Well, rubber timing belts are just a pain in the ass, any way you slice it. *Someone who's belt shredded some teeth a week ago* On any car that old, you have to make sure all your belts are in good condition, especially those timers.

The belts/pulleys are strung very tight, which is why I asked. The guide I am reading right now pretty much says that the charger is the only thing to be worried about. The white Corrado's charger was rebuilt by BBM at the same time as the motor, so I guess that would give me more time before having to tend to any problems or regular replacements that may occur in the future. The other thing it says is to watch out for how hot the engine gets, there are solutions for this, like different intakes and intercoolers but I don't know which one would be more effective. It looks like I have a whole lot of questions to ask.

I don't know much about the 2.0s reliability/maintainability-wise.

Meh and meh. My 2.0L MKIII had the wet weather issue (where it refuses to start), and there was a small oil leak with a head gasket that was slowly going bad. Otherwise, I managed to not have any engine problems over the three years that I had it, the only issue was the bad suspension bits, and then the transmission going out.

IMO:

For a beginner's car, the MKII is a much-better choice than the MKIII. BUT! The MKIII is going to ride and drive a little "better," that is, obviously be a bit more "modern" in style and execution.

For that price range I would say get a nice vr6 mkIII gti/jetta glx. I have a 2008 gti and am a huge vw nut, along with my friends. You really cant go wrong with a vr... I regret not getting one!

My freind has a VR6 Jetta and loves it. I found one MKIII with a VR6 but he has a few boy racer parts and for some reason I have the feeling that he didn't really take care of it. I don't know why but I just have this feeling that the car was beat pretty good.
Anyway, since you said that you and your freinds are VW nuts, could you give me some more info on the G60, because some people say that it is bad news, than others say that when taken care of, like the one that I am looking at, they can be great motors.

Here is a little update for you. I am still checking everyday for a new car, I just found 2 Corrado SLCs near my house, one is black with tan leather and is in perfect condition, it also has some sweet BBS wheels:tup:. Then there is another one in Mulberry metallic that needs a little work. They both have around 125,000 miles no aftermarket stuff, which I think I am going to do myself.
That white Corrado I was drooling over was sold last week. I called the guy 3 times about the car and I was even in Delaware this weekend to look at it and when I got home I got a phone call saying that it was sold. So, I had my hopes up for the last 2 weeks only to get shot down, wonderful.

It happens. I nearly got a screaming good deal on a fifth generation Civic Si when replacing my Jetta back in the spring. The day I called the guy when I had time to look at it and drive it was the day he sold it. Oh well...

Yeah, I think I'm over it now, I was more mad at the fact that I didn't get a call when he sold it so I didn't get my hopes up too much. Right after I got off the phone with him I went back to looking for GTIs and Corrados. This is what I found. It has the VR6, leather, low-ish milage, and it's basically a blank slate. The only thing that worries me is the r-title.

R-Title? What does that mean, has it been in an accident?

I'd be wary with that. a car CAN be pieced back together, but they're usually never quite the same...

Here is a quick little update for you guys.
I have still been looking around for just about any Volkswagen I can get my hands on, and recently on auto trader and on vwvortex I found 2 Corrados.
Number one I am actually in the process of talking to the guy about. But right now my dad and I aren't really sure if the whole this is real or if it is a scam. The guy is selling what appears to be a mint condition 1993 SLC with 115,00 miles on it for 3,454. He said that he had a guy offer 4,500 for it but his loan was rejected. We sent him a email once and got a late response, but the response was good. He said the car is sitting in a wharehouse waiting to ship because he was going to ship it to the first guy. He will ship it to my house and I would have 3 days to decide if I want it or not, if not I send it back for no charge. Here it is. Sounds too good to be true.

And here is the second one. The ebay page has a lot of info, but I haven't contacted the dealer about it, the interior has a lot of stains in it, it is completely stock, and is a little on the high side for the price considering the condition. This is it.

UPDATE: For those of you that actually care, I was scammed. The first Corrado was just a scam to steal my money, luckily my parents and I were smart enough to look deeper into this whole "buying process" he was talking about and we didn't jump right in to buy the car. So know I am looking into Golfs and Jettas a little bit more.

Excuse the double post but I have some good news. Today my dad and I finally went out to look at some Volkswagens today. We were talking to two guys that live close to our house, one had a Corrado with a G60 and the other had a Scirocco with a 16V.
The Scirocco is white and is in really good condition and only has 100,000 miles on it. The only issue is the driver's seat. The motor runs nicely. This is it.
The Corrado was what I really wanted to see, until I got up close to it. The body was in rough shape. It had alot of scratches, the area under the spoiler was never repainted, and the paint was done poorly. The interior was missing pieces, was torn in places, dirty to the point where cleaning it wouldn't even work, and there was hot antifreese on the floor of the front passenger side. The only good thing about it was the motor. It had a rebuilt stock supercharger on it and a cat back exhaust. He took my dad and I for ride and it was fun. The car pulled hard, you could feel the supercharger and hear it, it was a pretty quick car, which was suprising since there were three of us in it along with 4 rims and tires in the trunk and next to me in the back.
So, my dad is going to talk to the guy with the Scirocco about the price and see what we can do. In the beginning, and I still do, really want a Corrado. But after thinking about it, I am ok with a Scirocco. What do you guys think?

