hipster is in the thread.

I voted sub-zero. These things are like MKIV Supra's. The demand for these keeps the price high, so for the most part they stay out of reach of ricers. And it's hard to imagine as popular as they are here in the states, Mazda only sold them here for two years (1993-1995).

It has an engine called a Wankel, how on earth is that even remotely cool? Plus it's a Mazda, which isn't exactly cool either. Oh and then there are the fanboys of the car! Like any high performance Japanese car you get the people who some how think it's a scaled down version of God. It's not as bad as anything Skyline GT-R related but it's up there.

Then there is the really dark side, it's associated with The Fast & The Furious, one of the most uncool, hated on car movies ever.

However, it does look cool and it has a design of far more expensive cars, especially when you ditch the pop-up headlights for those racecar inspired ones. You can also put a LSx engine in it and make it better it so many ways in my opinion, and any car that can take an engine swap decently well is cool too.

I think everything just cancels each other other in the end and you are left with a car that's pretty meh. I can't hate it because it has redeeming qualities but it has some pretty awful qualities too...come on! Wankel!!! Really? Say you have a Wankel to someone that knows nothing about cars and they'll probably call you a perv.

Why would you even be talking engine's with some one who doesn't know about them? That would just mark you out as a car bore regardless of the car or engine involved. I mean your average person probably doesn't actually understand the diff between a boxer, inline 4 or V12 anyway.

And we as car enthusiast cannot allow F&F to destroy a cars rep just because it's in it, I mean my god it had a Mustang in it and that is possibly the coolest car ever.

Car people are uncool people, and yes they talk about their engines. How many non-car people do you think ask RX-7 owners if it has a V8 or something along those lines? Then you have to explain it's spinning triangles.

And I'm going to let a movie contribute to the destruction of a car's reputation. I can't think of anything else the RX-7 has actually been in outside a bunch of street racing movies and a cameo in Office Space.

I'm just saying the car isn't cool, I didn't puke on your grandma.

Cool, and that's strictly based on looks. Hate the engine but love everything else.

Oh, and I'd be the first bloke to yank that Rotary out and replace it with...anything else.

Sorry dude I didn't mean my message to have such a serious tone. We're talking about 'cool' after all, it's all poops and giggles :)

But still the chick you are scaring into bed in one of these things is never going to know it's a Wankel under the bonnet unless of course the driver is a nerd who lacks the people skills to know what is relevant conversation material in that situation which is his lack of cool in play not the car :)

You mean like Keef?

Cool. No doubt it is such a gracefully elegant coupe, and I've always had a soft spot for the oddball Wankel Rotary. If someone were to put this up 10-15 years down the road, it'd be Sub-Zero.

In 10-15 years time though it would actually be more economical to burn the money that the petrol and oil a Wankel uses :)

Fine, I won't post in these any more if you don't want me to.

Its more like you recent attitude has been "most people like it so I don't like it." Or you claims you "don't get it."

The attitude bleeds hipster non-conformism.

This RX7 has always been one of my favorites. But the spoiler and the way the car sits low, just does not seem right. I like the later version with its improved spoiler and risen chassis.

The facelifted S8? They had the big spoiler but Mazda never increased the ride height...I can only assume the bigger wheels and lower profile tires made it look higher.

Sub zero. Simple, tiny engine that performs like 2.5-3l six cylinder engine, in a light, excellently handling chassis. While I admit that it has aged, the charisma is still there.

Cool, solely because it's a stunning looking piece of kit.

Also gets a commendation for supposedly being great fun to drive.

As for the rotary debate, I can take or leave that aspect. I think a rotary would be pretty cool, but then I also like the idea of dropping in a big V8 too. Either way, I'd be buying it for the styling and handling rather than the engine.

Is it possible I could change my vote now?

I just remembered...I had always considered the FD3S a great modern Villian's car. Which makes it at least automatically cool.

As for the Rotary...I'm kinda meh on it...that may be my biggest issue with the car, anyway. The engine they have just doesn't make enough power to make me sit up and take notice - the 3-rotor might have. and then there's that it's basically a 2-stroke with no pistons and slightly cleaner emissions. I mean...they use them in aircraft due to power to weight, but nothing bigger than a Light Sport Aircraft - anything bigger, and it's either a turbine or an oversized Volkswagen motor. (and sometimes V12s and Radials, but rarely since the 1940s have we seen those. Mostly in Russia.)

I'd have actually packaged the car with the Millennia's V6, but strengthened and tuned to rev more, and possibly without that wierd atkinson-cycle thing. or maybe with, I dunno. Kind of like an FMR version of the NSX.

Can't blame Mazda for doing what they did, though.

It's right up there with cars like the Skyline GT-Rs or the JZA80 Supra. A legend on wheels.
Sub-Zero for sure.
