recently renewed my iracing account, just wondering if i buy a track can i practice on it freely? or does it have to be part of an ongoing series (in the schedule)? i will be driving at Mid Ohio later this year and would like to learn the layout via iRacing first.

If you click on the green "race now" button it changes between open practice and the race series. You can then pick any track, car combo you own to use in private practice.

Actually, the rain is a lot more down to the setup than a lot of people think. Once you get to the top drivers in F1 (Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel, Raikkonen), that level, Rain or Dry they are all pretty much the same speed. Depending on how much rain is coming down and how many puddles there are ect, will make a huge difference on how a engineer and driver want to setup the car, and will make a huge difference in how fast the car can go in those conditions.

Here's a good example. In Karting we run a Pre Final and a Final. Your driving won't really change all that much within those two races. We had very similar heavy rain conditions in both races. My father and I didn't have enough time to switch to a full rain setup and had to go with a intermediate setup for the Prefinal. I really struggled the whole race and fell from 2nd on the grid to 14th. Final comes around with the same conditions, only thing that changed was that we fitted a full rain setup to the car, I win the race from 14th and ran 2 seconds a lap faster lap times, than in the pre final, where other drivers were actually slightly slower due to tyre wear.

Nice real life example. I didn't know setup was THAT important in the rain.

Don't trust your reference points from iRacing to be true in real life, when you end up at Mid-Ohio. Otherwise, good luck!

It will be nice to have a rough idea though, much better than looking at the top-down layout, i'm going to find my real life limits once i get there.

Congrats Mac on your racing career so far. I have raced you a few times and your a good clean racer.
I found it interesting with the reaction of the Monday V8 Supercar race last week at VIR with some of the conduct between some Star drivers both on iRacing and Real life. I personally think that there was some dirty racing but at the end of the day its racing and its the responsibility for the drivers to behave themselves. Yes it was embarassing and does bring the series into disrepute and the associated stakeholder (V8sonline who do a surpurb job,the teams and the driver). If you have not seen it go to Youtube, type in V8sonline and find the VIR race.

Agreed. Was extremely poor and the team managers of the big teams in the series have already had a meeting about how to prevent this from happening in the future. So there may be some very big changes to the series soon...

It doesn't really make V8sonline look bad, just makes the series look extremely unprofessional and ruins the drivers, teams and sponsors reputations of the parties involved. Anyway, hopefully we don't see it again...

That tool on pole position that forgot to pull 1st gear didn't help the cause either... :dopey: :D

I absolutely love the v8sonline coverage. Who does the commentating? Those guys are brilliant. They get so excited sometimes. Makes the coverage that much more enjoyable to watch.

Yeah they do a fantastic job! I'd even say the commentary team is the best in sim racing. The excitement from the commentators makes the race.

V8sonline Team:
Sebastian Murray-Wesberg (Director - controls cams etc)
Jay Kennedy (Commentator, Monday night V8s)
Stephen "Sandman" Clarke (Commentator, monday V8s)
Corey Slade (Commentator, monday v8s/thursday Grand Am)
Daniel Briant (Commentator, everything when needed...)
John Emerson (Commentator sometimes when needed)
Matthew Hill (Grand Am Thursday nights Commentator)
Madison Down (Me... Grand Am Thursday nights fill in commentator)

For those that haven't seen the broadcasts...This is the highlights from last season's V8 series and also a broadcast with myself and Matthew Hill commentating (Grand Am).

100% And its not as if they are bad drivers, you and the top split are probably some of the best drivers in iRacing without question. To hall those cars around tracks at those speed are intence. I am quite interested in the V8s but time is the problem which i don't have (YR 11, 12 hsc). The race on monday was quite entertaining.

The V8sOnline are up there with Glacier and ETV with their broadcasts. Good blokes to race with as well.

Alot of the contact in the V8 series is due to the car. The car can take some rubbing and contact as long as the wheels don't get hit. Its also due to the fact that it is a standing start. Makes things much more tighter for a few laps than a rolling start. Not to mention, these guys are usually only separated by 1.5 to 2 seconds from front of grid to the rear. Could be a little more or a little less depending on track length.

