To clear up something else, switching from 480-1080 will not hurt your set. It's a resolution switch nothing physical.. It's like changing channels.

Not true at all, there is far more going on than just a "resolution switch", its electrical and involves electrical components.

I haven't a clue what my TV is capable of but the only sockets i see are Composite and Scarts, bar the Coax. It's the 24" Toshiba 24Z33. Can I only use the standard picture mode with this?

There is a trick to getting your PS2 in progressive mode and it works like this;

Put a movie DVD in the PS2 (not a game)

when the movie starts playing hit start on the controler for the DVD control panel

Then hit stop twice.

Go to the tool box icon and scroll down to progressive scan mode, turn it on (defalt is off)

IMPORTANT: If you dont stop the movie completly (black screen) the option to turn on progressive will be greyed out.

If you find that you get a screwed up screen reboot the PS2 while holding down the start button. That will take it off progressive mode.

Hope that helps

Set your PS2 to Y-Pb-Pr and screen size to 16:9. Use a set of component cables between the PS2 and your TV's HD input (not a component-video only input). Select the correct option is GT4's menu, screen size 16:9 and 1080i.

My Mitsubishi WS-55411 has been ISF calibrated for 480i, 480p, and 1080i. 1080i clearly looks the best to me for GT4 even though it's being upscaled. My TV, as most HDTV's, exhibits the flicker but it will likely do no noticeable damage by the time the set itself dies. Any TV that exhibits this problem with GT4 will also do it with a cable or satellite signal when switching from HD to standard resolutions.

I urge everyone to take the 10 minutes to read the manuals of your gear so that you know the ins/outs of it. Most of the answers to your questions can be found there.

Ok, we have a Mitsubishi Widescreen that says HD1080i on it but my dad is telling me that to actually have HD tv you had to pay an extra $400 or something to get it. So, I dont know what the hell I am supposed to do now. The TV Manual is crap and makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

I dont know what the (I am trying not to cuss, it's been a hell of a day) ____ I am doing or what the tv is running off (480 etc wise). All I know is that the damn thing wont play GT4 in the input 3 screen like it did on my old PS2 (I bought the PStwo, slim one, today because the old ps2's laser is crap).

If anyone has some help I would greatly appreciated, I am too pissed off to think straight right now after thinking we had 1080i and that I could change a few settings in the PS2 and be all right. I don't get it, the TV says 1080i on it but you have to spend money for something to make it play in high def...Ugh. I am just going to try setting the PSTwo to 1080i mode to see if that will work.

Sorry for sounding like an idiot but the frustration level is WAY up there :ouch:

EDIT:
Ok, like I said earlier my OLD ps2 would work fine on the tv, but with the new PSTwo and GT4 I can hear background sounds every now and then but the screen stays blue or has lines going through the blue. Soo, is hte PSTwo not setup correctly or...?

I think your dad's refering to an HD tuner which is necessary to view over-the-air HD programming (when the TV doesn't have a built-in tuner, some stores call it "HD Ready"). But that only refers to HD broadcasts. The TV should be able to display a 1080i signal coming from the PS2.

I'm not sure how you have it connected right now, but you should be able to just use a component cable straight into the TV, and with the PS2 and the TV both set to use 1080i, it should work. Maybe right now you have the PS2 set to use 1080i but not the TV, or vice versa.

I have a Mitsubishi widescreen 1080i tv and GT4 works magic in !080i mode. Just make sure you have component cables and they are plugged into a high-def component socket. You can change to 1080i in the GT4 options menu. I think we might have the same TV, could you give me more details on what your problem is so I can help you more??

I ended up buying a 27 inch "advent" its going back tommorrow for a 27 Inch Samsung, the Advent provides a good picture, but when in 16:9 mode three rows of pigles go accross the screen "red, green, and blue" its very odd, Im excited to pick up the Samsung, it has a great picture

Ok, so if I set my PS2 to 1080i mode on the tv it works with, will it save and then when I turn it off and swap it over to the Mitsubishi will it still be on 1080i mode? I am just worried I will set it to 1080i mode, then the TV I am viewing it on won't read that setup. It says after 15 seconds it will go back to normal or something like that..

