Today in chemistry we did a lab involving double replacement reactions of aqueous solutions and the formation of precipitates. We reacted solutions of iron(III) chloride, cobalt(II) chloride, cobalt(II) nitrate, sodium nitrate, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide and saw if precipitates formed. Some of the solutions were 0.1M, others 0.2M. I forget which were which in terms of concentration. I think only the chlorides and hydroxides actually formed precipitates. Throughout the whole lab, we only saw iron(III) and cobalt(II) hydroxides form as precipitates. The iron(III) hydroxide was light brown and the cobalt(II) hydroxide blue, just like some other salts of those metals. For next class, we have to write a lab report, writing some equations (Balanced, complete ionic, net ionic) with it.
