and what does this have to do with Gran Turismo 4? btw welcome to gtp

everything!

I cant read single topic that hasnt been bashed on... this stuff gotta stop, makes it very annoying to read anything about gt4.

look at the past 10 posts, every single one of em has some douchebag complaining about how its a repeat post. Well not everyone spends a million hours on this forum a day. I look at this forum at least once every day, and all this stuff is new to me, I wana see it, and ill probably wana see it again two days from now, and i'm probably not the only one, so theres nothing wrong with people reviving old topics. (unless its a car list we all know gt4 gona have lots of cars)

Plus its a forum! not a search engine. You cant expect everyone to search for questions or comments they wana make. They already have that and its much better than this, last time i checked it was called Google. Forums are for asking questions, expressing opinions, and general **** like that! You wana search? use a search engine, I wana read, and be entertained by lots of pretty gt4 pictures and laugh at people that say stupid stuff. I dont care if 10 people post the same "Oh my god, Kazunori bought a car made out of gold! " article. who cares? Its not the same replies that go into each one. Its not the same discussion that goes into each repeat post. Plus some of those posts get so insanely long! Im not gona spend my time clicking to page 30 to see the latest screenshot, ****, i expect a new post to see the latest stuff! Makes life easy that way, and gets me the info i wana see! :ouch: :scared: Yea i understand stuff gets out of hand sometimes, but thats what moderators are for.

:dopey: thanks for welcoming me btw (seems to be standard procedure lately)... but uhh... :odd: im not new here, i just dont post much.

Not every topic is bashed, people simply say use the search button if the thread has been posted before.

i talk to the owner of users keep saying use search button, but its useless, we cant stop people from saying use search button, u have to live with it on this forum

Hello, Skillracer. Nice to meet you.

Having been on GTPlanet for eight months now (anniversary on this past Tuesday), the main reason why people like talking about using the search is because we tend to take new topics with already-mentioned points to be as "I already freaking know that!" I mean, think about it. Three magazines cover an ALMS race, with two from America and one from England. But in the "underground," you know about the race from an independent magazine or from a website. So when mutiple people talk about something already mentioned, the best thread or the first thread is the one that everyone is referring to. In "My Message to New Members" topic, I think I mentioned that it's okay to get on these forums now to talk about GT4, since it is the talk of the town. And not everyone is going to honestly say they search before looking online. So are newcomers dumb because they post something they believe is new in already-discussed forums?

"Covering the world of repeat posts bashing?" Well, that's kind of how things go on GTP. I guess you can say that it's total disrespect to cover an already-mentioned topic by coming up with a new one. Perhaps, it's the best explanation I can give as to why this bashing transpires. I mean, I'm no detective. I'm a 21-year old from Houston, TX, USA that is devoted and respectful to GTPlanet. So if this post gets locked, I at least got my point across in a non-agressive, non-sarcastic point of view.

Take care of yourself, Skillracer, alright?

He's been here longer than most of us.

I'm one of the head search advocaters. Why? Because it's not a hard thing to do. To spend 5 minutes searching before you post a new topic is hardly challenging. Why it's an inherent part of people's nature when using the net? Sure this is a forum but it incorporates a search engine for a reason - to make information more easily and readily accessible. If that's not enough, we have people who go out of their way to make threads that collate the best of the forums, answering as many questions as possible. Whether intentional or not, ignoring these features and posting a new thread out of naivety is an insult to these people who dedicate their time to trying to make your life as easy as possible. Why should they bother if people are just going to ignore the fruit of their labour? Sure, no one asked them to make these things, they did so because they thought they could make a difference for the better, and if properly utilised, they do. Look at the other day, 3 different threads to the tune of "GT4 pics" in a matter of hours. That's pretty poor by anyone's standards.

Searching is an essential skill for the modern world - you can't get by without know how to do so. I'm not just talking about the Internet either - when was the last time you went to a library? Did you go around screaming that you can't find a certain book? Once you finally found the thing, did you then go around loudly telling everyone that you found it and everything's great now? No, you wouldn't, because you'd get kicked out. There's etiquette to be followed - why should that not transpose to the internet? Anonymity is not sufficient grounds to be a douche.

