Robin.
Manufacturers have been bending the truth massively with mega pixel figures recently because they know most people are pretty ignorant and think more equals better when really it just means more of the poor quality your capturing.

My old K750i has a 2 mega pixel camera but the optics are so damn superior that the pictures are amazing and still will beat today's iPhone offerings which still seem to produce the worse pictures out of everything it its class. Apple seem to be pretty bad with cameras.

I guess we will have to see what happens when its released. The shares in most of the components suppliers fell today on the underwhelming news.

Ya every phone and camera has such high megapixel numbers but I haven't seen improved quality. Apple seem to be pushing more into cameras tho. The new iPod touch has a little hole at the bottom and a camera strap so to physically change your product design just for camera users I would assume the quality of the camera itself will be much improved too.

Do you guys have massive hands or something? Anything wider than an iPhone is just too bulky and feels like I have a brick in my pocket. In a world where all electronic devices are getting smaller, it perplexes me why phones are getting larger. I mean do people really watch movies on their phones?

Mine are relatively small. The bigger phones tend to be quite thin, so they're not terrible in the pocket. They're not the greatest thing to use one-handed, but I'm not a sociopath, so I don't text while driving, which means that I rarely encounter situations where I can't use two hands to hold my phone. A bigger screen means a much more useable keyboard, and it means bigger text, which is nice 'cause my eyes aren't getting any better.

Then do you guys have big pockets or something? I have a Blackberry Torch at work and when I carry it around it feels huge in my pocket and is kind of bulky. I typically just end up throwing it in my lab coat and then forgetting it when I take it off.

I don't have a problem looking at anything or typing on the iPhone and I use the vertical keyboard for everything as well. I guess my hope is that one phone manufacture will continue making a smaller phone. If the iPhone gets any bigger I wouldn't want it and it's pushing the boundaries already.

On a completely different note it makes me laugh when all this people go on some hate filled rant about the iPhone and how it doesn't offer anything new to the market. Good news everyone! You have many other option to choose from.

Mention the world "Apple" on the internet and you're basically guaranteed to have several people completely lose their sh- on you. It's kind of unbelievable. Doesn't even matter what you say, you could be like "Apple's not that great" and somebody would be like "OMG F U I DARE YOU TO PUT YORU PRECIOUS IMAC AGAINST MY HARDCORE GAMING PC." (This actually happened to me recently!) It's like they look for key words and then just flip out when they see one.

My biggest problem with the 5 is that it's just too much like the 4 I'm currently using. I want to be excited about getting a cool new phone. I don't get that with the new iPhone.

This sums up how I feel:

http://www.manolith.com/2012/09/12/the-iphone-5-is-the-most-disappointing-iphone-ever/

As for Android phones being big, my One X fits in to everything perfectly. My pockets, my hands, and the 'pockets' in my car. I can still do everything with one hand and the screen is 4.7" with a fantastic resolution. Why would I want something smaller, Apple?

The One X is the masterphone In my opinion. Bloody beautiful piece of equipment.

However, When I see the screen-size of this I know I can never use it, the Galaxy Note has made my expectation from phones too much.

This. The 4 is already a big enough brick in my pocket. Some of the Droids my friends have are big as a first-gen Xbox. The extra length isn't really a bother, it's the width.

Then there's the fact that 16:9 is basically a worldwide HD standard which has now also taken over the world of computer monitors. It literally makes no sense to have any screen on any device any aspect ratio other than 16:9. Scalability son, scalability.

My two cents, as someone who went Nokia E75 - iPhone 3GS - Samsung Galaxy SII, I hate to say it because I'm kinda anti-apple, I think this is the best phone on the market.

Look, when I was using Apple, I was the biggest whiner regarding iOS, I jailbroke my phone to let it do several things I thought was just reasonable for it to do, ect, and I always imagined that Android would be this whole better world. It's, a little better in some ways and a little worse in others, but ultimately for Windows users, there's no extreme plus point to having an Android over an iOS, atleast once you jailbrake your iPhone. And this whole software update thing, its a bloody dog's breakfast, don't any other Android users disagree with me, I mean Apple's is Apple - You, Android's is Google - Manufacturer - Carrier - You, and its a nightmare.

I still won't buy an Apply computer, but come contract's end, I may seriously buy an Apple phone, and if I were using a Galaxy S off contract, I might be on pre-order for this phone. On the other hand, 4S/SII users, while this phone is superior, its not that big of a jump, anyone with anything better than an iPhone 4 I wouldn't bother with it.

