iPhone has been announced.

Too me,releasing the iPhone seems logical-after all, there are many cell phones out in the market that are capable of playing music(eg.Walkman series from Sony Ericsson)-why not get a piece of that market too?

Hmm, touch screens.

I'm still not convinced that they are practical. Not only is it fairly inaccurate it'll also lead to loads of cleaning of the screen. And having no stylus will just increase the grubbiness.

It does indeed look good and offer plenty of options, but it's certainly not going to be as popular as a nano with the youth culture with what works out as a £300 phone.

I'm waiting for the 120gb Iphone I have a mobile and a ipod but combining them to work with itunes seem like a match made in heaven, also updating your songs over Bluetooth or wifi seem the way it needs to go too.

That looks good. Shame it's not on sale now, really. Well no, since my phone and pda are still alive. And I wouldn't be able to afford one. And it's kinda impractical. But you get what I mean.

I'm a little apprehensive on the touchscreen and battery life, but this may end up being a great prospect for my next phone. 👍

I don't know if I want to give up my N93 for this. The 3 MP camera on the N93 can't be beat and that's what I use most on my phone.

Plus, for $599, you can buy a PS3... :indiff:

Oh gawd I’m going to wet the carpet…

It will come down though – Apple obviously just wants to take advantage of rich early-adopters (the original 5GB iPod was $499, if I remember correctly).

Plus, for $599, you can buy a Mac Mini.

How cool is that thing!

In the near-future, we should have a camera/movie/mp3/camcorder/calendar/flashlight/stopwatch/gaming/internet/harddrive/walkie-talkie phone with the most important feature still being the alarm clock.

I can't wait until our cel phones are capable of all that!

Do you think that Apple intend to go it alone in the mobile phone market? I can't see Apple marketing the iPhone like Nokia or LG - i.e. making the iPhone available as a handset for any old Tom, Dick or Harry network to coin it in on the backs of Apple's technical innovation? Will this mean that if you want an iPhone, you'll have to ditch your current network?? Still, it's a gorgeous looking piece of kit 👍

It’s only available with Cingular, because they had to collaborate with them for the Visual Voicemail (click on the “Voicemail” picture).

I think it'll be the same deal as the Orange SPVs we get over here. Primarily made for Orange, but about 2 months after their release someone manages to unlock them. I bought one and used it on O2 with no problems, aside from the fact that O2 didn't have the GPRS settings for it. If it comes over here, my prediction is that Vodafone will get it. O2 have the XDAs, Orange have the SPVs, T Mobile have Blackberries, but to my knowledge Vodafone aren't using anything. That and they're one of the richer network operators.

Does anyone know how much storage it has for music? I would imagine atleast a few gigs. With this phone, has Apple made the iPod obsolete? I still want an 80gig video.

I wouldn't say obsolete as the iPod is less expensive, and many people don't need smart phones, and get their phones for free when they renew or change cell providers.

Even those that do, I suspect some may still want to use the iPod, especially the Nano as it is so small, and convenient, and has a much longer battery life.

Instead of making the iPod obsolete, I think Apple has very wisely expanded on a brilliant product line of portable media devices that will appeal to a very large market.

With Apples wise move to Intel processing, the brilliant design and marketing of iPod and iTunes, and now iPhone and Apple TV... this could easily be the best year ever for Apple with several more years of market growth and increasing profit potential.

Once all the hype of Apple's announcements at MacWorld begin to settle down and day traders move onto the next hot stock, such that Apple's stock trades level off, and once the SEC's investigation of Apple's apparent practice of back dating Steve Jobs' stock options is resolved, I'm definitely going to be beefing up my portfolio with Apple shares! 👍 👍

If it comes over here, my prediction is that Vodafone will get it.

That will come down to the eventual decision if Apple will sell them without any kind of service lock, an idea that is becoming more popular these days. Given that in America Vodaphone is represented by Verizon, would you not have the Motorola Q over there? Cingular here in America is owned by AT&T, despite the fact that Vodaphone almost bought it a few years back.

It would be very disappointing if Apple only sells the iPone through Cingular. Although their service quality has increased a lot in the past few years, I really don't want to have to switch services again just to get one of these. I'm pretty happy with NEXTEL, but I have considered a split off to Sprint or Cingular in the past. I believe my contract is up in March, and if that is the case, I may sign a multi-year deal with Cingular to get one of these at a discount. We'll see what happens, but I would expect to see Cingular's service exploding just for the use of this phone...

If you're in europe, Cingular's GSM network will work anyway.
