That's the one Cyril!

WTF! I think mine's loaded! Those things we call " A hane" is pressed down!Man ,I ain't touching this killer gun!

EDIT: That's not the one, it looks 100% like this one but I remebered the wooden grip was hand-made 👍

After 1900 many of these rifles were sold to civilians too. Yours probably got broken and someone fixed it by making a new grip.
Many had been modified too to fire hunting cartridges instead of the original bullet.
(I have such a modified version of the french equivalent, the Gras 1873).

I suggest you wrap it in some sheet or towel so that it doesn't fire (chances are extremely low but you never know) and take it to the nearest gunsmith. When the guy says it's safe, clean the gun and hang it in your room.

Put the bullets out, uncock the hammer and everything is fine. I think you need to uncock the hammer first, than put the bullet out. Its a single shot so I dont think there are more than one in the gun, pull the cartridge out of the chamber.

I Never shot a rolling block single shot. Just shoot semis and bolts.:sly:

Except that the hammer might be a bit rusty and hard to move.
But it looks on pic #3 that the cartridge is already fired (hole in the center).

And make sure it's not pointing at your foot. :dopey:

Looks like a single shot breech loader carbine.

Hang it on your wall.
Exactly. Polish it, remove the rust, clean it and refinish the wood.

It'll be a great conversation piece, as well as likely an antique.

If the bolt is hard to move, just sray some lube into it, and leave it overnight. If you are taking it to the gunsmith, try to put it in a metal container in the boot of the car, not pointing towards you. Try to put as much 'armour' between the gun and the side of the car as possible, so as to catch any bullet should it acciudentally fire.

Looks like this rifle came with a muzzle plug, to prevent moisture from getting inside the barrel. That's what can be inside the rifle.

Read all about your firearm here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_M1867

It's a .50 caliber carbine version of the regular M1867. Only one of 5,000 made (converted).

EDIT: Further reading indicates your rifle could be the 8x54mm Danish round. In the pic below, your rifle could either be chambered for round 1, or 3.

1- 8x58R Danish

2- .30 Gov't (.30-40 Krag)

3- 12.17x42R Norwegian rim fire
(.50-75-345)

4- .45-70 Gov't

http://www.simpsonltd.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_43&products_id=4598 Possible gun value. Remember, your rifle was a converted version of this rifle and lot less of those around, which means your fifle may be worth more.
