I'm surprised this event has been giving some folks a bit of trouble. I went through the event the other night, and the only time I fell back is due to a stupid mistake, though I was easily able to recover the lead.
I highly suggest throwing on God Mode (Skid Recovery) if you're having trouble, & keep practicing with the car. This car requires very precise throttle, brake, & steering movement, which is not an easy feat for the controller-folks, as I understand it. The first race at Fuji is even worse because even with the SKF on, the back will try to come around on the very last turns where you need very fluid braking input to keep it under control.
Also be sure to never try to cut a corner too close unless you're 100% you can do it without issue. Grass is the biggest enemy of this car; at the Monza race, I let the car's front left tire dig into the grass right as I beginning to brake for the chicane, and it immediately dogged to the right nearly throwing me into the barrier.
