I'm willing to get the Skippy, seeing what you guys have been saying about it. But from what I've seen I have to have a D licence to race it, right?
Yup.

I wish my spotter would tell me I only have 2 gallons of fuel on board before the 24 lap race starts...

That could be useful, I've seen some people having to pit just to refuel because they forgot to change it after the qualify.

Don't think its been mentioned much but just like to mention how fun and awesome it is to also watch top racers go at it. Feel free to spectate some top splits and just be blown away. Watched the top V8 guys yesterday race for voer 30 mins and it was awesome...graet live chat, nice snack in hand, control over the views, good to watch the technique...awesome...

I might actually do that. 👍

I just caught a late night skippy race with only one split and some killer drivers, including Peter Kuhn whose lap videos I often mimic. Somehow I was able to hang for three other racers with over double my iRating for all 18 laps at Mid Ohio. The top two took each other in the last corner of the last lap and I was promoted to second. :boggled:

That was my third race of the night and the first of which I didn't crash out. God this car is punishing sometimes. If it was still running the original NTM I'd be in for a world of pain on this track.

Its still a pain haha.

Just remember when watching vids to press spacebar to make it full screen :)

What was your average time for the track? I am going to start tracking my Skip progress.

Day 1. Mid Ohio
First time with the track, still a very big Skip newbie
1.45.xxx
Thoughts:
Very good track if you learn it so you can avoid the elevation change confusion. In this track I am deliberately locking my wheels on the straight before a turn and braking quite late. There is plenty of room on this track to do that I feel. Its not a momentum track compared to Okayama. Brake hard and late, turn in, hit apex, full throttle for some nice speeds in the straight.

Once I get comfortable, I'll check out some videos to see if my above strategy is wrong or right

:)

My aim is to get 1.40.xxx or 1.41.xxx on this track. This seems to be the good time to get top 5 finish.

I would like it if they would permit "non-iracers" to be spotters. My father lives across the ocean and doesn't care to drive in iracing, but he would enjoy spotting for me in my races. Getting a full membership for him just for this is too expensive. Maybe if they would allow a "supplemental" membership for each member that could facilitate this addition.

Lol, that's lame.

I prefer having a good fight for 5th place than winning in a weak grid. The racing experience is much better IMO.

For those of you trying to improve your times on the Skippy, another tip that might help is to change gears a bit under 6.000 RPM. The only gear in which I go over that is 4th. Also, try to be as gentle as possible on the brakes, otherwise your tires will heat up pretty quickly and the car will be even more slippery.

Interesting tip about rpm. I will have to try

I read from other skip guys it's 6100 to 6200. It's in the tips section for new skip drivers.

Sandbox. You should go have a look in the iracing forums. Those vids and tips are very good.

Maybe it has gotten better since ive last checked but when I was a nub 1st learning the Skippy they helped me a little... Maybe they've put up some new stuff tho by now.

After about two hours of practice, watching replays, and three races, I'm typically hitting high 37's. Many are running mid 36's and even 35's, so I still have a lot to learn. Replays really, really help.

nice. I don't have much time to play games so I can't watch vids. I probably have about 30mins to play daily :) I am more of a hobbyist.

Good news. Can do Mid Ohio without any incidents now averaging 1.43.xxx - PB is now 1.40.xxx. With the SKip I figure its better to go a bit slower rather than pushing it to the limits, a good clean race vs pushing the limits with 2 or 3 incidents....you rather the clean race!

Starting to do tt's to get in the focus mode to make sure I don't do any incidents. I hope to run a few races by end of this week or preferably, on the weekend when more racers of my level are on! Pretty pleased with this...2 days and I have gone from a slippery eel to now a slow sloth..I also figured out some players where I can cut my time. I figure if I can average 1.41's without any incidents I should be in a good position to be top 5 atleast.

Think I might have to quit iRacing for a little while. We've been having major problems with our internet service and they don't think they will be able to fix it for a long time. Browsing and download speeds are fine, but latency (ping/lag) is terrible, the best I am getting is like 500ms and it's causing a ton of unregistered laps and crashes since other people can't tell where I am. Just started a few days ago, but they say it's a permanent problem :(

I should be heading back to the US in a few months though. Until then I guess it's going to be playing around with rFactor2, GPL, and C.A.R.S.

yes!!! PB 1.39 on mid ohio, I can do 1.41 average now :D Time for racing. Pretty stoked, I think with the right split (a lower one) I can get top 5 hopefully. 3 days of work...hmm..

Is mid ohio a difficult track compared to others?

good run!!

Everyone is different, but I do not find Mid-Ohio to be a difficult track to maneuver. For myself I find Okayama, Laguna Seca, and Road Atlanta difficult tracks.

I don't even race on seca. Completely scrub it. Haha.

LOL, so I log on to race a bit.. notice a Grand Touring Race at Leguna is in 5 minutes, so join then test on track really quick.. I get 1 lap in before the race starts. So I quit the test to join the race. Get 1.6 laps in on the warm up, so have a bit over 2 full laps under my belt on the track before starting the race.

Wisely I start in the pits as I didn't want to wreck anyone cause of my slow pace. But start out and immediately gain like 5 positions from accidents / offs. Continue to get better at the track starting with a 1:47. I am able to pass a few more positions and get into 11th (started 24th). I continue pressing hard till the final couple of laps and I get within .4 of 10th place going into the final lap. Now I know where I can pass him so I Brake late into Turn 1, nail it and on his bumper on the exit. We both go accelerate out of the pits, and I start falling. WTF my car is free revving? I missed a gear on the downshift? Hit the gear again and floor it, nothing.... Go though the whole H pattern and no gears? WTF, I broke my gearbox? lol after a good 10 seconds of messing with it, I figure out the plug came loose on the bottom (dumb fanatec shifters), plug it back in and continue on... 10th place must of started going very slow cause by the end of the lap (after loosing 10s) I was within 2.1Sec of him again.. Damnit! lol... My last few laps were mid 1:45s though!

2 Off tracks and only gained .14 SR :( not bad for only 2 laps of practice, but still not my 4.0 for the Dayton Prototype series... lol

I heard a while ago that the iRacing team might be working on 24 Hour races with driver swaps and everything, is that true? If so, I think there should be a GTPlanet team to race in events like this.

Yes, it is true, and yes it will definitely happen! We might even have more than 1 team!

Yeah, i would be up for a 24hr race, would be exciting! Just count disconnects as mechanical failure and 10 minute garage repair (penalty) and the next driver continues.

I would love to do that! But i dont want to sabotage the team with this horrid internet connection. Good news is the university is having a major WiFi network upgrade. but they havent said when. They just said technicians will enter dorms unanounced lolol.

Is that promotion still around which allowed you to use only the Skippy on one track(I forget which) as sort of a demo for Iracing? Iracing looks so tempting, but I want to be sure I'll actually like it before I dump money into it:p

DO you think that iRacing will eventually develop a model for the new Dallara DW-12? Presumably they will, do you think it would be free if you already had the Dallara IndyCar? similar to what they are doing with the Daytona old track new track deal?

who knows. i hope they pick the corvette more, even though they had alot of reliability problems (i was there it was awesome at the 24 hour that is) but i would love for them to update both. and even phoenix as well. one thing that boggles my mind is how little iracing people are really out their. i dont know how they afford all of this stuff

They've already anounced it, it's gonna be an upgrade for whoever owns the Dallara.
