I was going to welcome him, but after I added his name to the list, I got distracted and didn't get around to it. :sly:

To Lamp: Good luck! Thanks for joining! :)

Excellent! :)

The Dow hit a record high (3 1/2 year high, not all time high) a few days ago. That's what caused the surge in stocks. 👍

Gas hit a record high in our state yesterday, $2.299 a gallon. They are going to remove the law in our state that says the gas station owner has to mark-up the price of a gallon of gasoline at least 6% from the price he purchased it at. It doesn't make it any better that we have the highest gas tax in the country. We pay like 89 cents a gallon for tax.

That's very high.

They should do that. It's not fair to the consumer.

It doesn't make it any better that we have the highest gas tax in the country. We pay like 89 cents a gallon for tax.

MrktMkr Prediction:

Things that could affect stock prices on Monday:

If the PPI (producer price index) increases higher than expected, it could have a negative impact on the market.

dictionary
ppi - An index that measures inflation in wholesale goods. The producer price index, or PPI, tracks the prices of food, metals, lumber oil and gas, as well as many other commodities, but does not measure the price of services.

An increase in the PPI tends to lead to inflation. If that happens, the Fed will definitely increase interest rates 1/4% point to 2.75 on Tueday. If that happens, the stock market will be negatively impacted. :ill:

Things that could affect stock prices this week:

All of the above plus...

  1. The consumer price index
  2. Whether or not the Fed maintains, or increases interest rates
  3. Oracle's latest earnings report
  4. General Mills' and ConAgra's earnings report
  5. FOMC's (Federal Open Market Committee) policy

Is the market cooling off? Or are investors nervous about tomorrow's Fed policy changes, possible interest rate increases and inflation?

PS
the stockmarket sucks now. Sony has practically crashed.

The stock market sucks because people are scared. If people are afraid, they tend to sell. Some stocks are still outperforming the market so the idea is to know where to look.

The Fed raised interest rates 0.25% to 2.75%. What will end up happening is banks will raise their interest rates accordingly.

The good news:

  • Greater interest rates in savings accounts/CDs/money market etc.
  • Inflation should slow down

The bad:

  • Interest rates for car loans/mortgages etc. will rise making it harder to take out loans
  • The stock market will not grow as fast as it did before because people will be more inclined to save than invest
  • Consumer spending will slow down, and will result in lower revenues for corporations -- that will in turn hurt stock values

So is raising the prime interest rate a good thing or bad thing?

I find it hilarious that even thought I barely pay attention to this, my limited amount of Sony stock is still keeping me afloat, even doing good.

That's good to hear. Just be aware, though, that with the increase in interest rates and fears of inflation, stock prices may be adversely affected -- but there are no guarantees.

I won't say much about this because I am sure those of you in America have heard about it, but part of BP's largest refinery blew up earlier this week. I believe it was Wednesday. It refined 3% of the fuel in NA. The premium fuel line blew up. BP says that it will be easy to replace. They just need to order another one from its suppliers.

So did I. It must be a Wisconsin thing, because I think my cousin did a virtual stock exchange then as well. I did mine for Gifted and Talented, it wasn't part of the everyday classroom.

Looks like Hershey's finally reached its peak...

As long as you have your stop loss in place, it shouldn't be too bad. If you didn't buy it yet, I'd monitor it for a little bit, paying SPECIFIC attention to the amount of shares being shorted and the number of put options that are being traded. These factors as well as EPS Trends should give you an idea as to whether the price drop is short-term, or long-term.

What made you come to the conclusion that you should not buy anything?

anyway, what happened to all the hussle-bussle that this topic once was?

It's natural for people to lose interest in the stock market after a while. Especially after GT4 coming out, the thread has had a significant "cooling off". I'm sure by the time the summer roles around and people have a bit more time (NO SCHOOL!) the thread will pick up a bit. I predict the most traffic though, will take place when the competition draws to a close. Almost everyone will be scrambling to get the highest score -- especially if there's a prize involved. :sly:

In other news, I haven't been able to update the thread in a while because I've been concentrating on my real stocks. Also, I'll be monitoring a 401k as well... so I may not have as much time to do MrktMkr tips and MrktMkr predictions like I used to. :indiff: I'll do things like that when I have the time.

I do, however, strongly suggest that you follow the tips when you look for stocks to buy in both real life and the simulation.

Sony (NYSE:SNE) was ordered to pay $90.7 million USD in for a possible patent infringement with Immersion Corp. (NasdaqNM:IMMR). Sony's stock price hasn't really taken a hit, but IMMR was last up about 12% as of this writing because they won the case. No, this is not a buy recommendation. The price has been dropping since opening bell because people are trying to take advantage of the sudden price increase.

Sony's stock price seems to be unaffected.
