If it's connected online, you probably already have a router. In which case, just plug the other PS3 into the router as well. You won't be able to play full online, though, and as mentioned above, you'll need to find a game that actually supports LAN play.

Like GT4 for example.
I dont know about you, but I tried doing a LAN game between a PS2 and PS3 on GT4 and it just wouldn't work. Worked fine with 2 PS2's, and I dont have a 2nd PS3 to see if it works with 2 PS3's.
I also tried it a few months back. The network game worked perfectly, right up to the point the race started. Then both consoles lost track of the position of the other console's car.
I might get chance to try it with two PS3s in the nearish future, but I hold little hope.

So are there PS3 games that I can play on a local network? Also I see now what you mean about the 40 not playing PS2 games.