Just ok with a Scirocco? If I were you I'd be jumping allll over that car. The condition of it seems absolutely perfect, and the 4k asking price is perfect.

The Corrado sounds like a mess.

That Scirocco looks really nice. They guy also has a Corvette and a Wrangler so he probably took care of it. Although it looks like they're all going for $3000 to $5000 on autotrader. So maybe you should try and find it's history or something. Hopefully it wasn't a weekend autocrosser or something.

That second Corrado from ebay looked pretty nice. Top Gear was saying that the VR6 ones fit the bill for a good "future classic."

It'll be good to see another Dubber on the boards!

Yeah, the Corrado was a mess. And when I said that I was ok with a Scirocco, I meant that after seeing it my thoughts about it were changed and I realized how nice they really are. Pictures don't really do them justice.

Scirocco 16Vs are sweethearts, and with mileage that is that low, it certainly would make for a great car to not only have some fun with, but also to learn how to maintain properly. The good news is that parts shouldn't be too expensive by comparison to newer VWs, but because its a little more rare, that could be a bit different. Nevertheless, most of it is driven by parts off of the GTI and GLI of the era, so, interchangeability FTW.

Well, I haven't updated this in a while. For those of you who don't know, I have looking for a car for a few months now. I recently got my license and now my parents are really pushing me to find something. So here is what I have found lately.
1993 Volkswagen Corrado
1999 Volkswagen GTI
There are 2 other corrados that I have been looking at. One needs work its got a VR6, leather interior, BBS, it just needs some paint. My parents are actually ok with it.CLICK.
The other doesn't have a lot of information and no pictures, so that one is probably out of the question.
Right now, I really like the Corrado from New York. My mom wants me to try and see if I can meet with the guy somewhere closer. I doubt that will happen though because my dad is not really willing to travel far for a car. The GTI is ok, the guy at the car dealer is willing to sell it to us for around 3,500 and my parents would give me the rest of the money to do what I want with it. I was hoping that it would have either the VR6 or the 1.8T, but it has the 2.slow instead. I'm running short on time because my parents are really pushing me, so any advice is good.

I never drive a Corrado VR6, just a Corrado G60 and is a great machine!

But thinking correctly my choice would be the Golf GTi just because:

- Is younger.
- Has a good general appearance.
- Also has a good engine.
- and with the rest os the money your parents would give, you can put a proper rims on the Golf.

:D:tup:

I would go with the far newer car (the GTI) in this case, since 10-years-old versus 15-16 is big difference. The dealer stands a chance of standing by their work, if you have a big issue more than the private party owner, too.

It also doesn't need a paint job that will leave a you a week without a car, minimum.

That paint job will also put that car up around the price of the other ones.

And the MKIV GTIs are good cars. It's not a car you'd be going wrong with for the most part. And they are very easy to do mods to because of the tuner/VW culture that was built off it.

That black 93 Corrado looks nice, but ewwwww to the automatic seatbelts. I'm glad we never got those damn things over here.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm still not sure what I am going to do though. I spent all afternoon looking at Corrados and GTIs.

My hunt is now over, I started looking 6 months ago and now I have my first car! I am the proud owner of a 1990 Volkswagen Corrado G60!!!
Today my dad and I drove about an hour and a half to Oxford, PA. I thought we were just going to look at the car today and talk about it later, but my dad had different plans. We looked at it for a little, my dad got to drive it and then when we got back to the guys house he bought it. I was kind of shocked, I didn't know what was really going on. We all got in the seller's GTI( which was absolutely awesome and I plan on buying one myself someday) and headed to the tags and title place. Did some paper work, headed back to the guys house, he gave us some stuff and we talked for a little then we left. My dad drove the new car back while I drove my brother's Sebring. The entire time back I just stared at the car (I kind of have to because I had no idea where I was). It looked great. I am so happy right now.

Very cool!

Pics or it didn't happen!

(lol)

Seriously though, a big congratulations. Watch out, you may fall in love with VWs really quick...

It's too late to save me now, especially after sitting in the back of his GTI. I guess you could say that I was bitten by the VW Bug. Haha, oh that hurt. And I'll try to get pics at some point. I really want to wash it before taking them though. I want you guys to bask in the Mulberry metallic greatness.

Ohhh, the classic purpleish goodness! Thats the same color my Fox was!

Man, I love Mulberry :)
