Updated OP 4th Jan
Gran Turismo 5 suffers from a serious online bug which results in abnormally long lap times for those affected.
The bug manifests itself by way of the competitor’s vehicle having reduced grip, poor acceleration and poor braking. It is usually associated with a noticeable drop in frame rate or stuttering. I terms of measuring the impact for those affected by this bug race lap times can increase around 3 – 5 seconds per lap (
and in some cases by much more).
The exact cause of the bug is unknown. However there are several factors which can increase the risk of the bug rearing its ugly head;
-
Room Size
There’s no magic number but rooms of 12+ competitors seem to be a common factor.
Premium Cars
All premium (highly detailed) cars also seem to greatly increase the risk of the bug.
Race Only
Free run mode seems unaffected. Those suffering the bug will not be able to get close to matching their qualifying (free-run) times in the race.
Use of a FFB wheel
There seems to be a strong correlation between using a FFB wheel and suffering from the bug. I can personally confirm this to be the case as well as GTP members;

Replay data provides a window into the issue
It has been noted by GTP member jon- that by playing back replays of affected races there is a large difference between the game clock and the time on a manual stopwatch. It’s suggested that this time difference could be the amount of time ‘lost’ to this bug. Unaffected races only see about 0.1 seconds difference per lap.
Further to this GTP member Sail IC used a stop watch time the lap difference for competitors in a bug affected race. The original lobby had 15 drivers and initially the time difference was over 4 seconds. However as competitors dropped off (or rage quit) the time difference was reduced. By the time there were only 12 competitors left in the room the difference was only 0.1 seconds.

This bug is real
Just because you may have never noticed or suffered from it does not mean it doesn’t happen. It does happen, and to some people very often too. In many cases it basically makes online racing leagues null and void.
This is not a Spec 2.0 bug
This bug has been around well before Spec 2.0.
This is not an online vs. offline physics discussion.
Yes, they are different. No, offline lap times do not match online lap times. We know.
This thread is about the discussion of this specific bug.
Please do not post information as fact when you clearly have no clue.
This thread has enough crud in it already. Keep it clear, concise and on topic; preferably with data to back up your input.
