So there has been some recent discussions surrounding how to tune a car to ensure a competitive enduro race.

What I want to ask is this: Does anyone have any good stories on close enduro's? Did you enter the last corner of the 'ring, in 1st place, in the rain only to ingloriously crash or spin out only to come 5th?

Bear in mind there is a thread for enduro tunes already so avoid those please, what I want is to be regaled with epic stories of nail-biting victories or tales of folks dedicating 24 or less hours of their lives to a race only to suffer a heartbreaking soul destroying loss and probably throw their TV out the window:banghead:

:gtpflag:

Currently i'm playing the Suzuka enduro with Yamauchi's GT-R, i'm in lap 90++ and it's pouring down!

On lap 109 i'm a lap front of the 2nd one and the rain indicator drops to 99% for the first time!

So i think this is it!!! But noooo.....with slick tires they catch up real fast and on lap 115 i'm in the 3rd position...! :indiff:

I tried all the available tires that i have and i'm quicker with SS, so i turned it off and now i'm going to start again from lap 90++!

So i think it will be a close battle!!!

hahaha this is what I'm talking about, make sure you keep us updated mate!

The Suzuka one is a long race, sore shoulders lasted for ages lol

Thankfully I was lucky enough to avoid rain though :trouble:

45 seconds ahead. I didn't overpower, i had a good strategy.

I won one of my Ring 4hr races by around 8 seconds once - having only taken the lead on the last lap as I passed the pits. Does that count?

My closest was also aroung 40-45 secs at the 4hr Nurburgring in a Toyota Altezza Touring Car,,,Great fun that one.

The two closest I've had unfortunately were both B-Spec...do they count?

Here the report I made to a group of friends about a close-loss in the Tsukuba 4 hours Roadster Event. This was in Spec I, I'm now doing it again with Spec II (Thanks PD for the saves, PS3 is currently turned OFF :D ) and so far the main differences are two:
a) stints are longer;
b) AIs lap other AIs more efficiently than before.

It's a long read, but I guess this is what the OP asked for :)

So, here a few guidelines for you guys that don't regard offline events as steps to game completion (fielding the X2010 whenever possible or in specific races - like this one - fielding OVERTUNED CARS).

These guidelines won't assure you a win, but they will put you in contention. And, most probably, you will indeed win the race.

Car: Go for a premium Miata, the most basic and older model (don't have access to the PS3, will report later exactly what car I used, but it's the first bodywork, with retractable headlights).

Tyres:Sports Hard

Setup: Mine had stage 1 engine; racing air filter; racing catalystic converter; oil change. Sports suspension (the one that allows you to lower the ride height but not every other tweaks). Fully customizable LSD

Target lap time:1.09'000 with fresh rubber. If you can do better, detune the car.

Other settings: NO assists, including ... NO ABS. If possible, for G25 users, go for the H-Shifter and clutch. Really a step up in the joy of the overall experience

My race report:

INTRODUCTION

No previous training whatsoever, I went in with a mildly tuned Miata and no idea on how competitive the field was. Just for the fun I decided to race using the clutch and H-Pattern shifter, even if that is a major time loser for me, because not only miss-shifts happen very often for an untrained gamer, but also because that changes fundamentally the way I play normally ... I go from left-foot braking to right-foot braking and that is confusing, sometimes leading to mistakes.

Now the actual report. I'll do it "twitter style"

FIRST STINT - 0:00 to 0:50

- Race start and first few laps are a total mess due to no-abs, right foot braking, no practise in shifting with clutch ... no prior testing ... etc

- 5 laps in: I got " a grip" on things and started to lap consistently between 1.10s and 1.11s. I was last, of course, almost half a lap down on race leader (+/- 25 seconds).

- said "grip" allowed me to crawl back into race pace, very, very slowly gaining time on 11th place ( I could see it in the distance in the back straight), but almost nothing on the leader ...

- the race was clearly defining itself in two groups, as the field of cars started to spread out. A leading Group with 3 cars, then a few scattered cars then a second group with 5 or 6 cars. all racing close together ... and then ... quite a distance away, totally alone ... me

- After a litle over 30 minutes my laptimes started to suffer. Slightly but surely, I wasn't able anymore to do 1.10 ... and it became increasingly hard to achieve 1.11. After 40 minutes a good lap would be a low 1.12 already.

- I was still last, very close now to 11th place, but slowly and surely my recovery rate stalled, and after a while he (and the pack he was racing with) started to pull away again.

- By minute 0:50 I was already 40 seconds down on the leader and IAS still showed no sign of slowing their own pace, quite the contrary. Frustrated I headed for the pits. Thought about quitting ... I'm glad I didn't

SECOND STINT - 0:50 to 1:40

- Only changed the tyres, still had more than half tank of fuel.

