Apple started strong as well.

Would the 'resignation' of HP's CEO Carly Fiorina have had such a profound effect? Or was it a sum of a bunch of other stuff as well?

Yeah I knew Fiorina caused HPs stock to nearly skyrocket.

So Cisco had that much of an effect on near all the tech market? Interesting.

... and here's why:

Cisco has a market capitalization of over $117 billion USD -- the largest in the industry (communications equipment).

Ah, yeah I can see it having that much of an effect now.

Haha .. they were just talking about it on Closing Bell

Would it have a prolonged effect? Or just a temporary one?

Yeah .. just about everyone did. Blame Cisco (for once its not Canada, ).

Temporary. :)

Tomorrow should be interesting, though, as they will be announcing:

1. The trade deficit (MrktMkr's prediction = $-57 billion)
2. Unemployment claims (MrktMkr's prediction = 328k)
3. Treasury budget

These 3 things will be a factor in tomorrow's prices. How significant a factor, I can't say -- but definitely will be a factor.

If I only knew about that in 1990... :( 1000$ then -> 1 000 000$ in 2000. now that's what I call a return on investment. :P

....i just came to a crushing conclusion.

the only way i can participate in this is to not go to school. i just got home and the ****ing market already closed. thanks to that, i just lost a crapload of money that i planned on selling halfway through the day. it was nice and high, and now it's at -3% and i went from 168% return to a -4%

this is so not fair. all i need is an hour more. why cant the market close at 5?

What do you guys think about defense and aerospace type stocks?

It depends on whether or not Bush's $2.57 trillion budget goes through without major changes (in which case certain defense/aerospance stocks will benefit).

Usually, I don't like to "generalize" stocks by saying this industry is hot, or that sector is doing poorly. I tend to look more at individual stocks rather than industries/sectors as a whole.

DISCLAIMER: These are not "buy" recommendations. It is the belief of the author (MrktMkr1986) that these stocks merit further research!

Stocks you may want to do more research on:

*Armor Holdings Inc.
*Ceradyne Inc.
*Flir System Inc.

You don't need to quit school -- that's what "limit" orders are for.

Very interesting .. too bad I couldn't buy that stock in the first place for a few reasons.

1. I didn't know about it.
2. It started out at $2.50 then spiked in a few days or so.

can you explain limit orders?

and no, im not gonna quit school.....just do really crappy in the comp.

OMFG. http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=MCHXP 9,940%! WTF? Brian! Explanation, please!

 It's a mistake. They got the decimal place wrong where it says previous close. It should read: $250, not $2.50! It appears to be an IPO, but I haven't found any info on any other website... very strange. But the opening price was $250, not $2.50... the "day's range" confirms this.

That was pretty funny, though!

can you explain limit orders?

A limit order is an order to buy or sell a stock at a specific price, or better. For instance, you could tell a broker "Buy me 100 shares of XYZ Corp at $8 or less'' or to ``sell 100 shares of XYZ at $10 or greater.'' You specify a price and the order can be executed only if the market reaches or betters that price. Basically it's a conditional trading order designed to avoid the dangers of adverse unexpected price changes. The bad thing about limit orders is that in some cases, the order will not execute at all. So if you ask to sell XYZ at $10, and for the next 10 years the price of the stock remains between $5-8, it won't automatically sell -- you'd have to cancel the limit order and then sell it manually (market order).

Now, on VSE, here's how you set a limit order:

*Go to the "Trading" tab on the website
*Select the GTPlanet portfolio (in you are not already in it)
*You have option of either executing a Buy/Sell Limit order.
*Under the "Price" section you'll see:market open, market close, limit, and stop.
*Click on the "Limit" radio button and enter the price you want it set at.

EXAMPLE:

Buy AMGN 200 Limit: 61.50
Sell DCN 200 Limit: 19.10

*I'll be back in about an hour -- I have to go pick up my sister...*

Hey, I was wondering a few things...

How does one go about finding what the true ranking is? And, what's wrong with the on site ranking they have? :)

Btw, many thanks for introducing all of this, it's pretty fun. Also a good way to pass time.

Hey Brian,

My dad wants me to look into stocks in the Nanotech industry and I just wanted to know what some key things to look for should be in judging long term value. Suggestions?

Take $3,000 (the amount of money you started with), and add/subtract your total gain/loss. Then add interest earned.

EXAMPLE:

Symbol|Quantity|Curr Price|Curr Value|Gain/Loss|% Chg|% Equity ebay|70|78.99|5529.30|-74.90|-1.21%|187.77%
msft|200|30|6000|100|x%|x%
interest earned: 0.87

In this example, you have $3,000 - $74.90 + $100 + $0.87 = $3,025.97

NOTE: This only works if you still have the same stocks that you started out with. If you sold shares, and bought new stocks at a gain or loss, the figure will be inaccurate. This example assumes you have not sold (at a gain/loss) any stocks yet.