Basically I need to know if it will stay on 1080i mode because my HD tv WILL not show me any of GT4 the way it is set now.

Spawn,
Are you viewing it in Input 2 or Input 3, etc? I am REALLY pissed off because some stupid black car beats me in the last 5 seconds of the 2nd Grand Canyon Rally :grumpy: Twice in a row now, I am just gonna sell that Toyota Rally car and take my $250,00...Woo, CSL time baby!

Thanks all,
-John

Finally, after all this time! THANKS!!!
One more question, how do I remove the damned password protection? It asks me for my password everytime I start a movie... how do I remove that "feature?"

No! To use 480p or 1080i, you must use a component cable.

Unfortunatly you have to use componet to handle the signal. There are cheeper alternatives than monster cables and to tell you the truth I don't see much, if any diffrence in my cheepo sony componet cables and my $80 monsters on my Mitsobishi HDTV.

I have a Sony KV-40XBR800, 40" HD ready tv. I have my PS2 hooked up via
component cables to the correct input on my tv.. 1080i selected in the GT4 menu.. but when I play the game the picture looks as if there are tons of tiny lines throughout the picture.... definately doent look HD...

What settings do I use on the PS2 ... 4:3, Full, 16:9?

Does the PS2 have to be in progessive scan mode?

Thanks

Are there 3 or 5 plugs on the end including the audio. If 5 then those are correct, if 3, you got composite cables.

Anyone have an answer to my question?

If I set my PSTwo to 1080i would it stay on 1080i if I unplugged the system and moved it over to our HD tv? The HD wont even show the game, just the normal blue screen with the GT4 background music. So, if I switch my PS2 to 1080i on the normal tv, it wont show up. So, I will have to unplug it and transfer it to HD, which is why I need to know if it will save on 1080i.

What I dont want to do is transfer it over, find out it doesnt work for whatever reason on our HD and then have a PSTwo stuck on 1080i with no tv to change it back on..

Know what I am saying?

There's no need to worry, as the game does not save the HDTV settings anyway. Every time you reboot, the game will be set to the standard 480i again. Furthermore you will have 1080i only when racing, all the menus are in 480i. So even if your HDTV won't accept 1080i, you'll still be able to set it back to 480i then.

the Interceptor

My TV does not accept HD, is only 50Hz and doesn't do progressive scan. It does have dynamic scan control though, whatever that is, and will accept an RGB signal via scart. Is it worth me getting a component cable from my PS2 or would that not make the picture any better?

If you don't have a component input there's no point in getting a component cable. Your best option is to have a scart RGB cable, which gives a very good picture already.

Sorry, that is kind of what i meant, how much better is the picture than the yellow composite plug cable?
RGB is much better than composite, which equals the little yellow plug (don't confuse composite with component, there's a huge difference!). If you use an RGB cable, the picture will become clearer and sharper with much better color separation.

Once I started with the composite cable that came with the Playstation. Then I bought a S-Video cable, and now I use a RGB cable. Therefor I can say it definitely is the best of those three, being close to component. Usually standard TVs don't have component inputs though, so RGB is our best choice.

Ok, I have everything set up correctly, component cables, ps2 and gt4 menus, etc. but when i am playing the game it looks as if every other line is being displayed ... i have a newer slim ps2... is that the problem....

Okay thanks for that interceptor.... I'll have a look around...

Edit: OK, found the "Blaze ultimate RGB scart cable for Playstation 2", seems to have good reviews... I'll post back here in a few days if i get it to tell you how good it is...

here is a pic of my mess....damn I need to clean up

and I have mixed feelings on the 1080i

It appears that antialiasing on all geomatry edges has been shut off in this mode. I see lots of fluttering pixels. However I can see a lot more detail over all, and it makes it easier to see turns coming.

Still amazing to me that they can get the ps2 to do 1080i at all.