- But I decided that second stint would be made in my usual race trim ... meaning ... bumper cam, paddle shifting, left-foot braking

- (I thought ... "If I get too quick and it spoils the fun, I'll do the last stint as I did the first" ... was not to be)

- Left the pits right behind race leader. Total humiliation, I was AI-LAPPED

- Still no signs of pace slowing for them. WTH are they cheating ?!?!?!?

- To add to my misery I do a silly mistake in the outlap, at the hairpin before the back straight and as a result:
a) watch race leader disappear into the distance;
b) 2nd placed AI got glued to my car's rear bumper ...

- after settling in again with the new/old habits I start to lap consistent 1.09s and ... at last ... I'm gaining time on race leader.

- In any case, I guess AI benefit from slipstream also, because it took me a few laps to shake 2nd place off

- From then on, and up until 1:20 I do a lonely race, getting closer and closer to race leader, but at a desperately slow recovery pace. My lap times start to deteriorate again and after a while, all laps shoen on screen are already 1.10 ... then 1.11

- However, race leader finally catches up with the other back markers.

- And that changes things, because he gets stuck there (no blue flags in GT5 )

- Between 1:20 and 1:35 I get him, unlap myself, and for the first time I do some overtaking and STOP being in this race's LAST POSITION !!!

- (I get to 6th, entering the no-man's land between the faster and the slower miatas)

- By 1:40, however, my tires were (again) shot, I wasn't able to gain time on the guys behind me and I was in fact losing time on 5th placed car (I could see his dot in the map slowly but surely pulling away).

- I was lapping in the high 1.12s by now, so .. totally puzzled for the apparent lack of tire wear in the AI field ... I pitted again.

THIRD STINT - 1:40 to 2:30

- Again, no refueling, I had almost half a tank by then

- Leave the pits in 8th position, and still in front of race leader (still mingled with the pack of back markers).

- Returning to a 1.09 secs per lap steady pace, this time I took the time to notice that a visit to the pits, without refueling, costs us about 30 seconds (small pit lane, quick entry and quick exit)

- I start to move up the field in a way unexperienced so far. 7th, 6th, 5th ... the field is now all mixed up and the AI's weakness in overtaking among themselves really shows now)

- 4th, 3rd, 2nd are still far but within this stint's reach I think. Can't be sure where / what dots they are, only know the difference to race leader and "he" is still more than half a lap away.

- Anyway, I'm getting there, and by now quite confident this race will in the end be mine. Still puzzled by them not pitting, but I sense a definite slowing of their pace, even in free air.

- Then we hit the 2:00 mark (half race) and I think ... "either there's a bug and they don't pit at all unless they're become of fuel ... or they are doing a one-stopper because they're not human at tire-saving "

- At 2:05 ... a car pits. And the pit dance begins, lasting about 10 minutes /10 laps of the race.

- When it ends, by 2:15 ... I am RACE LEADER !!!!!

- 10 seconds clear on 2nd place, I manage to build this gap to 15 seconds until, by 2:20 (race time) again I start to lose pace. And the gap remains with the help of traffic.

- Now was the time for strategic thinking. I had been doing 50 minutes stints. If I did this one also, I still had 10 minutes to race, and would pit at 2:30 race time.

- That would leave me with 90 minutes to do, in two stints of 45 minutes.

- It was a safe bet, so I decided to stay out until 2:30.

- When I entered, I was really struggling with destroyed tires and 2nd place had gained 10 seconds on me so I was only 5 seconds in front. And having an amazing race I didn't think this game could give me!!!! And of the best kind ... a true endurance race

FOURTH STINT - 2:30 to 3:15

- Again, no refueling needed, just tires.

- I still had about 1/4 of the tank of fuel. Enough for the next 45 minutes, although it was clear that I would need some fuel in my last stop.

- Reentered the track in 3rd position, about 25 seconds down on race leader.

- This was my best stint by far. I was confident, I knew the car now, and already had close to 150 laps made in this race.

- I managed a few 1.08 sec laps early on and then, because both 2nd and leader got into traffic, I got them, passed them, and distanced myself from them.

- When the 45 minutes ended I was leader, 30 seconds up on 2nd place and thinking to myself ... "I bagged this so perfectly maybe I really should return to the H-PAttern, clutch, right-foot braking in this last stint".

- And that was my plan, until ... **** happened!

- I miscalculated the entry into the pitlane, and hit the pit wall not entirely headon, but hard enough so that the car had a "hiccup" in its course at the moment of pit entrance.

- And this happened ... AI took over the car, managed to resume the normal pit lane procedures and speed, and pitted. BUT ...

- ... I didn't get the popup screen where you select what tires to use and how many liters to reuel

- The car stopped in the pits .... and stayed there ...

- Gave me time to think lots of things, and use many words I normally don't use.

