This is the discussion thread for an article on GTPlanet:

How a PlayStation 6 Delay Could Impact Gran Turismo 8

The anticipated timeline for the next Gran Turismo game looks to be a little more in doubt, with reports over the last few days suggesting that Sony is pushing back the launch of the PlayStation 6 console on which it was expected to debut...

I do not expect new consoles until the AI bubble pops. RAM, Storage, and other hardware bits and bobs are going to be consumed by the all hungering AI beast and we'll be lucky to get 16GB RAM in our new computers let alone have enough global RAM left for new consoles.

Alternately new consoles will debut with 1000 dollar price tags which is functionally the same as no new consoles.

As a fan of the series since I was a child, I really miss the technical leaps that PD was able to do with GT series.

I remember till this day the first time that I saw GT3 on the screen. It was mind blowing, specialy when I was a PS1 owner. Then GT4 with absurd details and graphics... GT5 with day cicles, great models, rain effects on the windshield...

Now, I have a good game that is GT7 on my PS5, but with the total awareness that this game is not pushing the hardware at the max that it can provide. I really miss that feeling that I'm playing something special, that the team behind was making real magic to deliver the very best and beyond the hardware capabilities...

Hope GT8 can provide this again. (but I'm not surprised if will be a crossgen game again)

The GT4 to GT5 gap was rough wait, even with Prologue in there. Because GT4, as incredible as it was, showed its age pretty quick due to the still rapid pace of advancement in hardware around that time. PS2 to PS3 was a big jump.

I’m not sure what GT8 could bring to me that I’m not getting right now with GT7. And I’m still playing on PS4! Even with AC and AC EVO on PC I still enjoy coming back to GT to knock out the weekly stuff. I guess I’m in no hurry for GT8, and would love to just skip PS5 at this point.

As for AI.. it can go straight to 🤬 and burn there. My home track got bought out to be turned into a freaking data center. 75% of my track time in a year is usually there, anywhere else is a trip and a lot harder logistically. I guess building that new PC last year was a the right move after all as I’ll be doing mainly virtual miles now.

Get it out on PS5 with enhancement for the Pro. The PS4 has long held back GT7. Time to see what the PS5 can truly do.
Isn't that an argument for GT8 releasing on PS6?

If it is released on PS5, you might get 1-2 years of GT8 on PS5 exclusively, then the PS6 will release.

Presumably the game would then be re-released with a PS6 version... and you would have exactly the same scenario as GT7, where the new game is limited by features (particularly online) that have to work concurrently on two different consoles.

Since I deal with 4K cinematic footage with color grading and layered effects, I have to have a fairly sizable and fast internal storage system on my computer. I initially started with a 1tb M.2 internal with room to expand when I got the money. Now that I thought I had the money, the WD850X 4TB I was hoping to add for more project space went from around $220-280 to now approaching $1200 - more than half of what I paid for my entire system, including a 4K monitor. The ram I have inside (64GB (32x2) DDR5 Corsair chips) I purchased for around $120-150 at the end of 2024 I believe, and that’s been hovering around $1200-1300 last I checked.

I’m lucky that I bought everything new right when I did, but anyone who’s at a point where they need to replace failing parts or are hitting points where upgrades are necessary are screwed. To an extent I’m screwed too, because my internal only allows from for around two projects at once, and fast externals are also pricey, and make some aspects of the creative process chug. Apple laptops are about the only thing still inside the bubble of sanity, but my understanding is the new Apple chipsets will be impacted by the gouging some time around late spring, and I won’t have new laptop money by then.

It makes complete sense why consoles will have to be pushed back, it’s either that or try to sell systems for $2000-3000. No idea how game developers are supposed to plan around this, especially since we don’t know how long this component or AI bubble may last.

It would make sense to either push GT8 back, or orient 8 to maximize the PS5 and bring it out sooner - but this depends entirely on how much groundwork has been done on the core engine and structuring of the game already, and how it was originally aimed to be released. If they already have groundwork built and were building to a higher performance target it’s hard to scale that back, but if not a PS5 exclusive (and maybe later PS6 re-release) is more doable.

This ...I heard rumors that PS6 GPU is supposed to be on par with 5090 levels of power...those cards are currently going up to $4k, and what does a scaled down version of a 5090 for consoles look like, those thing are huge and I hate how much power they require.

I am 100% okay with a PS6 and GT8 delay and frankly I support it.

My PS5, the games available and on the way, as well as GT7 are perfectly satisfying in terms of quality, performance, and reliability. My PS5 may only be four years old but is showing basically zero signs of deterioration, particularly after I expanded its SSD storage. Obviously companies want to innovate but usually consumer sentiment is excited for the innovation - call me old, but I just have no desire for the next generation at this moment. I don't need it.

That also gives more time for Sony to further enhance the PS6, and more time for PD to iterate GT8. They've learned a lot of lessons from GT7, the game has consistently improved, and obviously we all expect GT8 to at minimum contain all of GT7's content. That said, much of the content that would really wow us has been wallowing in the mire of licensing for years now. PD's process is slow as molasses so giving them more time is probably always a good thing.

After spending 700 pound on a ps5 pro I’ll happily sit on this for a few more years, bring gt8 out on this or churn more new gr3/4 out as paid DLC if need be for sport mode users and extra add ons with sophy 3.0,

I still feel the pro has lots of life left and I won’t be upgrading needlessly

I guess this means there will be at least one more year of GT7 updates (next year), but will slow down somewhat by the later half.