You guys have small hands or small pockets. I have a 4.7" One XL and it pockets fine, it's not bulky, and I can use it one handed. Even my GF doesn't find her 4.5" HTC too big.

16:9 is good for video viewing but not the best ratio for touch input, as the natural arc of your thumbs can't optimally cover all the areas in landscape mode as the screen size grows.

I don't really get the pocket thing unless you wear super tight skinny jeans or something. I wear normal fit jeans all the time, and I just tried an original Galaxy Note and it fit in my pocket fine. That's even with the little block stuck to the back that the security cable is attached to. If that'll fit, I don't see how a smaller phone would be an issue. The iPhone4 is a pretty thick phone, especially in a case, and I feel like mine fits my pocket less well than the Note did.

Unless you ever want to do anything other than watch video or maybe play games. It's a horrible aspect ratio for computer monitors because you're wasting a huge amount of horizontal space while reducing vertical space. Nothing fits right on it. Terrible for viewing and editing photos, terrible for word processing, terrible for web browsing, basically everything.

On a phone, 16:9 is too narrow to type and view content when held vertically, and not tall enough when held horizontally, so the keyboard covers almost the whole screen, and images are either tiny or cut off.

I was just talking to a friend who's a professional UI designer, and he was mentioning how much everybody in his industry thinks 16:9 is a total joke and hates developing for it. It's been a major contributor to the lack of professional development for Android compared to iPhone, because it's much harder to make a good touch interface in 16:9, and they're all pissed at Apple for going to the new aspect ratio.

I think part of the problem is I wear scrubs most days which only has 2 pockets and they aren't that big. But even in jeans or dress pants, I don't wear anything tight or considered skinny but I still feel like I have something way to big in my pocket.

Not impressed at all. Besides faster processer and bigger screen, nothing else. Well except 4G. But that's it.. and the Iphone 4s is already gonna get an update.
I think my buddy summed up people like you quite well.
That's because some people don't understand what goes into making the device 18% thinner, 20% smaller, while adding new technologies like LTE compatible chips, 150mbps wireless cards, improving the quality of a camera (understanding that making cameras smaller or thinner typically drastically reduces the quality). As an overall package, all of the subtle changes come together in a big way. The reason it's not some insanely drastic change is because they already have a good design going. You don't want to fix what isn't broken. You just want to improve on it.

My phone doesn't feel cheap and plastic at all, it feels rock solid. As for being user friendly, every person I know who found touch screen phones confusing was able to use my old Galaxy S without a problem. It's very very similar to the iPhone interface (so much so Apple decided to sue them) as there's only so much you can do with a touch screen.
That's because the iPhone interface is the easiest to use, hence why anybody who can't figure out a touch screen found the one phone that copied it easy to use as well.

That doesn't disregard that the iPhone interface is still miles more friendly to pick up & use than the Android.
Also, the battery life thing is a myth; unless you run a heap of unlocked apps it won't make enough difference to be noticeable in day to day use. People who are rooting their phones and changing every last thing aren't using the device as it was intended; of course it's going to affect the handset. It's like overclocking a computer with standard cooling!
Then what I said isn't a myth is it? Custom a droid interface enough, the battery takes a huge toll.

I've never really bothered to watch any Android announcements myself. I just let my phone update when it needs to and be done with it. Texting while watching a video would be very very useful for me though, I'm not sure how that kind of added ability is stupid. It's certainly more useful than shouting about a panorama mode when there are third party apps on the App Store that can already do it.
Why do you need to watch a video on your phone if you're trying to have a conversation with someone? There's multi-tasking on a phone & then there's just being silly.

They usually match it though. Remember the Retina display? What about Siri? Groundbreaking features that nobody could match that justified the higher price tag and the hype. This time round we got nothing at all to be excited about and yet the price remains high.
Read the quote I posted above.

All people have done is ignore where the real changes were made because they don't the slightest clue what any of that does to improve the phone. They just want more features they can play with.
It's by no means a bad handset. The design of the thing is sheer brilliance and I'm sure the construction will be superb as will the interface but it just feels like a bit of a let down to me.
That was sarcasm if you didn't bother to delete the first part of it.

Unless you are the new governing authority on what people are allowed to do on their phones, I am not sure why this is being silly?

