Is a steering wheel worth it?

To people with the G25s and or G27s. Do you guys have a ton of problems with the H-gate shifter and clutch? I've heard that if you don't shift perfectly, you'll get stuck in neutral all the time. I was debating on just getting a Fanatec Porsche GT3 RS wheel with Clubsport pedals, but its so expensive for me and I don't wanna wait until May to get one. Can you help me out?

Just bought a wheel last week, one day to learn and I got gold on AMG Intermediate full lap. :) And you'll enjoy more the game when you are just roaming around, testing things. You can't really have fun doing this with a controller.

I was lucky and found a guy on craigslist who sold me a g27 for $180, I love it but I cant use it (correctly) yet as I have nothing to mount it to. I have read good things about wheelstandpro but they are backordered so I probably wont get that for a while.

I moved my ps3 into my study for a couple days to mount it to my desk to give it a try, and I have to say it is really enjoyable especially because my thumbs seem to lack the ability to turn only a little bit.

It's about being precise. If you feel you can't shift properly you can always use the paddles it does take some time to get used to shifting with the H pattern.

But yes if you let out the clutch before you get the lever into gear you will be in neutral.

Hate to break everyones bubble, but a DS3 works fine for me.

It's up to you really but many are telling you that you are missing out on a kick butt experience... It's like playing baseball simulator with a one button joystick. It "works fine" but why would you want to?? Ever occur to you that there may be merrit in everyone saying a wheel is better?

Anyway it sounds like the original poster is quite young and will not be able to afford a G27 or Fanatec wheel from reading his comments.

You can buy a really cheap wheel second hand, one of the earlier GT3 or GT4 models will work just fine and I am sure can be had for under $50 if you look hard enough.

Is this a huge upgrade over the controller? I love the game and plan on playing it for a long time but its the only racing game I play, but in turn the DS3 gets aggravating sometimes. Opinions would be appreciated. thanks!

that is the point of GT5's simulation :P

I recommend DFGT its not very expensive you should buy it when its sale its less than $100 with tax already DFGT is great because its designed purposely for GT5 therefor you can forget about the other $300-500 and have almost the same steering simulation

Every day of the 2 years of monthly payments, everyone of the 30000 cents charged to the credit card, everyone of the 600000 pesos I ended up paying it.

I love my G27.

My car did cost 200 times more than my G25 and I have done more km in GT5 than my real car after GT5 release.. So It really is worth it :)

I'd have to say it's dependent on wether you have a good place to set it up. I own a wheel, but I'm not using it at the moment. Been playing GT5 with the controller and it's great.

Maybe I'll pop the wheel out like a year from now and start the game over, two for the price of one, you know.

dude, get yourself a G27 asap. The regular controllers suck ass!

the clutch timing takes some getting used to, i still mess up gear shifts from time to time, but the wheel also has flappy paddle gear shifters which are much more efficient..you'll never want to play with an automatic gearbox ever again.
everyone should buy one.

theres a dude above somewhere saying he prefers his controller to a wheel...lol, weirdo.
probably doesnt know how to drive a car. hes that guy you see online who's always twitching all over the road and cant hold his caar straight.

Its totally worth it! Ive been playing racing games with a controller ever since, and now that I have a steering wheel, I'm definitely not coming back. I started off with the inexpensive Logitech DFGT, I'm loving every moment of it!

Maybe someday I'll pick up a G25 or a G27, I really want a clutch and a H-shifter. A G25 is a more open idea for me because of its shifter, its an H and a sequential at the same time. But for now I really like my DFGT, it is the the official wheel for GT5, well it used to be.

YES, but sometimes it is possible for the average gamer type to be frustrated with its complexity if your'e not into realistic driving.

If u rate yourself as an average to good driver go for it.

A definite YES!

A Logitech DF-GT + Wheel stand pro = Budget user heaven.

I'd rather pry my eyeballs loose with a rusty spoon, than go back to using a DS3 for Racing...

G27 is FULL OF WIN!

Whatever that means o.O

AND ^ YEs... that's funny as hell. I do believe that your wheelstandpro is truly uniquely set up. Take it off... put it at the bottom and do it all over again, before you scare children.

Thanks for all the responses! There doesn't seem to be any negatives other than the learning curve. I will probably start out with the DFGT, I can't justify the G27 yet.

I have been using a controller since the beginning of the GT series. I just recently picked up a logitech G27 and it was definitely the right call. It took quite a bit of getting used to, but I am ever slowly getting the hang of it.

Another alternative to the WSP is the SpeedBlack stand. I got one for my wheel and I think it is a fantastic stand for the price. Build quality is decent and its pretty sturdy for how it is constructed. I haven't had any issues during quick 180* turns with the stand wanting to wobble or flip. Sure its not a playseat, but it does a good job.

Learning curve... ahhhh yes. It kinda sucks but post-learning curve... you'll be grinning from ear to ear and a MUCH better driver too.

I'd advise to run it on 'Simulation' from the start. No point in learning it's behaviour more than once IMO.

I was where you were, couldn't justify dropping $300 on a G27, but wanted the features.

Look into the Fanatec 911 wheel. It comes with a H pattern shifter and 3 pedals, and is a cheaper option then the G27. Thought its probably not quite as good as the G27 (cheaper pedals, gear driven FFB) its still over $100 cheaper (176 shipped to my door). It fills the void between the DFGT and the G27 offering great features for the price.

tissimo, does the Fanatec have paddle shifters?

One thing not mentioned allot is mounting location. If you do not have a solid, comfortable place to mount it, you will not enjoy it nor get the full effect. I bought my DFGT and tried mounting it to a folding table weighted down. Big fail. It really jerked around and I spent more time fighting the wheel then driving. I bit the bullet and bought the Playseat. The difference is astronomical. The experience is even better. Really look at how you plan to mount it before you buy. If not you will be disappointed and probably come back on here telling everyone how bad wheels are.

Big tip though guys. Steering wheels and play seats etc.. are the biggest mood killer ever. When I get a girl back I like to make sure there is a pair of drum sticks laying about and some other cool looking junk that looks 'casually' left on show. The steering wheel, street fighter joystick, guncon, flight sim stick and any other toys are in a box out of sight 👍

I'm married, so i'm done trying to impress.

Has anyone used the Thrustmaster rally GT wheel? or and Thrustmaster wheel? If so, are they comparable to Logitech?

Going from a pad to a wheel is like going from 56k dialup to full on broadband, HD porn my friend. Either way you see boobs but the latter are that little closer to seeing them in real life.

Great comment :D
And yes, a steering wheel is worth the extra cost.

I have a G27 coming on Monday. I am hoping it's as good as people say. I never had any fun at all with the MS wheel on the 360 so always preferred the controller.(Tried it on F1 2010, Forza 2&3 PGR 3&4 and TD Unlimited. Hated it on all those)

It was the H shift that made me bite the bullet. Changing down for a turn with the sequential I'd often go too far and drop into 1st and mess it up. Hopefully with the H shift I can skip gears and never forget what gear I am in.
