That there's a replay available (i.e. a ghost) that you can race against. Highlight the leaderboard entry and press A to launch a race against it.

How do you save a ghost with your own times?

It automatically saves if you have enough space on your HDD

I have well over 20Gb left and I get a "Saving Ghost" message every time I finish a race but I don't get the paper clip. Perhaps only other drivers can see it.

That's weird.. I can see my own paperclips and even start a race against my own ghost.

You should be able to watch your own ghosts.

Your paperclip/ghost won't show on the normal leaderboards unless you posted a top 100 time - uses too much server space to host 20,000+ replays per track. been like that since fm2/3
Rivals mode seems to be different however since everybody has a ghost you can race against. this may be why there have been/are server issues.
