Ok, thank you for clearing that up. Followup question...have any of these Otakus ever even been to Japan? Its an experience I suppose, but it really isnt all that amazing. They work you to death in school and its extremely competitive, and in the end, when you get this amazing job, it doesnt pay crap cuz there are tons of other people to take your place. Japan = not that amazing of a place.

ummmm...that isn't the definition for otaku actually -.-....if I remeber CORRECTLY,it should mean ----

Otaku - fanboy/fangirl of anime or manga..or maybe even a particular Japanese culture or something of the sort

so,there COULD probably be american "otakus",but they wouldn't refer to themselves as that..they would just call themself a fan or something,rather than using the term most Japanese would use..otaku (sorry ^.^;;..didn't mean to say MOST..I guess it's just people like me,hehe)

P.S. sorry,just read your post bob and hate to break it to you,but I can't let you get away with saying,"Japan = not that great of a place" (or..whatever you put >_>) sooooo...it's time I say something.Yes,you're right,they DO work you to death and you have to go to school for a loooong time..much longer than in america.Well,it's not really MUCH longer,but you do have to go about 3 to 4 hours more and you night school (referring to night as about 5:30) so you have to come back to school and go for about 1 or 2 more hours.But anyways...if you saw the magnificent scenery in Japan,you would probably think twice before saying there's nothing great about it.Because Japan has some VERY beautiful land...even the cities that you visit will have very interesting people and buildings to see.When the sun rises in the morning,that can be a very beautiful experience as well...wow,now you wonder why the call it "Land of the Rising Sun" ^.^.Well,I'm just saying that Japan IS a very great place...maybe not in others opinons,but mine it is =D

I have been to japan, and yes, the scenery is nice, but the scenery doesnt make a country great. I 'lived' in Japan for a month during a culture studies class, and it wasnt all that it is cut out to be.

*sighs* I hate to continue this,buuuut.....I know the scenery isn't all that makes a country..it's their culture,the type of people that live there,and the environment you have to live in (such as crime,schoolings,and just walking outside and such).I mean,I know a lot of funny guys from Japan,they've told me how beautiful of a place it is and how everybody is more active,or more energetic over there than in america.Japan is just a fun place altogether ^.^.I suppose it wouldn't have been too much fun for you though if you just went there for a culture studies class...if you were going there for a vacation and actually took the time to see as much as you could..then you would have enjoyed it more,trust me =D.Oh,and besides....for only "living" there a month...that's not much time to create an opinon about a country,don't ya think? ^.~

It is more than enough time to compare the way people live vs the way people think they live. There are many people from foreign countries that believe all americans are happy, have a cellphone, 2 cars, a dog, and 2 kids. Culture studies looks at exactly that, the culture and people as a whole, not just individual cases of those that like it, but those that dont, those in poverty, and those that are trying to change the way they live. You cant base your opinion of their entire society on just one generation either, for it is made up of 3. I'm sure there are many aspects of Japanese culture that you would not like, but of course, not many people hear about them, because its not advertised or shown to the general public. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Its the same way with America, the UK, Germany, and just about every foreign country. Its also often the opposite, where they only highlight the bad. I lived in Saudi Arabia from 1988-1992 during the Gulf War. Living in the middle east is not as bad as people make it out to be, its just different. Much the same way living in Japan isnt the most amazing thing in the world...its just different. For many of our youth however, that's exactly what theyre looking for...something different, and that I can understand. Just dont take what you see at face value.

otaku = Western person who wishes they were Japanese, and thinks everything Japanese is by definition wonderful, just because it's Japanese.

It's kind of an extension of the syndrome that makes it possible for every foreign exchange student to get laid, regardless of actual desirability.

Actually neon duke you are a otaku!(guessing) The definition is not only for japanese only. it describes how any one is a fan or diehard fan of anything.

You are a fan of motorsports and cars, correct? Then you are an Otaku!(maybe, as it depends how much your into the subject)

Wow! An entire year gone by and still no change in your incomprehensibly poor writing skills. How can it be that somebody shows absolutely no improvement in an entire year?

It all goes with the mad drift0r attitude M5...someday ull get, it'. But yeah, I suppose that's our wonderful school system doing it's job.

'It's' job?

It's = it is
Its = its

:)

And yes - I don't blame the school system, but rather his own complete incompetence. It scares the hell out of me that people like this exist anywhere, particularly in my country which is supposed to be such a major superpower. He's one of those people that can't find Oregon on a blank US map.

well excuse me for saying anything at you Mr.English teacher M5Power >_<...oh wait..that's right,I wasn't talking to you =P.Well,anyways,don't say anything about the way I type,because it's none of your concern.I can type however I want to,so -.-.

Wow, if you live in America, you should learn English. Otherwise, I really don't care. Confuse employers in some other country with an unintelligible resumé. Definitely don't apply to me.

ahh,it doesn't really bother me how I type..cause on the internet,I can be carefree and type or spell however I want to,but when I'm in my classes,I don't spell or write anything the way I type it online..so...it's all different really,or...something like that o_O

ahhh,I don't really care if people think it's scary.I mean,it's obvious people are gonna think it's scary,but..it's not like "Oh how I love to whack off to looking at yaoi!" -.-...please excuse the language,but I don't like it like that,I just find it to be an art..but it's really hard to explain,because the people that know what yaoi is are just gonna say,"it's not art!Two guys are ***king for crying out loud!".Well....I don't feel that way..I feel about it this way..no matter what gender you are,love can't be determined,well....set as a boundary just because of that.Guys have feelings too,and so do girls...if those feelings are built up for someone of the same sex as you...ummm....okay?It'd be the same as a heterosexual relationship really...there's nothing different about it.But...*sighs softly* sorry if I was sounding stupid for saying this,but this is just the way I feel about liking Shounen-Ai and Yaoi...they're lovers,not **ck partners -.-.
