Nothing special, but different view of doing race-recap. Sadly I somehow missed perfect focusing with my cam, so textures are littlebit blurry. Next time I try to be more precise.

By the way... interesting to see how iRacing also has small input-lag. Now when I noticed it, I'm going to consentrate to study if I can improve my times by taking care about it. I miss too much apexes, and that small lag may be one reason perhaps. Improving my own 'prediction-code' might be one step closer to Aliens.

I don't notice any input lag whatsoever in your video. The wheel on the screen moves precisely with your hands on the wheel. The main situation I have heard of lag is when people use v-sync in the graphics options, but doesn't appear you are suffering from that.

I admit that it's very very small, and propably nothing can be done to it... but if you focus your eyes to my hands so, that you see in-sim wheel back there, it is noticeable that in-sim wheel moves some milliseconds after my moves.

Someone of my Finnish fellow-iRacers once explained to me why 120fps is 'the magicnumber' where to aim when setting graphics options. He is very deep inside of computer-stuff, and he made great post with diagrams and such about lag what we have. Example if we have 60hz lcd-screen, you could imagine that 60fps is good enough, but no... 120fps is twice as better. He made some calculations about how much car actually is more far than we see in our screens compared 60fps to 120fps. In many fast places on track it was just enough that you might lose apex if you trust to that picture what you see.

That conversation started when I was wondering why my laptimes/consistency suffered so much (0.5sec/minute) when I raised my graphics options so that my fps was just littlebit over 60 anymore. After that I unchecked all nonsense-candies and let horses run free. My approx fps is nowadays about 150.


Another question what we dont know is... is it just virtual-wheel what moves few milliseconds after my hands? Perhaps real wheels aint suffering that small lag... visual wheel only. Anyway... I have bad-habit to lose too much apexes, so this or that, I need to turn my wheel littlebit earlier. :)

Yeah, there is no doubt that having FPS above 40 or 50 makes a big difference. I use triple screens and have it locked at 71 FPS and have all eye candy on except for shadows. My rates can go much higher with less eye candy, but I honestly can't tell the difference when I go above 70 FPS (and I like eye candy). I have no idea how people drive with all their eye candy on but only with 30 or 40 FPS.

I wonder if you are right about having something like 150FPS being better than 70FPS. I never thought of a few FPS being the source of input lag or visual lag on the screen. Hmmm? Maybe I'll try running with unlocked FPS and see if it is different.

Anyway, I miss lots of apexes too, but it has only to do with my driving and not my FPS!! It is limits of my talent! ;)

The 84fps limit is designed to minimize the visibility of tearing on a 60Hz monitor.

Unless you enable vertical synch, your graphics card will draw frames and send them to the monitor with no regard to the monitor's refresh rate. As a result, your screen will typically be displaying half of one frame and half of another; the seam between them is called a 'tear'.

Some poeple (myself included) find these tears quite unpleasant to look at. They can be eliminated entirely by using vertical synch, which makes the graphics card wait until the monitor's done refreshing before going to the next frame. Unfortunately, some graphics cards have problems with this, and some people dislike the extra few milliseconds of latency this causes.

Tearing is most visible (to some at least) when the tears occur around the same place on-screen each frame. This happens when the framerate is nearly an even multiple of the display's refresh rate. 84fps is anything but an even multiple of 60fps, so it will scatter the tears around the screen, hopefully making them less visible.
 
Great, thanks for posting that. That makes sense to me now.

I will switch my FPS to 84 then, and my machine should maintain that FPS most of the time. At a few tracks in certain places, it drops down into the 50s...places like coming out of Moss at Mosport, coming out of the hairpin on the back straight at Road Atlanta, a couple spots at Road America, etc.

This still doesn't explain that having 150 FPS vs 84 FPS would reduce input lag, which is what I thought your original point was. He does mention that v-sync will create some lag.

I have those fps-drops with big fields and certain places too... with approx 150fps alone on the track, my PC still stays over 110fps when there is 20+ racers and we are doing those tough places like Moss.

I have theory about neverending discussion about 'changing grip-level between Qualify and Race-session'... if you have noticed that debate. It might be just because most peoples fps drops down when there is full grid, and that leads to situation where they miss apexes because those increasedmilliseconds of latency. It feels like changed grip-level when you miss corners just littlebit, but I think it actually is caused by those inches what you are more far than usually, what you see on your screen. It ain't needed to be much to miss inside curb and slide so wide that you cant get good exit. That was my problem too, when I tried to keep 'high-settings' and thought that 60fps is max with my 60hz screen.

