Smallhorses and Parnelli Bone fight it out in France. Loser gets the girl at 4:05. Not a bad deal.

edit: Race done. My day off. Wife watched me until the first pit and thought I'm crazy. Until I pointed out the fact that she will sit in front of the tv and crochet for a couple of hours. Just tried to keep it legal. Was successful except on lap 5 at the ford chicanes. Sloppy going through them. But didn't result in a best lap time. Absolutely no drafting possibilties through the entire race. Running an underpowered car even at +3 they pulled away from me. Pretty lonely. Resigned myself to imagining what it would be like IRL if you could actually drive this entire track like Nurburgring. In a RL car.

Longest race I've ever done in GT4, I think. Seeing that I BSpeced the endurance races.

So for the multi-classers, what's your game plan? In other words, are you gonna do ST first? or GS? I'm starting with ST, and getting it over with, simply because it'll take less concentration on my part. It'll be a loooong race, though! I think I'll use hard front tires, too, to make the race that much shorter since I won't have to sit in the pits that extra minute or 2.

Well, I figured I'd do a play-by-play of my ST race. Seems appropriate.

Lap 1: Selected +5. This yields a white car (forget what it is) on pole, a Lancia Delta HF Integrale in 2nd, a Ford Taurus SHO, black Honda Integra, and a Toyota Supra SZ-R. EArly on in the race, the Taurus wiped out into the sand during one of those early curves, which had me laughing!

I made my way thru the crowd, slipstreaming behind and planning my moves whenever one of those huge chicanes shows up. Problem is, there's usually someone else ahead of me making their moves as well, which means there's 2 cars blocking the way instead of 1. Can't outbrake them without getting a penalty.

This went on all during Lap 1. Finally at the Ford Chicanes, I managed to pass the 2nd place Integra and gained a respectable lead. the leader in the white car, unfortunately, could already barely be seen.

Lap 2: My 2nd-place seemed to stretch, to the point that I feared the race might become a borefest, even this early. But by the time the MINI was passing the slight Mulsanne kink, I could see several cars catching up. The Integra eventually caught up and passed me! Looked as if the Lancia might do so as well, but I manaed to keep her at bay.

Lap 3: Did my magic at Ford Chicanes again. Really, it's the fact that the Ai brakes so early here. I'm going thru these chicanes cleanly, yet they always fall so far behind. :shrugs: Down the Mulsanne straight, I look behind to see the crowd can barely be seen. But unfortunately that white car is NOWHERE to be seen! Lap 3 is uneventful. Nobody catches up to me, but I don't catch up to the leader either. Best Lap time=5:18.936

Lap 4: the white car is now 16 seconds ahead! :grumpy: The rest of the pack is firmly behind me though.

The Ford Taurus makes its first pitstop! Lol. My front tires (SH) are green-going-yellow. Rear tires (SM) are dark green and probably won't be changed for the majority of this 17-lap race.

At the Mulsanne kink, it looks as if the leader (whoever it is) could be in trouble. I notice the split time was now +15.3xx, which means he lost a second somewhere. GOody!

Lap 5: The leader (it's a Honda Civic Type R) comes into the pits, and I snag the lead obviously. Looks like it'll be down to pit-strategy after all...

The other front-drives plus the Lancia also pit. And I (finally) see the Supra is starting to gain on me, somehow. It's only -2.888 seconds behind. :scared:

Halfway down the Mulsanne straights, the Supra catches & passes me. Hmm..seems it was perhaps bottle-necked behind all those other cars. We play cat & mouse now. down one straight I'll lead, and down the next, he'll lead. It's a scary proposition because I don't want him getting ahead of me just as I'm about to brake and possibly making a penalty-zone for me.

Thru the POrsche Curves, the Supra's shark-nose is right on my tail. But (again) I manage to stretch my lead after Ford Chicanes to about 3 seconds

Lap 6: the crowd goes wild! Down the Mulsanne, the Supra (again) goes from 2 small headlamps way back there to nosing my MINI's rear with trepidation!

