These two ideals can never co-exist peacefully when you think about it.

When you set your mind onto "filling up", you'll start grabbing just about anything you see and eventually realize you probably shouldn't have picked up some of those cars the day you learn about some other future model you really really must have. Plus, what's the rush? ;)

But that's my two cents on the matter, since I am now even selling off a bunch of 1/64s after learning this through the years. Do what you need to do. I just wanted to share a thought.

Very true, but so far i have not had a buyers remorse, just yet :scared:
 
I'm sure you're all getting sick of seeing just 911s, but I got 3 new 911 Turbos. In funky colors.

The red Turbo was described as "new" by the seller, but it arrived dusty, like it had been on display and the wheels have multiple paint chips. No big I can paint, but I am genuinely upset about the bubbling paint on the hood of the car. The seller failed to mention that part and stupid me failed to notice it until I removed the tape from the doors and hood. So, I paid new model price for a used model and cant return it. Dang.

Used or new...the bubbles will pop up anyway, it's like genetics :scared:

Probably right, but I'm not sure I would have paid the price I paid knowing there were bubbles in the first place. The seller was nice enough to offer a refund. I've already replaced the car with a GT Spirit 993 Turbo in silver. :cool:

Though, I really liked the Arena Red color. :(

Not really... so long as they look nice like that purple one, we won't have any issues here. :p

I bought a UT 993 with a warped tie rod. Seller had opened it up to take photos for listing. Dust could've collected at the time , and the warping is most likely a defect. Can't say that's enough to make it a "used" product.

And yeah, paint rash happens to diecasts, not always caused by the previous owner alone. Grab some microfinish sandpaper also with polishing compound to remove it.

My collection is focused on 911s, I figure if I am going to spend this kind of money collecting it may as well be my favorite cars first. I have a bunch of them, one of these days I will get out the DSLR and take some proper pictures!

My UT 993 Carrera RS has a warped tie rod, the front wheels face out in opposite directions when the car is sitting. I noticed it recently. Even the red Turbo had the same issue, but it looks like the UT Turbo S is fine for now. I suppose calling it used was a stretch, but it was described as new and lacked any further details, I made the assumption that it would arrive in better shape, but I guess that is my fault for not asking questions. The dust was heavy on the rear of the model under the car's wing. To me that implied it was sitting out for a while, the seller cleaned the model but missed that part, but I can't prove that. I didn't want to risk further damage trying to fix the bubbles, luckily the seller gave a refund. I'm not seeking perfect models, but at the price I paid for the Turbo, it could be better.
 
As far as I've tested/read/researched, paint rash is caused by the process of drying paint over time, it's not caused by humidity, it's a production factor,
it's like baldness, you'll loss you hair eventually because you're born this way...
I have a BBurago and a Hot Wheels 1:18, same conditions, same light exposure, played by the same kid (me, lol).
The BBurago has no paint rash AT ALL, while the Hot Wheels does.
Another example, on my Alfa Romeo 1:43 collection there are some atrocious model with paint rash, zinc cancer and others look brand new, all of my models were kept safe in the plastic box, away of any kind of light exposure, same treatment.
Most exoto owners have them in the best condition possible, since the model is extremely valuable, but paint rash seems inevitable.
 
It's unfortunate. I've never seen it on other models before this UT Turbo. I really hope the models I currently have do no suffer the same defect over time.
 
Tis why one of the reasons I'm put most of my moolah on resin.

That's actually an excuse. the real reason why is because I'm not blown away by opening parts (with the exception to highly detailed engines of course).

I've been more into resin lately, especially with GT Spirit models. Quality is great and I've never really cared about opening parts either. It's a big plus that they aren't affected by paint rash.

Been doing some more research into this paint rash stuff, looks like it's caused by unclean surface or bad primer application prior to paint or something like that. But it seems to be completely random and can affect any brand. Luckily none of my models currently have the issue, but I am a little depressed thinking that they possibly can in the future.

This is more of a personal theory than an actual fact and it may be wrong.
The paint rash should pop up just in some "designated" parts of the car (I dunno why in some yes and in some not).
So, once you've experienced the rash, the model will stay in this conditions, no more, no less.
(this means that if I'm correct, apart from the already rashed paint, our collections are safe by now on)
Confirmed on yours since the car has bubbles just in that part of the hood, while the rest is fine!

Resin is (and now I can finally say: personally) better than die cast, but since I prefer tampo painting over decals and opening parts...I prefer die cast if the same car has been made in die cast and resin...
 
Tis true, I forget resin doesn't do tampos. Better keep the models in a condition where the decals don't dry out.. or at least aren't likely to be handled should it go brittle.

Paint rash from what I read isn't the paint, but rather imperfections in the metal, hence the name 'zinc cancer'. These imperfections over time will pop up pushing up on the paint. Over time it will stop and settle.

I've got Spark, GT Spirit and Ignition. For diecast, I have Autoart, Minichamps, GMP and UT.

I imagine it's just a perceived bias I have towards my particular resin models wowwing me more than diecasts, but because of this, I think I can live with collecting resins only. I will have to make an exception for CMC and Exoto. I definitely want to see high level craftmanship up close.

Paint rash and zinc cancer are two different things. Paint rash, like SPhilli911 said, is caused by improper prepping before painting, which causes the paint to have small bumps or bubbles. Zinc cancer is actually improperly alloyed metal, which causes iirc intergranular corrosion, which eats away at the metal from the inside. Paint rash is generally fixable if it isn't too bad, while zinc cancer is unstoppable.
I have mostly been getting resins lately only because diecast makers either won't make the cars or do a crappy job at making the cars I want.

I knew something was bugging me about these wheels the day I learned of Ignitions.

It's the length of the spokes. It's too long/narrow, offsetting my ideal proportions of BBS wheels. Not to say it's wrong or anything; it is just personal taste.

I like BBS wheels that are closer to this:

Gap between the spokes is wider and the shape overall is rounder (or curvier).

Yeah, the ones on the FC3S appear to be a different model of BBS wheels. There are like a billion different variations of the BBS LM wheels after all :lol:

Too much for my current budget, I dunno how the heck I've never got one, seems like when I was a child I was addicted to the F50...there's still the Hot Wheels elite F40 competizione but I want the Lego too :lol::lol:
 
Unfortunately the only F40 Competizione in 1/18 right now is the old Hot Wheels Elite one, which is kinda poop compared to the Kyosho F40. Kyosho did make an F40 with the LM wing though, but still had the standard popup headlights. LookSmart will be making a 1/18 resin F40 LM in the future, for around $200 usd.
