How do I connect 2 PS3s locally?

I just got a 40g, already had an 80 and was wondering if I can create a LAN and if so, then how?

A LAN to do what exactly??

There's nowt you can do apart from maybe a couple of games that use LAN, even then it will all be setup in game....

If it's connected online, you probably already have a router. In which case, just plug the other PS3 into the router as well. You won't be able to play full online, though, and as mentioned above, you'll need to find a game that actually supports LAN play.

You use an ethernet cable.

Not if he has a wireless network in his house, the router can be setup to control everything.

Again, no need to use cables to connect it to the router, it can all be done wirelessly

I dont know about you, but I tried doing a LAN game between a PS2 and PS3 on GT4 and it just wouldn't work. Worked fine with 2 PS2's, and I dont have a 2nd PS3 to see if it works with 2 PS3's.

I also tried it a few months back. The network game worked perfectly, right up to the point the race started. Then both consoles lost track of the position of the other console's car.

I might get chance to try it with two PS3s in the nearish future, but I hold little hope.

What console are you using? I have a UK 60GB which emulates! If you have a US/JPN 60GB or 20GB then that'll prob be why you actually got to start a race, cos is uses PS2 hardware instead of emulation.

Mine messed up at the point where the 2 consoles begin communicating.

I was hosting an AV shootout for a couple weeks, and so we had three PS3's among a lot of other gear, and just for kicks we played a few online games like High Stakes Poker and Calling All Cars, with each PS3 wirelessly connected to my router, and it worked just fine. All we were doing was simply playing online, creating a game and inviting the others to play. 👍

The downside though, is unlike a LAN connection, you are not only limited by the bandwidth of your ISP connection, but you are also sharing that bandwidth with all the computers and PS3's connected to that router... which can certainly cause lag or even drop outs for games that need a lot of bandwidth.

Still, it worked fine for us.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to get another GT4 and try it out. J

As pointed out earlier in this thread, your 40 gigger won't play the GT4 game! H3rmaN has a very valid point as well withthe fact that your 80 gig only emulates BC through software instead of having full compatability by using the EE from the PS2 onboard. On that point, does anyone know whether or not the emulation adds to the load on the internal system bus in the PS3 thus causing it to slow down or even lock up as it tries to decide which jo to do. That is if you are multi tasking with the console. Such as downloading a few demos while playing GT4 or maybe even a more intricate PS2 game that would require more of the processor. I mean, it is still a compuer after all.

This does have my head a spinnin with all sorts a idears. I just might look out for a used 20 gig in a few months and see what all I can do with it.

I think you can play GTA4 on LAN, I haven't tried it though so I could be wrong.

So are there PS3 games that I can play on a local network? Also I see now what you mean about the 40 not playing PS2 games.
J

APPARENTLY, Rainbow Six: Vegas has LAN play, but I am not near my PS3 for another week or so, so I cant check, but if you have 2 copies of it you can try it out.

Google is your friend! ;)

To make it simple I would try using a hub and ethernet cables or, even just a cross over cable before trying to set it up wirelessly.

If you dont have a hub your router should (the 4 or 5 ethernet ports at the back of your router are effectively a hub).