We go thru the same cat & mouse routine. Meanhile, I also see that the Honda Civic is still a force to be reckoned, as I estimate it's about 15 seconds behind at this point (I counted).

Lap 6/7: I see my front tires are going deep orange, so I try to do the smart thing and take a pit. So does the leading Supra. It's been awhile since I've made a pitstop here at Sarthe, so I forget how exactly to enter and wind up SIDESWIPING the Supra and getting a FPE. Great.

Lap 7: I now see the Civic back there, and it's on FIRE. I can see why it was so successful early on, it's simply boogying thru the Dunlop Curve & following esses.

At the Mulsanne kink the Civic is now just -.685 seconds behind. I let him pass just to keep things simple (plus it'll give me a draft-shield). My front tires are starting to go salmon-colored now, which is making me pretty nervous.

I manage to stay right behind the Civic (drafting & braking) despite the disintegrating front tires, until Porsche curves when it simply starts boogying again.

Lap 7/8: Let's try this again! On my 2nd try into the pits, I realize IT WAS THE SUPRA'S FAULT! He slowed way down. There's no reason to slow this far down, it's possible to do this area cleanly (just like the rest of the track) but not have to slow so massively. Therefore I wasn't purely at fault when I hit him!?! He coulda moved-in a little faster.

I'm just ranting, don't mind me.

Anyways, I change only the front tires (SH again) and take no fuel...the 3rd place Supra now passes. Best lap of mine so far is 5:18.111

I'm REALLY MAD now about the FPE thing, but determined not to start over. I could be having a pretty exciting race against taht Supra RIGHT NOW, you see. :banghead: Grrrr....instead I'm a distant 3rd place. Wondering when (or if) the Supra will pit again, but I know at least the Civic is due in a couple laps.

Lap 8/9: The Civic goes for his pit a lap early for some reason. Still, he had a 36 second lead on me, so by the time he's leaving the pits, I'm merely a few car-lengths behind. The Supra now has a +26 second lead.

In the Dunlop Curve area, the Civic wipes out into the sand! As he clambers back on-track, I nearly sideswipe him by centimeters it seems, but at least I've got 2nd place back! :phew:

Down the longer straights, I try to keep the Civic at bay. Maybe it's ego, I just couldn't stand it getting ahead. SO whenever it caught up, I'd block it. I figure it would eventually pass me anyways cuz this can only last so long before a mistake is made. But then a funny thing happened: we're jsut entering the Porsche curves when I hear a SWIIIISSSSSSSSH. I look behind and saw this black thing flying in the air (I swear it looked like a tire). I got situated into the curve and then chanced another look. All I saw was a green cone flying into the air and the Civic SPINNING ROUND AND ROUND like a pinwheel! Oh, I laughed so hard.

Lap 10: 5:18.536 was my last lap (9). Well if anything, at least my lap times are damn-consistent. The Supra is [color=+26 seconds ahead[/color], but he's due in the pits by Lap 12 by my estimation, and I aim to come in a little early next time so I can equip some sticker front tires and hopefully clinch this thing!

By the end of the Mulsanne straight, I finally see the Civic behind me, but it's nothing. Just a shimmer. But i know this will change probably by next lap down the Mulsanne...

In the Porsche curves, the Civic now looks like a car instead of a shimmer, but it doesn't gain any ground thankfully. Neither does it shunt off-track, though. :(

Lap 11: Lap 10 was my best so far: a 5:16.313. Front tires still a solid green. What have I been doing wrong? lol. Could be the fact that by now there's 4 bars of fuel gone.

Lap 12: Fairly uneventful. The Civic & the MINI cat & moused a few times towards the end of Lap 11, but now on Lap 12 it hasn't caught me until the straight between Arnage and the Porsche curves, where it nosed me from behind (without my blocking it this time). Sometime during this point there was a message saying the Supra was now in the pits.

