No to both. This is rarer although they made quite a few of them starting in 1981. Shares a distinctive feature with one of the greatest supercars of the modern era. :sly:
 
Nope. This used a 1.6 Beetle engine - which, along with the production date, might give a clue to its origins.
 
No. It's a bit more 'Rio!' than 'Ikea'. ;) Oh and the supercar connection was the McLaren F1.
 
No, but we're getting closer. This company was independent but used VW parts which it tended to re-engineer for it's own purposes, sometimes improving them. Went out of business in 1994 due to a lack of government funding.

No. Not Japanese. 'Rio' as in Brazil and 'McLaren F1' as in 3 seats.

Grr! I thought the latter might be the clue and was googling all kinds of things like "3 seater car" and "central driving position", but no luck! You can even kinda tell in the blurred pic that the driver is central...oh well!
