i put up a hdmi cable for my hd tv, and it wont let the captions come out. Is there something i can reconfigure on the reciever to enable the captions or enhance the picture? Thanks!

Crayons.

edit: No, seriously. That's a weird question. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. 👍

I haven't a clue why the captions would be disabled, but there's no way to "enhance" the picture.. HDMI is delivering the original, unaltered digital video straight from the source.. it can't get any better than that.

By "receiver" do you mean external HD tuner?

A little bit of Googling gives mixed results. People with up-converting DVD players are having all kinds of fits, but a plain HD receiver should output the captions. I thought it was required by law. It may have to be enabled in the tuner instead of the TV, though.

OTOH if by "receiver" you mean you have an A/V receiver with HDMI switching, then what source are you using, and does captioning pass if you bypass the receiver and connect the source directly to the set?

More details on your setup will yield better answers.

I am not really understanding your question, and as others have suggested, we need to know more specifics. What kind of TV, player, and receiver do you have - as well as specifically how you have each connected to each other.

Also, when you refer to "captions", are you reffering to a DVD's subtitles, or are you referring to the receivers on-screen guide/info? If it is the later, many receivers will only send on-screen info via S-video or composite.

As for enhancing the picture, I assume you mean making video adjustments to the picture to properly calibrate it for optimal performance. You should be able to do this via the display's video settings menu. I'd recommend the use of video calibration DVDs like Digital Video Essential and/or AVIA.

My set up,

Comcast Cable HD reciever direct into a Sony Grand Wega.

Don't worry about the improving the picture, it's as good as i cant get it. I just want the captions from the TV to appear, but from what Digital Nirate has said, its only S-vid or composites that will send caption info.

I still think there is a bit of a language barrior regarding your question.

I was reffering to the on-screen info that most A/V receivers display via S-video/composite.

If you are talking about the closed captions/subtitles that many shows are broadcasted with, then yes, they should defintely work over HDMI as the information is part of the original signal. It sounds like either you have the closed captions setting turned off on either the TV and/or the HD Cable HD receiver. If you are unable to find these settings, you may have to refer to the manuals, or call Comcast tech support.

Also keep in mind, some programming does not offer closed captions.

I bet he has those ****ty Motorola boxes Comcast hands out. Turn off the box and then press and hold the MENU button on the remote. It will bring up the service menu. You can turn on CC, what type of CC, and make sure you set the right output resolution for your TV (1080i max).

I got a problem with my HDMI connection now, when i turned the TV on, and theres nothing but sound comming out, and no video. At first i turned it on it says, there is a compromise with the HD connection and put it back to the old YPbPR cables. SO i did, the video is just rubbish, i want to use the HDMI, any suggestions? I tried to get to the setup by turning off the receiver then pushing menu, and it works then the tv blacks out again. I tried to set up on a different video with the YPbPR cables, but no HDMI setup. I got close i saw HDMI and UVI ( i think), i switched it to hdmi without the tv showing a picture, and it went on to the menu then blacked out again, then i switched it to UVI, then it went on then blacked out again. Is it my tv? Do i need set up the TV for HDMI? I tried to check the manual, and nothing about HDMI setup.

EDIT: BTW I got the captions resolved.

The latest firmware killed the DVI port on the box. Use the component cables for now.

Make sure that all the inputs are matched up correctly and are firmly in place and that the connection is from the Comcast box to your receiver and then out to your tv or directly to your tv.

Ive done a triple check on the matching of the inputs. And its still a greenish tint. My mom says shell go to comcast and complain, but should i do with the HDMI cable. One more question, how does comcast update because my reciever is not connected to a phone line or internet connection.

Keep the HDMI cable and replace the Moto box. Comcast updates using the coaxial cable, just like Comcast's cable Internet service.