The Civic must have screwed up again because during the end of the Porsche curves, it was now waaaay behind. I decide to pit early for some sports-medium tires, but no fuel or rear tires, which are a light spring-pea green. This is my chance to make time on the leading Supra.

The Civic also pits behind me as the plot thickens...

Lap 13: As I drive thru the Dunlop esses and enter Mulsanne, I keep looking behind. The Civic must have screwed up again, for I see no trace of it. The Supra, unfortunately, is still gaining huge seconds with every split. :(

Laps 14-15: Those medium fronts seem to be doing the trick in keeping the Civic at bay. It simply didn't gain any more. Unfortuantely, I made a HUGE mistake and confused the L'Arche chicane with the other one. IN other words, I started spacing out during the first segment of the Mulsanne and thought I'd have to turn-in to the LEFT instead of to the RIGHT. Disaster.

The MINI wound up spinning into the sand now! As I clambered out (losing about 10 seconds) the Civic now caught up! :( There was the usual cat/mousing again.

But it didn't matter. It wound up wiping out again in Porsche curves.

the rest of the race was pretty predictable, since the Civic had to pit and I got a firm, unlosable 2nd place. 3 bars of fuel and yellow-going-orange front tires at the end.

Best overall lap of the race: 5:15.271

Wife watched me until the first pit and thought I'm crazy. Until I pointed out the fact that she will sit in front of the tv and crochet for a couple of hours.

She sounds like she'd get on very well with itgirlxx! That's her ideal evening too, glass of wine, something streaming on Netflix, a few balls of yarn and a crochet hook or the odd-knitting needle or 4!!

I'll have to show her your post when she gets in from work!
I've got to work on my race tomorrow...

Yea I gotta do my GS race tomorrow. Going to another party tonite. My ST performance from yesterday was pretty pathetic; partially my fault because I kept pausing the race to update that write-up,which surely screwed up my concentration. But I'm not doing it over. Too busy with other stuff now.

Greetings fellow racers!

Thanks for the great write-up Parnelli Bone:tup:, I thoroughly enjoyed your Mini's battle with the Honda Civic! Quite an interesting race for a track that is notorious for snooze fests!

After reading about your race, I decided to take my Chevy Camaro SS out for a spin.

Race 1: I try my luck against diff. level 6. On lap 1, the Mits HSR Concept spins out just before the Dunlop bridge and ends up facing the wrong way on the track. I plow straight into the HSR, race over!:ouch:

Race 2: Same diff. level, the Mits HSR makes it thru the esses and under the Dunlop bridge, so the race is on. I'm pushing hard to catch the pack at the first chicane (L'Arche)...I brake too late going into the chicane and spin out after getting a tire caught in the sand!:yuck: Abandon race.

Race 3: I lower the diff. level to # 5, and get off to a decent start. On lap 3, pushing hard to catch a draft, I drive a little wide going thru the sweeping right-hander just before Indianapolis and catch some sand. I try to save my Camaro, but the sand is too deep and a spin ensues and I end up facing the wrong way on the track. Race abandoned!

Race 4: I lower the diff. level to # 4, and get off to a decent start. After 5 laps, I decide its time to pit. I'm following the 2nd place car into the pits (but not that closely) and the 2nd place car just stops in the pit lane entrance. I smack its rear bumper quite hard,:dunce: and get a DTP. Race control takes over my Camaro, and I get a nice leisurely drive down the pit lane. I'm not allowed to stop for tires, so... race over!

Race 5: Same diff. level, and I get another decent start. Again I enter the pits after 5 laps (from 3rd place), and just behind the 2nd place car again. I'm being very careful, and I driving at about 40mph down the pit lane entrance road. Again, the 2nd place car just about stops in the pit lane entrance, and I veer to the right to avoid any impact. I'm now along-side and need to make it thru the chicane in the pit lane so I'm braking and trying to ease along-side the other car. An infinitesimal amount of paint is exchanged, but the driver in the other car must be related to the track steward, since once again I get a DTP!