By the end of this year, GT7 will have up to 600 cars and possibly 42-43 track environments. By the end of next year, probably around 630 cars and 43-44 environments.

If GT8 is pushed back to 2028-2029, perhaps we could see like 700+ cars and 50 track environments, considering that there isn't really a need to rebuild content from there.

But in terms of consoles, I do think we've hit the apex of graphics, it's more on fidelity and gameplay refinement/improvements that needs to be focused on (the reason why RAM is more important now).

Besides, I think the PS6 being pushed back to at least either of these two years should give the PS5 generation some breathing room to mature and diversify.

A new PS6 for what exactly ? What are the limitations of the PS5 ?

I don't even have the PS5, I didn't see the point upgrading for a bit nicer graphics and faster load times. Of course I'm missing out a few games (looking at you Expedition 33) but I'm still far from having exhausted the PS4 catalog.

The only good thing I see about a PS6 is the probable price drop for the PS5 and its games. Maybe I would upgrade then.

If GT8 comes out on PS5 before the release of a PS6, what do you people think the experience built bei PD would be?

- A Full Game, like GT7?
Many of you posted, that it wouldn't be that much different to GT7 and so, is unnecesary.

- Something like GT Sport?
I think Sport people are pretty ok with GT7 and i guess it's not worse than GT Sport in that field.

- A Demo/Prologue?
We alreade have a lot of content. More content wouldn't be that "exclusive". And a Techdemo for an "old" console? Don't think so.

- Something completely different?
It's still early in the morning. Please help me think what that could be. :)

I think delaying the PS5 to late 2028 or 2029 is the right move, as there have been so many games clinging to PS4 compatibility or being delayed beyond our most dismal expectations that we're only just starting to get the second wave of mid-lifecycle 9th gen-only games.

2020
  • Astro's Playroom
  • Demon's Souls with 4K stones

2021
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

2022
- No exclusives (GT7, Horizon: Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarök, Elden Ring are all also on PS4)

2023
  • Spider-Man 2
  • Baldur's Gate 3

2024
  • Astro Bot
  • Helldivers II
  • FFVII Rebirth
  • Tekken 8

2025
  • Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
  • 33 Obscure Eclairs
  • Mafia: The Old Country
  • Ninja Gaiden II Black
  • Wreckreation
  • Sword of the Sea (ok, now I'm really reaching)

This leads to three scenarios I can see for the next four years of GT.
(1) GT8 (or 8 Prologue) is released for PS5 in 2027/2028 for the 30th anniversary of the series. It's mostly a reworked GT7 with a more Power Pack-like campaign, released late in the console's lifecycle (like GT6 was) to keep players engaged for a few years while the next instalment for the next generation is in development, but unlike GT6 it'll be compatible with (and more hi-fi on) the upcoming hardware.
(2) GT8 is released as a PS6 exclusive, but the delays for the hardware give ample time for GT8 to be the most punctual release in the series since GT3 was released 13 months after the PS2's JP launch (or only 8 months in Australia). An exclusive GT8 in the first year of the PS6 convinces several people to buy new hardware.
(3) Numerous delays (slightly ameliorated by an unprecedented Spec IV and Pikes Peak update to GT7 in 2027) push GT8's release date to 18 months after the PS6 release. Because of the large player base and PD's familiarity with masochism cross-gen post-release support, GT8 is simultaneously released for PS5 and PS6.

I'm hoping for (1) or (2).

If GT8 is pushed back to 2028-2029, perhaps we could see like 700+ cars and 50 track environments, considering that there isn't really a need to rebuild content from there.
There is a need to improve something that is lacking until now, such as AI.
A new PS6 for what exactly ? What are the limitations of the PS5 ?
Something like Sophy is GPU heavy even for PS5.

Let GT8 launch only on the PS5 for now. It's what we've all wanted for GT7 in the first place before it went cross-gen.
?
Get it out on PS5 with enhancement for the Pro. The PS4 has long held back GT7. Time to see what the PS5 can truly do.
@Lux Klonoa and @TheNormsk I don't get it, you complain that PS4 held back GT7 but you want GT8 on PS5 ?? The issue will be the same.
Hope GT8 can provide this again. (but I'm not surprised if will be a crossgen game again)
I think there's a bit of rose tainted glasses there. GT7 is amazing in 4K and I think we are in diminishing return era now in terms of graphics, compared to the rapid evolution we've seen in the past where every new generation of hardware was cranking up visuals significatively
I believe GT8 will still be released for PS5 at least by the middle of next year. PD will certainly hold a 30th anniversary event for Gran Turismo, and yes, I'm almost certain it will be released in 2027.
I think you are very very optimistic.

@Famine what do you think about the Power Pack - does something like that more happen like PD tells Sony "we have this idea, that we want to realize" or more like Sony telling PD "what about this as a late monetization method as GT8 is still far away"?

Same question for GT8. Is PD fully in controll of what it will look like and when it's done or does Sony have a say in the date and the content (Full Game or a niche/demo/prologue next).

I could see PD not having much of a say in the matter and being told it's for PS5 and will be available on PS6 when the console drops.

However, being real, there's not a massive leap still to happen graphically on PS5. So I'd be hoping that GT8 will be more time spent on gameplay tweaks and more content vs trying to improve how it plays or looks. Prioritising more cars and tracks and a more fleshed out career mode. They have the museum, scapes etc all nailed and will be a nice straight copy over.

Think GT5 to GT6. Just my two cents.