I predict this weekends race is going to be a crackin race. The classic layout at Watkins isn't all that hard or technical so its going to be close all through the grid. Especially with all the drafting potential this layout offers. Right now, I'm about .9 seconds off of the top time which shows that this layout isn't all that hard. Not trying to downplay my skill, I just know where I stand against these guys which is at best a field filler in top split. Still alot of fast guys to lay down laps, but I suspect I'll be within 1.2 seconds of the front which is really good for me. I was 2 seconds off the pace at Sonoma which still isn't all that bad considering its a very technical circuit.

Really looking in to that series. Since my normal series (Classic Lotus, Grand Am and GT Challenge) seem to run on the same track as each other every week.

Just as soon as I can get consistent in the V8 I'll try a race. Very hard to drive, best at VIR was ~10 secs off, Sonoma I was able for 17/18's. so yeah, I'm slow in the car but its so satisfying to clock a good lap in the car.

You should try Watkins Glen this week. Very easy layout to learn the V8 on. The baseline set is actually pretty good. Remember though, the tire pressures for the baseline set are set up for qualifying runs. During races and long runs you will want to lower them to keep the tires cooler. Once the tires heat up in the V8, all it likes to do is slide around.

The way I've learned the car is to just run laps on the baseline. Once I was consistent on the baseline, I started fiddling with things. Check out the setup/driving tips thread in the V8 forum. I can't stress enough though, that there is no replacement for just running laps and getting the feel of the car. Once you start to get a feel for it and understand what the car is doing, its very fun and rewarding.

One thing I love about V8 is that even the best V8 drivers make mistakes during the races. It requires your full attention at all times and will bite with just a slight lapse in concentration.

I would SKID but I would rather not be tied to certain times and I have Gt5 races then.

I'll just hop in practices as usual for a while, and see how I do, could find a hosted race too . Also, all I've ever run in the V8 is baseline since I heard it's decent almost everywhere and I have no idea where to start on setups in general.

EDIT: Did a practice @ Watkins Glen there, hit a 1:10.8 full fuel, 1:10.4 low fuel. Any good?

Here's my VIR lap:

I understand, I have also only found the time to run one of the Euro V8's this season as well, I am hoping to run more next season and I was planning on running Sonoma last week until my pedals broke.

As for the times, I have never run VIR, but your Watkins Glen time seems pretty decent considering it's the baseline setup, from what I remember anyway. :)

Baseline setup is very good. Uses all the "exploits" available. Such as the High Rake, low cambers and low caster. It's all there which is the reason why it's so good.

I did a tweaked version of the baseline setup for Road Atlanta. Actually ended up being the setup I used that week!

I just signed up for iRacing. Been playing GTR2 and rFactor for a few months now and I prepared to make the huge step up. Where's a good place to start?

@plate88 took your advice, did a load of laps. Got some good times.
BASELINE:
1:10.8 full fuel
1:10.4 low fuel
TWEAKED:
1:10.5 full fuel
1:10.077 low fuel.

May actually do a race this week. For anyone interested I just took 1 click off the rear right & left Rebound and Bump stiffness.

Doesn't seem to hard to continually lap either, really looking forward to a race.

@nostuner For rookie you will have what you need. For road side I would probably recommend going to the Kia and Cadilac races as there probably the easiest to control due to tyres. Sure somebody will correct me there though. For oval I would go Late Model. Lots of fun and easy to control.

Not too bad for a new V8 driver. I'm at a best of 1.08.8xx right now. Thats with a fair bit of tweaking on the baseline and low fuel. I have an optimal of 1.08.3xx, but I have trouble getting to my optimal in the V8. Top time I saw yesterday was a 1.07.9xx, but many of the top drivers still have yet to post times. Where you at Mad? I predict mid 1.07's will be the fastest. Maybe a bit lower with the draft.

The V8 really is a great car. Many don't give it the time it needs to properly learn how to drive it. It's the only car so far where it doesn't matter where I'm at on the grid, I have lots of fun with it.

Well, depending on if you are an oval guy or a road course guy... The Legend would be for Ovals and the Miata will be for Road Course. Practice Practice Practice until you can run consistent laps without driving off the course. The amount of times that you crash or drive off the track can and will hurt you so, keep it to a minimum. And most importantly, have fun.

You can't start in the Legend, you need Rookie 3.0 for it. You will have to start with Street Stock Series to gain safty rating enough to get into the Legend.

And here is a nice way the guy asking can figure it out himself ;)