Race 6: I'm underway again, but take a break for some dinner.

See you after the race, if I ever get there!
Respectfully,
GTsail

You almost look French too!

PB: My ST performance from yesterday was pretty pathetic; partially my fault because I kept pausing the race to update that write-up,which surely screwed up my concentration.

This is a tough series to compare races. You are competitive on +4 and I finished 5th on +3. Even though my lap times are very similar to yours. My fastest one was 5'14.xxx. I too went with hards on the front to do a 2 stopper. It must be because I'm running at reduced HP setting from stock. It is my understanding that the AI field is chosen in relation to the car you are driving. We had that situation in the last GTPLMS in the GT1 class. Try as I might they were away from me by the straight. The only reason I was 5th was the Audi must have screwed up somewhere along the way. And I passed him when he pitted on my lap 5.

Haven't gone back to view the race what with all the other races and RL.

Yikes!

I would agree...I was totally expecting this race to be a borefest (in ST class anyways) but it turns out it happened to be competitive almost until the end. I"m still mad about the FPE I got though. I'm wondering now if that hadn't happened, would there have been a photo finish between me and the Supra?

I forgot to mention that during my ST race, there was a non-stop battle for 4th place between the Integra and Lancia! I only mention this because later when I watched the replay, it was cool because there was NEVER a dull moment back there, either. Even the Taurus SHO way back in last place was fun to watch (for comic relief!) as it couldn't manage a single lap without some minor or major calamity!

I'm going to write-up the GS race, too. :D But this time I'm going to wait until it's all over and write as I'm watching the replay...

GS race over. It wasn't as great as ST, though it did have it's moments. I'll write it up later.

Jumped into the Mini. Now I know why I had a lonely race. Your HP is stock and I'm at -16. Although I reset my race and came up with a more friendly lineup. Was able to keep up with them for the first lap. :ouch: But don't have the time to run this short race again. :dopey: Maybe next year. :)

Bet you race in it when the weather is cool as well. ;)

I had the line James Bond said as he was riding in the CV2 from "For Your Eyes Only" when I read the Qualifying results...

I'm afraid we're being outhorsepowered.
I'm thinking the more HP you have under the hood, the better the chance you might have of winning the race.:(

G'Day all !

Nice Racing, very toight :)

I will have the Grand Valley race details up soon ( stuck at work and a bit hard to get it done quickly ).

Later.

Relax, I'm sure we get figure it out until then. Nice racing guys. Maybe Sarthe wasn't the track to try and impress the missus. GVS is one of my favorites. I'll try to get a video of a lap I did on TT last week.

CAMikaze:I'm thinking the more HP you have under the hood, the better the chance you might have of winning the race.

I agree, but I think on this track drafting could /would be a bonus. And I got a race where I got None. 2 seconds my friend and you get the bonus wt. 👍 Now I make my move. :sly:

Cracking result GTsail290!!!! Over a minute ahead of my over-larded Nissan!

Looks like PB as 2nd place gets the girl that oldmodelt had on offer. Lucky bugger! 👍

Down to last race of the season, with under 10 points in it. Awesome!
Off to see Arcade Fire on Sunday of next week, so I'm only going to get 1 shot at Grand Valley. Fortunately, as an original circuit, I love this place so hopefully I'll be competetive!

*EDIT* Having looked at those times, my fastlap time (draft assisted) was only about 4s faster than my average of 4'52 - 4'53. If GTsail290's best lap with 2 stops (same as mine) was 4'56, there's no way he could've beaten PB & me. Can we check results for typos here? Not suggesting anything untoward here, but given fastlaps, pitstops and total times there's something a little amiss here... If it was a 4'46 then I'm willing to accept it as real...What's the story?