- I thought at some point about quitting, because it all seemed as if the car was still waiting orders and would never leave the pits.

Until ... it did.

- And the tank was FULL

FIFTH AND FINAL STINT - 3:15 to 4:00

- Left pitlane in 5th position. 37 secs behind leader

- After 30 minutes of the best driving I could achieve, I was 2nd. 10 seconds behind leader.

- Still improved and got as close as 7,5 seconds behind leader

- Then, two things happened. With less than 10 minutes to go.

- 1. Leader got free air, with no prospect of changes unbtil the end of the race

- 2. My tires were kaput.

- I was lucky to hold on to second place in the end ... 14 seconds behind the leader ... and 0.3 on 3rd placed car.

- Tired. Frustrated. Nervous. Irritated. ALl and everything you guys can imagine

- After a while, with a cold beer and some reflexive thoughts .... I realized I had experienced one hell of a race. Like they should always be, if devs understood how important the AI is; a close field is, consistency in racing is.

If anyone read it all, congratulations. And I hope this write up will serve its main purpose. To provide a Miata /Tsukuba /4 hours good race for anyone that wants to actually race it and not only add it to the "completed events check list"

I'm in the middle of a 24 Hr race at the Nurburgring currently about 11 hours in using the FTO Super Touring car up against the Audi R8 '01 Race Car. We both lap every 4 laps, he is faster but his pit stops take longer so I always get back past him. Provided I don't have a huge off it could come down to what part of the cycle of 4 laps the race finishes on who wins. Unless it rains of course in which case I'll win easily. Really enjoyable racing so far!

I guess I forgot(... supressed...) that I lost a close one at the Indy 500 race when I ran out of fuel on lap 198 after just passing the pit entrance so I guess I was still on lap 197 and beginning 198 when the car gagged on me...My lead was around 7-8 laps but I knew I was hooped because it was still 2.5 miles away from a splash of fuel and that the pit entry and exit at Indy are quite long no matter what your reason for pitting...I finished a distant 8th...
If I have to lose that way at least it was one of the sprint enduros and not a mega-hour ordeal.

What do you think about a .4xx win on Suzuka 1000?
I was on a Yellow Hat GT-R with some added weight, during the hole race I was first by 40 +/-10 sec or fourth by around 45+/- 10 sec due the difference on pit stops
But on lap 176 I made an epic mistake, and suddenly the second was only 3 seconds behind, and then on the last lap entering the chicane another mistake, couldn't take the pressure :ouch:, and there he was an angry Arta NSX just 1 second behind, passed through the chicane with that beast hitting my rear bumper, and when we entered the straight he was closing the gap more and more, finally the finish line!!!!
I can swear that I was shaking by the end of that race.

The 3 cars close to me
Arta NSX 0.4xx
Raybrig NSX 1.5xx
Takata Dome NSX 2.4xx

300 laps ahead on the 9hr Tsukuba I smoked the competition lol

HAHA I think that qualifies dude! Epic stuff!! .4 on Suzuka is one hell of an achievement man, if he'd have pipped you at the line would your TV still be in one piece?

:boggled:

What a way to go!! That's one thing with enduro's, the false sense of security can often be a downfall, gotta keep those concentration levels up! I wouldn't recommend beer for it either, plays havoc with lap times!!

Sounds like the makings of a classic! How you going now? still close?

You might want to get your mathz skillz cranking mate, you don't want to run out of fuel at a crucial point!

Sure, BoB's are people too ya know

I tend to put BoB in the RBx2010 so there's never a close race for me, considering I am asleep for most Bspec races I prefer he is in a car that not even a BoB can lose in hahaha

Damn straight it counts! 8 seconds is nothing on the 'ring, one slip up and that lead is gone!

Taking lead on last lap = epic satisfaction but its gotta get the nerves racing too lol

I've just finished another race there. There's a slight issue with saying how close the finish was because, unbelievably, the lead AI car pitted despite the 4 hours being up, but the last two gaps were -7s at the gantry and -2.2s at Antoniusbusche. Had he driven at the line it would have been just under a second.

After FOUR HOURS

Here the report I made to a group of friends about a close-loss in the Tsukuba 4 hours Roadster Event. This was in Spec I, I'm now doing it again with Spec II (Thanks PD for the saves, PS3 is currently turned OFF :D ) and so far the main differences are two:
a) stints are longer;
b) AIs lap other AIs more efficiently than before.

It's a long read, but I guess this is what the OP asked for :)

Pretty epic race. I bet if you had made your long stop for fuel earlier in the race rather than your last stop you could have saved the time when it really mattered and taken the win.

Mate thank you for that brilliant rundown, I will be trying that for sure I think! might need a few sedatives first to help calm the nerves though because that is one epic challenge!

Still, sounds like it was another epic race at the 'ring :)

Awesome!

