My HP pavillion laptop keeps over heating and turning itself off.
It's had viruses but there gone now it's well used from '07 with nvidia graphics card, mostly use it for internet browsing and apps.
Any help would be great.

My Pavillion also gets very hot. Make sure the area around the fan vents are clear. If you are confident in doing so, open it up and give the area a clean.

It is also possible to turn down the cpu trading heat for processing power.

I think I read somewhere that Nvidia mobile GPUs had overheating problems, but it may not affect your model and I may be wrong.

Make sure the vents aren't blocked like DQuaN said, and you could give them a hoover out with a hoover. I think you have to do this a certain way though as to not break the fan so could someone confirm this?

Cleaning the laptop's insides from dust and replacing the CPU/GPU thermal paste helps a lot (after 6 years they may have turned into "concrete"), you should take your laptop to a skilled technician if you're not confident enough to do so. A cooling platform with a big fan may also help if the bottom panel is vented and exhaust is located at the sides.

So I can help by turning the cpu down?
Anything else like brightness etc?

It has a dedicated graphics card if that makes a difference?

Seeing as it's a laptop I doubt the BIOS has the right features to be able to mess with the CPU voltage and clock speed etc, but you could have a look.

Also I doubt brightness will have much of an effect at all.

Right I'm going to take apart my laptop and re-apply the GPU and CPU paste by following tutorials.
I'm going to clean the vents of dust using cotton buds, swabs snd water.
Is there anything I'm forgetting and is there any advice I should take before doing this?
I believe this is definitely the problem and I shoud be able to fix it.
Any more help would be great.;)

My old Pavilion Dv6 from 2009 overheated in 2011 because of the motherboard & GPU. It causes the screen to go black at boot up & makes so much noise!

Here's my old laptop (not my video).

Sold it a year ago and bought a 2012 Pavilion DV6 instead. As of 22 August, 2013, I have no issues with it what so ever!

I highly recommend that you should bring your laptop to a PC/Laptop specialist.

Right,I've got good news,my HP DV6700 laptops' overheating problems are solved!:D
I replaced the GPU and CPU thermal paste and cleaned out the exhaust vents.
But I've encountered a few more problems that I need help with, here goes:

performance is very sluggish when doing very simple web browsing.
I've deleted all cookies and browser history but this doesn't help.
I've tryed unistalling and disabling start up programmes but no joy.
I think I've unistalled a piece of software that helps with playback of videos because when I go on youtube, videos are very choppy and don't play smoothly at all.
I've played around with the control panel and tryed turning some graphics processing features off like lighting FX etc and deleted alot of unwanted files and software.
Also when I touch the mouse and surrounding aluminium trim( while it's on)I get an electric shock.
Any help would be great I'm so close to fixing a laptop through DIY.

You could try updating the graphics drivers, defragmenting the HDD and checking your RAM usage for starters.
I'm not sure why you are getting shocked by your trackpad but it shouldn't be harmful, though it must be annoying. Maybe a power supply or cord related issue?

Sounds like you made a short in the system. I would suggest checking the connections inside and make sure that the chassis is not shorting on a metal part.

Running a defragmentation, cleared out recycling bin and unwanted software.
Stiill slow.

EDIT:is process explorer a safe program and is there any freeware programs that can help?

As far as I know, explorer.exe is a vital process and disabling it renders Windows useless until the process is re-launched. You could also try disabling some visual effects from My Computer's advanced settings but I don't know if configuring them affects at all.
Are you sure you are getting constant internet speed and low ping?

I've found the reasons why my laptop was so slow.
Lots of unwanted files and software.
Finally one of the RAM modules wasn't in properly.(oops :dopey:)
But I still get electric shocks and there's no sound from the speakers and the letter P on the keyboard doesn't work properly.

Check to make sure the connection to the speakers are properly connected(Usually a tiny 2pin connector). If it's not that then it is something software related.

Well audio works with a headset so I'm not sure what means.

Ok I have a plan.
I'm going to get a replacement ribbon cable as the old one is worn.
A new keyboard,DVD drive and maybe a new battery.
Also my DVD drive doesn't work properly, should I get a new one or repair?
The wireless receiver(I forget what it's called) that lets connect to things wirelessly, internet etc doesn't work for some reason, any advice?

So the sound doesn't work, you get shocked when you touch the case, you need a new keyboard, DVD drive, possibly a battery and a wireless card. And you want to sink money into this pit?

Do yourself a favor and just buy a new laptop.

Yep. So far it sounds far more economical to buy a new laptop and then use the old thing for something else. Could be used as a game server or media server.

I know it sounds bad but I can fix it.
Sound works through headset so a cheap ribbon cable should do the job.
Keyboard should be relatively inexpensive.Likewise with DVD drive.
I'll open it up again and see why I'm getting shocked(in all senses of the word)and see if the wireless card is in properly.
The only thing that's bugging me is the battery.
I got my laptop from comet and it was the last one they had and they fitted a duff battery and they wouldn't replace it and it's as flat as a pancake so I just plug it in without the battery in.
Point being batteries aren't cheap.

My laptop won't boot up now because the ribbon cables are worn.
What do think my chances are of getting replacements?(from shops/stores)
I'm looking to replace the DVD drive but does it have to be a direct replacement or can I get any laptop DVD drive?
The wireless card works now,I just put the connections in properly.:dopey:

Look up replacement parts on ebay or amazon. Stores will not have the replacement parts.

Why not?
Is it because it's old?
Surely some store will have a replacement ribbon cable?
Not PC world of course but a computer repair store maybe?

Maybe but the chances they would have the replacement part is like finding a needle in a haystack and then having to pay more money than you'd ever want to. When a computer repair shop works on a laptop(Such as a cracked LCD screen) they order the parts from ebay or amazon from my experience. These parts can be a used article from another laptop or a brand new part from a Chinese seller most of the time. It is best to look up your laptop's model number to find the parts that you need.

Well I've already sourced the parts on amazon but I've dubious of ordering from them.
Hence the reason why I'm looking for alternatives.
BTW is the laptops model number on the bottom near MS proof of licence or warranty?
Oh,I've just noticed something it says on the bottom that it's a DV6700,but it says DV6000 on the screen, what's going on there?
Mis match parts?