Oh yeah, another win! :D As you can see I'm so happy...

G'Day all.

GTSail's time as pm'd to me was -

1 : 22 ' 55 . 026 Total time
4 ' 46 . 418 Fastest lap

His win was therefore valid.
I made the mistake in transposing his and camikaze's fastest lap times.
My error, not his, and his final time is the important data anyhoo.

Results table updated.
Too tired to check for any more errors. If anyone spots any, pm me.

Once again well done everyone, good racing.

Yes good job to everyone, just one more left to go!

I'd like to thank my sponsors. Amoco Ultimate gasoline. As well as Pirelli tires under the Red Man Chewing Tobacco Mustang. The Hello Kitty MINI Cooper S has also been equipped with Continental ContiPro Contacts. I'd also like to thank my pit crews for the long hours waiting around waiting to work just 12 seconds at a time. couldn't have done it without you guys.

Uh, where is the next race? Is the interview over yet? Is this thing on? OH. I'm still on. :D

Finally! A track that my Chevy Camaro likes!

I'm under no illusion that it was my driving that earned me the top spot.

My best lap was a 4.46.418, and I was able to run some others in the 4.48 to 4.50 range. I will go back and check my replay and see what the other lap times were (at least during the first 45 minutes anyway, because that's all that my system records).

Like I previously mentioned above, I ran against diff. level 4, against the following cars:
Lotus Carlton '90
Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
Jaguar S-Type R '02
Plymouth SuperBird '70
Plymouth Cuda 440 Six Pack

I started out on soft tires and was able to reach the rear bumper of the 3rd place Jaguar on lap 1 after getting a nice draft from the SuperBird going down the first section of the Mulsanne straight before the 1st chicane.

For the next 5 laps I was able to mostly stay in the draft behind either the Jaguar or the Lotus Carlton (who were trading 2nd and 3rd place between themselves). I am able to reach 160mph while in the draft behind the Jaguar and the Lotus Carlton! Eventually, the Jaguar pulls away from the Lotus Carlton and I latch on to its back bumper and we both pull away from the Lotus Carlton.

Both the Jaguar and I enter the pits for tires at the end of lap 5. Since I don't add any fuel, I exit the pits in front of the Jaguar and am able to pull out a small lead over the Jaguar of about 3 seconds. We both have cold tires for the next lap, so while I'm a little slow, the Jaguar does not gain any ground. I was expecting that the Jaguar might catch me, so I could draft again, but this didn't happen. I maintain my small lead over the Jaguar for the next 5 laps, and pit at the end of lap 10 with about the same margin over the Jaguar (who also pits).

Up in first place is the Ford Mustang SVT Cobra, who is just too fast, and usually pulls away by another second each lap (I figure Parnelli Bone must be driving).

When I pit on lap 10, my tires are somewhat orange, so I know the softs won't get me to the end, so I put on mediums. I know from all my previously abandoned races mentioned above, that I can get 7 good laps from mediums, so that's what I decide to do.

For the next 7 laps I drive hard and try to maintain my slim lead over the Jaguar. I'm successful, and the Jaguar never catches me even though I'm on medium tires, so I stay in 2nd place with about a 3 to 5 second margin over the Jaguar.

The Jaguar pits on lap 15, and makes my life easy for the last two laps. I gain a little on the Mustang after it pits a second time on lap 12 (Its on a two-stopper, lap 6 & lap 12), but eventually it pulls away again.

At the finishing line, the Ford Mustang wins and has about a 19 second lead over me. The Jaguar is some 25-30 seconds behind me in 3rd, and the Lotus Carlton is further back in 4th. We have all lapped the Plymouth muscle cars during the race. They gave me a scare during one pass since I came very close to hitting one as it was re-entering the track after a excursion into the sand.

I will look at the replay tonite and see if there's any details that I missed.

