It is a Grumman, it is also one of Grummans more popular models. I beleive it started production in 1975 and it was the final variant of the AA-5 line of civilian aircraft.

That should be enough clues to get it now.

Edit:

My final clue, just so I can go to bed

And I'm off to bed, if anyone gets this (which is allmost inevitable) post a new picture up, I will confirm it in the morning.

Hope I'm not repeating. I didn't read through all 185 posts.

What is it?

The clue:
This aircraft had a visible feature which was a first for the U.S. Army.

Aah, finally, an easy one. :D

Grumman FF-1 'Fifi'.

Oh, the distinguishing feature I believe was the retractable landing gear.

Not quite that easy jammy! Sorry. You are correct about the landing gear. Fifi was the first fighter to have the retractable gear. This is not a fighter but a trainer. Also the FF-1 was a bi-wing with an enclosed cockpit. This aircraft pre-dates the FF-1 by about 13 or 14 years, the end of WWI.

Think Ohio for the manufacturer. ;)

Darn.. The landing gear is classic prop driven Grumman.

Could it be a Vought or Ryan?

Wait.. Orville and Wilbur were from Dayton Ohio..

Is it a wright or Waco?

The shape of the rudder/fin is a clue, but I can't quite dredge it up from memory.

It does.. It's really squatty, and it's got a 4 bladed propeller. I think it would be perfect for looney toons or something.

High-Test

Close enough High-Test. 👍 You have both dayton and wright in your post which is what it is. A Dayton-Wright XPS-1. The first U.S. Army plane to have a retractable landing gear. (and yeah it is a classic toon plane isn't it?)

You're up H-T.

The designation is Vought TBU but I don't remember the name. It never entered production (it was to be produced by Consolidated-Vultee as the TBY) but was damn good. Do you give me half a point?

- EDIT - I just remembered it, it was the Sea Wolf.
