Cutsouts are just 2 mini y pipes that split off the main pipes after the manifolds, allowing you to run your full exhaust when you want or open headers when you're feeling agressive. Both at a flip of a switch.

People use them for drag racing all the time because they flow better than a full system while allowing them to run on the street as well.

Isn't this called a Exhaust or Muffler Bypass? Apparently a lot of high end cars have them because they can pass sound testing but after that you can switch it back.
 
Detector just saved me from getting a speeding ticket!

Have to say I was pretty skeptical of radar detectors at first, everyone said they were a waste of money and only alert you when it's too late. Took a leap of faith about a week ago and purchased one. Well just today as I was coming home from school going down down a hill that slowly curls right. Speed limit was 35 and I was going at least 45 (pretty steep hill). On the right side of the street were a bunch of little shops with individual entrances mostly covered up by bushes. As I was coming up on the stoplight at the bottom of the hill my detector alerted me to a K band signal and got stronger and stronger as I approached the stoplight. I instantly slowed down to 35 and sure enough right before the light there he was, a charger nicely hidden behind a bush just waiting to pounce on unsuspecting motorists. Pretty sure he heard me too, I had my tops off and my detector was going crazy :lol:

2 more saves and my detector will have paid for itself :D
 
Im way late to this but why not switch to an iron block lq4/9. Bigger selection of heads for the bigger bore and you can build it while you daily your car then swap it when your done and sell the ls1 which is always worth a couple grand.

Weight. I plan on autox-ing this and last thing I need is an additional 80+lbs on what is already a nose heavy car.

LQ's are good for big power and if I were to go into drag racing it would totally make sense, but right now I need to make as much useable power as light as possible.

Okay just wondering, afr's are really the only way to go then for a max effort ls1 build then imo.

You just have to make sure you're not buying high dollar parts that won't work together. Can't tell you how many AFR headed, over cammed, mis-matched intake'd engines I've seen.

They have a lot of awesome motors, they just aren't my first choice. I don't believe the LS1 is the be all, end all when it comes to small block V8's.
 
Finally bled my brakes, old 15 year old fluid was nasty.

Replaced it with the good stuff, to the tune of $20 per pint :lol:

I am actually a bit surprised you didn't change the fluid years ago since you autocross with this. I put in high temp synthetic Valvoline in my Camaro. The fluid has never cooked on the track. Never any brake fade either.

How is the clutch brake in process going? You hit the necessary miles yet?

I meant to but flushing fluid is a big pain on these cars because of the ABS block. I flushed it, then went out and engaged ABS a couple times to get the fluid out then re-bled. Not to mention I had to chase quite a few air bubbles out.

Clutch is almost good to go, have 430 miles down out of 500, will probably post a video of me doing some pulls when I hit 500 :D

I'd also agree with your $20 statement.
 
Quick tip on cutouts. Either buy the expensive high quality electric ones with a great reputation, or just buy the ones you have the physically unbolt yourself. El-cheapo electric cutouts tend to break... Like all the time. Stick it close-ish to the collectors and you'll gain some power. Your car will split your ears, but you'll gain some power.

Also got LED's for the license plate, glove box and dome light in the mail.

Still not sure if I'll get cutouts, but if I do they'll defiantly be electric.

Thing is I absolutely HATE rasp in the exhaust note and with cutouts you'll get lots of it. Duals are a lot more expensive but they sound godly when setup right, not to mention they flow as good if not better than cutouts...

Cutouts are definitely more power. Your exhaust doesn't have to go through mufflers and 10 feet of pipe. One way of doing this would be to keep the Y pipe, add a nice muffler so it sounds good and stays quiet for long journeys, then get cutouts for track use and panty-dropping.
 
Nice car, I think they cost around the same price as a newer GTO. Also, the Borla exhaust sounds amazing. Saw a YT video with the stock and aftermath sound with the WS6.
 
@Harry6784 you hate the Rasp noise...? I think that sounds really good. Well on import cars at least may sound weird on muscle cars. Lol

You could always straight pipe it... Haha Jk
 
Cutouts/open headers sound a hella lot better than going through 10 feet of pipe and mufflers...if you really think they are all that raspy then you must have never heard an LS1 with them before in person because they are quite the opposite.

Cutouts are going to give you the sound you're looking for. I would recommend Thrush welded glasspacks. Heard them on my buddies pickup today and they are awesome sounding. Deep and bassy and loud enough that you know it's idling without being ridiculous. No excess noise and raspyness.

You have to be careful about judging how an exhaust setup sounds on videos, especially loud ones (straight pipes/open headers). Half the time the volume just distorts the sound picked up by the microphone and makes it sound rubbish.

You need to hear something in person before you can judge it.
 
I agree, when I recorded my HKS Super Drager it just sounded like a raspy horrible I4 with a straight pipe

But in reality it has a deep aggressive rumble, so.. yeah don't base everything on videos - especially with how youtube compresses sound ontop of variable microphone quality.

I LOVE the sound of chambered exhaust. Love it. In fact I have been highly considering redoing the 40 series flowmaster mufflers on my 69 Camaro with chambered mufflers. Sounds even more aggressive and much more violent in older muscle cars because there are no cats and its a true dual exhaust from front to rear. Very tempted to do it this year. It also adds even more ground clearance. The ONLY negative is that it is VERY loud. My car is already fairly loud and chambered exhaust I fear would be too loud. Still might try it. Just need to find the best place to buy the mufflers.

I also agree it is very hard to capture the true sound of mufflers in a video. Especially from the outside of a car.