I've looked at my replay, and my lap times are as follows:
Lap 1: 4.53.667
Lap 2: 4.48.848
Lap 3: 4.47.361
Lap 4: 4.46.418
Lap 5: 4.53.470
Lap 6: 5.17.503
Lap 7: 4.48.900
Lap 8: 4.47.881

My replay ends near the end of lap # 9, so the lap 9 time was not recorded. My best lap of the race is lap 4, and I'm constantly in the draft behind the Jaguar. I actually reach 167mph just before the L'Arche chicane! I lap both of the Plymouth muscle cars on lap 9, and its this pass of the Plymouth Cuda that scares:scared: me since I don't really see it until I'm flying right by with my near miss!

Respectfully,

...just realized if I hadn't had that FPE in ST, and then the spin at L'Arche, me and driftking might have had a much closer, photo finish.

The Mustang also had a near-major calamity during Lap 3, although I managed not to spin. Was cat & mousing a Skyline, approaching Indianapolis. :scared: I think by the point we actually got there, we were both side by side. This isn't gonna be pretty, I thought. :ouch:

So the Skyline did something to get me sideways, I'm not sure what. But that's all it was....I'm sliding sideways after braking, into the Indianapolis area. Luckily I managed some braking before the skid, and also managed to countersteer effectively so that the Mustang didn't totally lose it. That's one advantage of having a longer-wheelbase car at a track like this.

Was still kinda pissed though, as the Skyline of course got ahead of me.

At least you can point your finger at the other AI!

I also had an incident going into Indianapolis, however, it was entirely my fault.

On lap 5, I'm drafting closely behind the 2nd place Jaguar going down the long curving straight before Indianapolis. As we get to Indianapolis, the Jaguar pulls over to the right and slows considerably. I can tell that the Jaguar's tires are starting to go, since its been much easier to draft behind during this last lap of its 5-lap stint. So, its my guess that the Jaguar is just being extra careful, and slows early for the turn.

Since this was my third race attempt against this particular lineup, I know that the Jaguar will pit this lap and I wanted to beat him into the pits. So I pounce, and slide to the left, and take the inside of the turn.

I have made a nice clean pass, but have left my braking too late and over-shoot the turn.

I stand on the brakes with all four feet, and almost come to a complete stop with my right front tire up on the rumble strip (but thankfully not in the sand).

The Jaguar smoothly cuts behind me and motors away toward Arnage with a friendly wave.

I'm somewhat annoyed at myself, but not really steaming since I know that the Jaguar is going to essentially stop in the pit lane entrance and give me another chance to beat it into the pits (which it does, so I do!).

Enjoy the racing!

As Viperin would say. "What a bunch of Sheila's." Try doing this for a hour and a half. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwSQoiBCOZ0  Pick it up from :45 seconds on. I guess the gas station at 1:53.00 could count as a pit. Pretty exciting, huh.

Yea, I think that area has claimed many of us victims. I know I've had trouble there with Ai during other races.

I stand on the brakes with all four feet, and almost come to a complete stop with my right front tire up on the rumble strip (but thankfully not in the sand).

Hmmm, may have to check the rule book on this one.
I am pretty sure there is a limit on how many feet you can use when braking :lol:

"All Paw" drive is allowed under Rule 22 sub section C, however,
"....... must be declared in the entry form prior to each Race....."

A Stewards ruling is pending.

*snip*

A Stewards ruling is pending.

In my defense, my pit crew checked the rulebook, and they could find no "feet" limitation in regard to the dimensions of our race car. I nervously await the stewards decision.

As for canine assistance, while I have tried this during qualifying at some short tracks, it was not used at La Sarthe since I find that there is a significant aerodynamic disadvantage in having said canine's head hanging out the passenger side window down the Mulsanne straight!

Upon review the stewards have decided ........no penalty.

Quite correct, the lolling tongue alone, will knock 5km/hr off you top speed :) **