What's even stupider is the Search button here (which doesn't need to be made bigger) is neatly matched by Google. That's right - can't find the button here? Go to Google and search for your topic with "site:www.gtplanet.net" as part of the string. I got 162 hits for "Complaints" just then. We have infrastructure everywhere to make things simple and we're meant to just accept that people can't do it? That's stupid. People can if they try. It's simple.

What about the people who've already answered the questions raised by a new thread? Why should they have to go out of their way to reiterate their message in a multitude of places because someone was too lazy to seek out an answer? I can't count the number of times I've seen live4speed make the same post on certain topics, it's just staggering. People even go so far as to ask questions that have already been answered in the very thread they're posting in.That's what gets me - these people come here in search of answers, but it's like once they get here they just say "Sanctuary" and they're safe to be stupid once again. You've probably searched to get here, is it going to kill you to make that two extra clicks to perhaps find what you're questing for? I mean, if a question has already been answered, why wait around for people to answer it again? Why not just go read the answer from the first time? Why is that illogical to people?

All I ask is sensibility. If you think that's unreasonable then you're probably right, but it doesn't revoke my right to say "Use the search button" and then provide links to threads answering a given question. I at least try to make an effort of not just saying "Search n00b", I'll at least offer the results of searching to try and persuade people it really works.

This'll probably get closed pretty quick too given we're entering the Great GT4 Forum Cull (GGFC for short).

Its fair enough getting anoyed at people that dont use the search feature, but for example today, when I made the thread about the new view being considored- I had a quick search and I didnt see anything that already had this. It can be hard for people on slow conections like myself - Trying to check out every page that might have somthing in it. And as for those few stickies up the top, I read them and im sure for the majority of other n00bs,they do aswell. You dont really get "Bashed" , more like kindly asked. Most of the time 👍

people don't use the search function and they never will...and if you start threads dedicated to newbies wich say "use the search function" in red coloured 72 pixel letters even less will use the search function because nobody wants to read red coloured texts that are 72 pixels big.
who reads all these end-users-agrements whenever you install a program on your pc? who reads the readme?

just ignore it...

That's just a cop out because everyone thinks they understand it anyway, or that it won't have an impact on them. You think that excuses you from piracy? You think ignorance justifies drink driving?

Supra: You're just lucky I didn't get a chance to flame you for your thread, GTXLR even prepped me! Seriously I wouldn't have flamed you for that one, especially if you went off searching for the topic before you posted which is all I ask. Unfortunately for you it was hiding in plain sight on the main forum page about 15 down but hey, it happens.

You're from NZ, explains the connection problems, they're a limiting factor I often overlook.

we are talking about a search function here, not piracy or drunk driving...

He was refering to ignorance with examples. I can't see how that ^^ comment aided this thread in any way, kinda ironic in many senses.

To say again what I've said more times than I care to count:
"Give a man a fish, and he eats today. Teach a man to fish and he can feed himself forever".

At the risk of sounding like one of the "old guy" flamers: We ask that you use the search button for several reasons.
If I've already made a thread on say, the "Tranny trick" I will usually go back to my own thread or the thread I was in with the best information.
Or better yet, if I'm looking for optimum setting for the Vitz, I know that Famine's settings are the dog's bollocks. And as I'm not so well versed in VB, (I still need one of my sons if I intend to post a pic, and I've been here more than two years) I'll send you to find Famine's settings.
That will give you two major key words to plug in to your search and ease your way.
I won't give you the whole dubdub.showthread--stuff because I can't be bothered to type all that out. But if I know where the info is I'll give you keywords.
Yes, I realize that a lot of folks will tell you just to search. But quite a few of us will give you the key words, or even the link to what you're after.
If that ain't enough for you, I'm sorry. But as I tend to be rather specific in my explanations, I'm not typing all that crap out again (and again, and again, and again)
So while you're crying me a river, could you also build me a bridge, and get over it.

All I was trying to get across there was that even though people don't do these things, they should, and just because most people don't do them is no excuse.

Very well said, Eagle.

It is quite galling to have people come on and post a common question with an easily found answer, without making any attempt to help themselves. Although I doubt they realize it, they are saying: My time is more important than yours; I can't be bothered to look for this myself, you give it to me, NOW! It's very presumptuous and it demonstrates laziness. If you're too lazy to help yourself, you're probably too lazy to help others as well, and so there is not much reason for existing users to work very hard to accommodate you.

