I know... :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck:

But I just got my ingrown cut out for the third time. Next time happens, I'm going to the foot doctor and they mentioned of burning my tissue in there so the nail won't grow there ever again, something like that.

Pics  :

I had all four sides of both big toes burned. When cutting them didn't work and pulling the entire nail off didn't work, they went to burning. Thirteen years later and still no ingrown. 👍

all i have to say is i almost lost my dinner, lol.

I have the same problem with ingrown toenails. what i don't like is what they do before they take it out.

The first time i got it done the guy said " okay, im going to give you a shot" so even though i HATE needles it was only one shot so whatever. so he puts the needle in then takes it out :scared:, then right away puts the needle in a different spot and takes it out :ouch:, then again almost 2 or 3 more times :banghead: :irked:. I was so frikin pissed off and it hurt so mother----in bad :( . I said "Hey! i thought it was only one shot!" all he said was sorry, i forgot to tell you :irked:

The second time, it was a different person and i personally asked him if i was going to get a million shots in my toe like the last guy and he, to my happiness, said "only one". this time was even worse though. he takes out this long needle puts it in my toe and goes so far down the skin on the bottom of my toe was showing where the needle was :nervous:.

.... so now i just do it myself. I just suck it up, grab some tiny scissors and cut it myself ( hurts soooooo bad too ). I don't get the root though. After my second visit I was supposed to go back where they would put something where the root was to stop it from growing but my parents moved me so now im stuck in a place i don't like with painful ingrown toenails.

I've got one right now. It's not the PITA everyone says they are. Maybe it's because this is the 3rd time I've had one on this toe. Oh well. I'll get it cut out eventually.

It's the third time on the same side of the toe.

I had it a year ago on the other big toe, and the same side of the toe as it is now (Right toe, right side)

I'm going to try and get all my corners cut for my toes, but I want to find out how much it'll cost. I lost my appetite for dinner also though

I have had two. The first one was really bad. If anything touched it, it hurt like no other. If I wore socks, it would grow around the fibers. Pulling socks out hurt so bad. One year later, I had another one. This time it was not nearly as bad, although it hurt more to pull it out.

What replaced that part of the nail? Dead nail. A whole quarter of my toenail was dead for about 4 to 5 months. Finally it started growing live nail and half of that is gone. It was pretty fun scaring my sister with it.

Getting them out is really a pain. After 5 min, though, everything is back to normal and no problems.

Saw 4?

I just pull up and clip the sides of my big toenails whenever they get tender. No big deal. All that blood looks a hot mess.

I've had one for nearly a year now, this time being located on the right of my right foot's big-toe.

I don't know what to do with it, everytime I wake-up in the morning there is a completely renewed ecosystem under the skin, and when I get home pulling off my socks reveals nothing more than pus-on-cotton.

I've always thought about cutting it out myself but it hurts too damn much, and I'm afraid if I did the toe would become even worse after a few days...

Go to a doctor.

You guys need to scrape under your toenails and cut them and stuff, yo. Wtf.

I know, I know. But then there is the prospect of massive needles and my whole nail being ripped off, and no doctors doing that on my damn toe. Hmm, i'll see how effective toe-nail scissor are tonight. I swear the side of my nail is close to emerging from the side of my toe...

Been there, done that - three times. Here's my advice - go to a specialist. The third time I was referred to a podiatrist by campus health services, that was a year ago, and its never been a problem since. I too hate needles, I had one of those quacks that treated my toe like a pincushion the first time. The podiatrist numbed the toe with what felt like the light snap of a rubber band, after that, I had no idea he was even cutting the nail piece out. They also use a chemical to 'burn' the side of the nail, preventing it from growing out and into the skin on the sides of the toe.

Also, home treatment works for a while, but in the end, it will be a lot worse when you do go to a doctor than it would have been if you'd have gone to the doctor in the first place.

I get them.

My left foot had a bad one, and I used to try and fix it myself, and it just got worse. I’d come back from school with blood on my socks just because the toenail was cutting my toe whenever I walked.

I went to a doctor and has the side cut off and it came back. So I went to a doctor again and it was a different doctor. He was great, haven’t had a problem since.

I’ve kinda got one in my right foot, but it doesn’t hurt so I haven’t gone to get it fixed.

The operation is pretty standard. Just a couple of really long needles that go stupidly deep, and then after that I don’t watch, but it feels pretty rough. :p

To anyone who needs to have it done: go for it, but bring a magazine. 👍

I used to get them all the time when I played football. To relieve that burning pain on the side try cutting a V shape at the top of your nail. Sometimes that can help. I used to treat mine with salt water twice a day and used a cream called Savlon. It cleared mine up.

You could also try placing small pieces of squashed up cotton wall in the side of the nail. It relieves the pressure of the nail digging into your skin.

I had ingrown toenails, both sides, both big toes.

I went to the doctor, removed both nails completely.

From then on when the nails grew back every month or so I take a thin pair of scissors and cut right into each side of my nails as far as I can in one straight cut, then pull out the side of the nail using nosepliers. It hurts a bit, there is usually a little blood, but the whole ingrown part gets pulled out.

Not had the pus/blood mess for 14 years now because of this method.

I've got my little 'surgery' down with so many years of practice, it takes about 5 mins every month or so and works no problems.

Something I couldn't do.

Does anyone know what the cause of an ingrown nail is?

I used to get them on my big toes (yeah, both of them). In the end I ended up getting a wedge resection – that is, where they actually scrape away the ingrown part of the growth plate where your nail grows from.

Usually if you cut your nail like this:

/ | instead of like | |

Toe nails are meant to be cut straight but not on an angle.

Does some one mind explaining how the podiatrist does the burning process?

Kudos if they can :)

I've got a problem with one of my big toes, I don't think it's an ingrowing nail though, it's sort of just infected. The side has lumped out and there's pus coming from it every now and then and when I went to the doctors he burned away some of the excess skin that was growing over because it was 'healing itself too well', gave me some antibiotics and sent me on my way.

That was about a month ago, it's pretty much the same now. Doesn't hurt when I pressurise it or anything though which seems strange.

I've done the home fix thing by cutting out the edges of the nails with clippers but they're not growing into places they shouldn't be anyway so I just need to get rid of the infection. :(

Go to the doctor and get it cut! Trust me, you'll feel relieved.

I'm thinking of that. It's either go to the doctor, probably be messed about but get it done for free, or go to a specialist and pay to get it done properly. :scared:

Minimalise hard contact with the toes as that can cause a big problem. I've got one (not that bad but it hurts at times) , mine was caused by inside edging a cricket ball (solid object) onto my toe.

Toes are delicate things, look after 'em.

Like I said earlier, I've had all four sides of both big toes burned. I went to the podiatrist, they stuck the needle in my toe to numb it and came back 10 minutes later. He poked me with a pin and asked me if I could feel it. I said yes so I got another needle in my toe. Repeat. It's not the needle that hurts, it's the fluid in the needle going into your toes that hurts. After they were finally free of all feeling, he cut the sides of the nail away, cleaned the nail bed with a long Q-tip and then burned the nail bed with another Q-tip. Repeat for the three other sides and we were done. Again, 13 years later, I still have had no issues with them coming back. I highly suggest it to anyone. Dealing with a little stinging for a few days instead of constant or recurring pain sounds much better to me.