But don't you see? Everyday people that don't focus on all the hard work put in to it, they just focus on big things like megapixels, screen, fast when it comes to the phone itself, more features. Its just what people want.
Don't get me wrong, I love Iphones, its just I like Androids better because of the wide selection. And I know that Apple is its only working company(meaning it doesn't have multiple companies that work for a big company), but I feel they need to just make a big breakout. I know if it's not broken don't fix it, but just people don't like to see the same old stuff. It's just the way the world works. Yeah, keep it the same for a while, but you have to change it up once in a while.

Screen size in vertical typing won't matter it's not awkward and I can hold it in one hand. All these big phones seem like I wouldn't be able to use one hand to click anywhere on the screen or it would be awkward to have to stretch. Now keyboard in horizontal mode does suck. A lot of the time you can't see anything however but a couple mm won't make a crazy big difference anyway like max an extra two lines of text can be read. I like typing on the vertical keyboard anyway since its so fast. The extra height is just gonna make YouTube videos a bit better to watch but still not biggest deal. I wanna see this new maps and gps. The turn by turn that speaks and shows little signs just like a normal highway sign looks pretty nice. I think with everything it will come down to apps. More screen and internal stuff allows more powerful apps. I think games will be super awesome and amazing on this new iPhone and apple seems to be pushing into the game world hard.

Next year: Apple console, better then PS4 and xBox720..

But seriously, after reading through a article about how good it is, and how bad it is, I think it's better then a Android.

I've had Andriods, never liked them. Don't like widgets either. I suppose I just like how Apple have there tech laid out.

Anyway, it's better, stronger, faster and longer..

I feel a song coming on.. (I know that's not the proper lyrics btw) :dopey:

It doesn't make sense. That's why it's silly.

Thanks for your opinion on what is silly or not silly. There are people who do not think its silly, so why limit their options based on your opinion?

That would be the Apple Pi? I'd like a slice of that.
More to the point -will there be a 5S, and is it better to wait for that?

McLaren, bergauk - I can see where you are coming from - though maybe the word you need is 'incomprehensible' rather than 'silly'. There is a young lady who visits our home that watches music videos on her phone - but is constantly texting, too. More than multi-tasking, I would call it attention-hopping.

It doesn't make sense. That's why it's silly.

I'd use it all the time; it's not that silly! I don't text a huge amount but I watch videos on my lunch break at work and if my girlfriend sends me a text it would be really useful to be able to reply without interrupting the video. I don't think my phone has it though :(

Well just ordered a new iPhone5 in black 32gb in a 24 month contract, unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 2gb of data with free tethering. For same price I'm paying now. Hopefully will be here for next Friday.

It'd probably be smart to wait, because who knows what improvements they'll do for the 5S. However, the more I look at the iPhone 5 the more I feel like I have to pre-order it!

TheCracker
But by then why not just wait for the iPhone 6?
Yeah, it's better to get the 5 now and then wait for the 6. It's funnier to get a new model instead of a slightly upgraded old one I think. :)

My contract runs out on December 19th so I shall be getting myself this a Christmas present. Anyone got a rough idea when the latest you could get one would be? I don't want to spend more than a week or two without two phones. It will probably be either a black 32 or 64GB one. I know nobody can answer this but it would help if you had an estimate!
Cheers!

If you went and got one then, I'd say about 3 weeks? Possibly because Christmas.

Can I ask where you live and how much that will cost a month. I'm in Canada and we don't have unlimited plans and the best plans ever that would come close are laughably high.

Lol of course it would be "smarter" to wait for the 5S but than when it comes out you'll say I should just get the 6 cause it will be better than after that wait for 6S. They are just gonna get better each year so waiting for the next one I'd do only if you have a phone now and was debating upgrading. Also yes I was using my 3GS last night and even tho I know the 5 is exact same OS and I would notice no difference I still can't wait to get it lol.

The latest you could get one? It comes out September 21 so just walk in and ask for one after that. If you set up a new contract or use your existing one they will either say here is the phone this second or wait a week but use your existing phone on the new contract for now.

Is it me, or does the iPhone 5 look slightly unusual because of the taller, but not wider screen?

I know what you mean. But when you're used to something (like the 3.5" screen), you expect to see it, so when it's change it always takes a little while to get used to. Like when I redecorated my bedroom. I was used to it with green walls, so the grey walls looked a bit unusual to begin with. Now they look normal.

There's these two things you may have come across. Long journeys by train and friends. It makes the journey a lot easier than either stopping the movie or waiting for replies while you stare at blurry trees.

But iPhones don't do it, so it must be silly

I mean it's not like anyone chats on FB/MSN chat while watching TV.