I will be doing the 9hr Tsukuba tonight, anyone have any suggestions for cars? I am thinking maybe one of the stealth cars but I want a competitive race as well... decisions decisions :nervous:

That entire thread is set up for finding tight and challenging N4 endurances. Or just the crappiest car you can still win with :D

I think you can probably count 10,000+ laps of the Type V circuit amongst the participants of that thread.

3rd on Nürburgring 4h with Alfa Giulia TZ2. The two ahead were faster on track but had to pit more often than me so it as a quite thrilling race. Never stood much of a chance though. On the very last lap of the race, about halfway to the finish line, I suddently spotted a car in my rear view mirror and as I wasn't sure if that was the 4th car in the race I had a busy time trying to get some distance between me and him and it was a really close race up until the finish line. Turned out though that it was car number 6 that I had lapped hile he was in the pit and now he caught up with me (but a lap behind) because he had better tires than me.

Oh, and thanks to the endurance glitch I ended up as first because the race ended before car 1 and 2 could make it to the finish line :P

what is the endurance glitch? am not familiar!

Sounds like an epic race you had there!

Endurance races based on time and not distance will classify a car that has completed the time before completing their final lap temporarily ahead of a car that is still on its final lap and has not yet finished if it has completed the same number of laps.

So if I'm on lap 27 when the time finishes, any car that crosses the line to complete its 26th lap - the same number as me - after the time has finished but before I finish my 27th will be temporarily classified ahead of me. This isn't an issue as the race doesn't finish until I do, and when I do I'll be classified ahead again. It is an issue for the AI though, as they can be on their 27th lap when time expires and the player can complete their 26th, be classified ahead of them and immediately "X" through the screens to retrieve the 1st place money and XP.

Wow, I wonder if PD will fix that

Cowboys965
Wow, I wonder if PD will fix that

wow... that's nuts!

I'm about to compete in Laguna enduro drunk with my sober mate in an underpowered car, not chosen yet, so will be very interesting! I'll keep ya all posted!

PS my sober mate last played GT2 & never used a wheel so this will be fun haha

It's technically not incorrect - if a car on the lead lap breaks down after the time has elapsed but before it can cross the finish line it should DNF and the car that completed the most laps in the time before DNFing is the winner. It's just that it can be exploited by the player.

Since it only applies to timed races and you have to complete the same number of laps as the lead car after the elapsed time, it's not a brilliant exploit as you still have to drive the same distance - which means, 4, 9 or 24 hours of working at it either way.

why would you want to try & exploit an enduro anyway? let's face it you can drive any car you want so winning is no huge feat BUT if you choose your car properly you can you can have an epic & satisfying race!

We're 38 laps into Laguna enduro & here's the deal so far: I bravely gave my mate the go ahead for 1st 15 laps (so I get last 15) and he got lapped and pitted when I was to take over then in 15 laps I got a 15 second lead & pitted bringing him out in 3rd, he's currently in 1st on 40th lap & is starting to spin a lot haha

We using Ferarri 512BB '76 on SS & with a guy who's not a GT5er plus me who is its a sweet race, so close!!!!

I`m currently at the end of lap 79 in the Suzuka enduro, i have a 70 sec. lead while entering the pits. The AI will pit in about 2 laps i think.

Currently i'm playing the Suzuka enduro with Yamauchi's GT-R, i'm in lap 90++ and it's pouring down!

So i think it will be a close battle!!!

i played the race again and came 1st! I start pushing from the beginning (lap 90+) and finished 3 laps front of the 2nd one. It was hard one for sure!

Well I did the miata endurance race, was 8 laps a head when I suspended the race, with about an hour and half left to go. Turn the game back on the next day... I get the glitch... so let the AI drive the rest of the race for me... had no back tires thank god i had about 1/4 a tank left of gas at the end... but with an 8 lap lead with 2 hours to go... the AI won it for me by 1 sec... 1 sec... the last 10 laps I was sweating bullets... even my roommate who doesnt even like racing games let alone cars was rooting for me lol.

From another thread. One of my best races I think.
Will27
Yesterday, I re-did the Laguna Seca enduro with a Daihatsu Midget II. It was a very tight race, with the Corvette Z06 able to go 4 seconds faster per lap for the first 10~15 laps after pitting for fresh tyres.

I pitted once on lap 46. At the end of the first stint, my front tyres were too worn, and I knew that the Corvette was in second now and had no one holding him up for me. So for the second stint, I had to drive flat out the whole time, and look after my front tyres better. From lap 50 to lap 80 the Corvette was on my tail, then he pitted for fresh tires.

Thought it was over? Nope. In 9 laps, he closed my 28 second gap to nothing, and was back on my tail for the last lap. I managed to win by 0.961s with no weaving or blocking, just driving hard every lap.
