It is more than enough time to compare the way people live vs the way people think they live. There are many people from foreign countries that believe all americans are happy, have a cellphone, 2 cars, a dog, and 2 kids. Culture studies looks at exactly that, the culture and people as a whole, not just individual cases of those that like it, but those that dont, those in poverty, and those that are trying to change the way they live. You cant base your opinion of their entire society on just one generation either, for it is made up of 3. I'm sure there are many aspects of Japanese culture that you would not like, but of course, not many people hear about them, because its not advertised or shown to the general public. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Its the same way with America, the UK, Germany, and just about every foreign country. Its also often the opposite, where they only highlight the bad. I lived in Saudi Arabia from 1988-1992 during the Gulf War. Living in the middle east is not as bad as people make it out to be, its just different. Much the same way living in Japan isnt the most amazing thing in the world...its just different. For many of our youth however, that's exactly what theyre looking for...something different, and that I can understand. Just dont take what you see at face value.