SkillRacer raises the point of different discussions occurring in different threads. That's a very strong argument for keeping things together rather than letting them be scattered. No one has time to chase down three different discussions across three different copies of the same topic. Plus, there are points of discussion that might interact and bring up even more new ideas, but they can't because they are in separate threads.

The GT4 forum is currently an active topic behind the scenes, and we are working to improve it: both in reducing flaming and duplicate posts. The mods will be more active in here in general. It's a good board that is suffering growing pains and trying to absorb a lot of users who are new to both GTPlanet and message boards in general.

But the answer is not to simply let it go. Online communities go downhill extremely quickly without some real efficiency and self-discipline.

I think everyone needs to become more considerate of others before posting useless threads, but the same goes for people who decide to go around bashing less knowledgeable users instead of trying to help them.

Meh. I need to actually *think* before I post. Kind of like arguing with my mom.

ive been around this forum before gt2. the tendency here is a hiatus between games because there usually nothing new in certain periods of time. every time someone new appears, he have the same questions and just want some answer. the threads are gona be always the same, because gt is not an infinite concept. if you are not interested in a thread just dont participate, but stop bugging people. just let people write what they feel if the thread is a repetition but you are interested then participate.

I advocate someone shutting down a stupid question, however they want to.... "stupid noob", "search dummy", "look here"...etc.

What is annoying is all the morons piling on.... "oh geesh", "another wasted thread", blah blah.

Let ONE person shut down a bad thread. MOVE ON and stop creating a 10 page thread about how dumb a certain question seems. This is a "forum", anyone can join, anyone can ask a question. What exactly do you expect from a forum dedicated to a video game????

linoleum, your totally right. A new member who posted a repeat thread shouldn't be called a " stupid n00b". Not everybody at GTPlanet does that, most members point you to the search button. Then after that for some reason somebody comes in and butts there self in and starts a flame war. :banghead: So it's not really everyone's fault.

I just want to pull it away form the angle you guys are looking at it right now.
Anothe problem with repeat threads is that it adds to the server. Some of you may know that after GTP6 Jordan mentioned how buig the site was. And it is indeed a huge site. And what we don't need is to double up on info we already know and waste memory and possibly bandwidth.

I'm not sure how much bandwidth a thread uses, but the posts inside it use more obviously.

*Applause* Thank you very much. This is one of my biggest pet peeves – When a dozen of you guys start going "Close this! Where are the mods?! Close this!!". For corn's sake, people – Just because you're yelling in here doesn't mean I can hear you from the Rumble Strip! Get that in your heads, because it's been annoying me beyond belief, and I don't get miffed that easily.

So, what do you do when you see a new thread that has a subject that's obviously been covered before? ONE of you goes in, politely explains how to use the Search function and to look at the "Read This" threads, then [that same person] clicks on the
report.gif
button, which will send out an email to all the moderators, so that one of us can close the thread if necessary. That's it. We don't need 10 knuckleheads yelling to close the thread, we don't need 10 people telling the thread starter to use the Search function, and we don't need 10 reports sent out about the exact same thread. Just one person, and do it politely, please.

[/rant]

Gee, that's all we had to do? Why didn't you tell us? I missed that memo.

And when that person does report it, just make a little note in your post saying "I've requested this be closed."

[edit] I mean in your post in the thread, so others will know it's already been reported.

neon_duke, but is it alright to request a thread be closed even if we haven't created it?

If it's truly a duplicate of something already posted, yes. No guarantee it will be closed, but at least it will be reviewed.

i think the reason a lot of the people who are more established in terms of posting get upset with senseless threads and "this one time at band camp" or "i want this and that and this and that" style posts is that there are some very nicely laid out stickies that cover most of this info. No you can't be expected to read every thread, but as a newcomer to GTP you should at least read the stickied threads they will answer or provide a place to pose the question 9 times out of 10.

And saying the Search button is too small or this can't be found is ludicrous... there all at the top of the forum page... so that's just laziness and not a valid excuse.

I for one haven't even started a thread yet, b/c everything that i've wanted to talk about thus far has a thread already existing, so i post in the appropriate thread. If there comes a time for a new topic to be discussed that doesn't exist, then a new thread should get started.

Neon, thanks for the tip, will do from now on... even though the odd sarcastic jab at a useless post is more fun ;)

So , if a thread have been done before and it's useless I can report it so one of the moderators can close it?