I went back to that thread where my friend tells some details about fps and latencies. Here is some facts he tells: (hope it makes sense... I Google-translated it, and did some corrections)

"If the simulation is running 30 fps, it means that one image goes through machine calculation of approximately 33 ms. The image data are 34 ms old already at the stage when the picture shows on your screen. If the screen draws the image on the screen as it comes in, the bottom image is 34 ms old , and top 50 ms when the old drawing has been completed (and this is optimal). If Vsync is on, you can add to this delay a one frame, ie the delay is a total of 50 to 67 ms.

If the game runs 60 fps, single frame calculation is approx 17 ms, and without vsync-delay from 17 to 34 ms.
120 fps (in 60Hz screen) to calculate a single image takes about 8 ms. Since the screen can not be updated than only 17-ms intervals, this happens so that half of the screen image is 8 to 17 ms old and half of 17 to 25 ms old (ranging from the lower and upper range, and because sync is not perfect, the line moves all the time). The disadvantage of the picture may appear disruptive tearing, when first half of the image is different image than the second half.

240 fps in the picture is 4 parts... 4, 8, 13 and 17 ms old.

120 Hz screen (as long as the fps is more than 120), these delays can be further halved."




So in a nutshell, if you are running steady 60fps, and I'm running 120... I have half of that latency compared to you. Different thing is, if you have better 'inner prediction-code' than I have, so you can adapt to latency even without knowing it. I think this issue bothers more those guys who drive 'with their eyes' more than those guys who 'drive the game'. I'm definitely one of the first guys. I also think that to become Alien, you need to be in that second group.

I know I have too much fps, cause even my lcd-monitors latency is more than my fps now... (well actually it's 5ms, just checked... so it's not) but that's just mental thing. I like to see that I'm no where near 120fps when running, so my pc ain't struggling.


Edit: So that we could see these milliseconds in real perspective, I made some simple school-math in my head. Correct me if you find bugs... I used to be quite good in these some decades ago. :lol:
Example: Youre driving long straight with 240kmh speed, and starting to get close to your brakepoint.

240km/h = 24km in 6minutes

24km in 6minutes = 4km in 1minute

4km in 1minute = 400m in 6seconds

400m in 6seconds = 40m in 0,6seconds

40m in 0,6sec = 4m in 0,06sec

4m in 0,06sec = 2m in 0,03sec (30ms)


It's easy to see that when youre trying to hit perfectly to apex, if your car actually is two meters more far than your eyes says... it's going to be 'hit or miss' lottery everytime before your 'inner prediction code' learns these changing things. For you, the problem aint so bad than for me. You are used to steady 70fps, so youre braking two meters 'too early' because that's how you have been learned it. For me, if my fps drops to near 60-70 range, I will shoot almost something like 1meter over my usual inside-line, and then wondering what happened to grip-level. :lol:



EDIT: hmmm... I feel that I hijacked this thread with my speculations. :guilty: I dont know, but if OP feels that way too, it might be good to move these few posts to iRacing-thread. There they might be easier to those to find who also are iRacers. This thread might be better with only those great videos... though these posts started from one video, so someway they are related to topic. Your call Berkeley! :lol:

Aki, our discussion is video related so it's all good. I learned a lot from what you wrote, although I'm still trying to comprehend it all. I definitely agree with you that higher FPS is better!!! :) I'm just not sure that being able to see at 150 FPS versus 75 FPS translates into more precise driving (although it definitely does at 75 FPS versus 30 FPS). Good discussion!

I started from 12th and finished 8th... my first race with this car and not a lot of training... I couldn't do more :)

Wow, that looks like awesome racing! I love big fields of 30 drivers! :) I struggle with the V8 because it doesn't turn in very well and just seems to drift around a lot. But it is a beautiful car, sounds great and makes for some awesome racing! It looks real watching those repays!! 👍

Here are a couple laps in an InsideSimRacing Podium Assault Dallara Indycar at Sebring. Sebring is a wide open, fast and bumpy circuit, very challenging. Lap times are competitive in the iRacing Drivers World Championship.

That sounds about right. Scott Pruett who along with some other America and Indy Car stars were down under the weekend to do a V8 Supercar race at Surfer's.

He said very much the same thing, because the cars use a spool which is normal in drag racing but not in road racing where a locking diff is much more common and helps the car "turn".

It just takes getting used too I suppose.
