Ah maybe my messsage wasn't very clear. It doesn't use the hard drive at all (As claimed on another post), it still remains to run off the DVD. BTW my PS2 is a 30003 UK version with a Messiah 2 chip.

I think the key to fixing this is to remove the dual layer check, which is well beyond me.
i think in it too

im getting my import copy tommorrow. ill look into the second layer issue and get back if i can find a way to bypass it so that it will work on the HDD.

if you leave the gt4 game disc in , that should eliminate the problem with the layer check. Since swap magic 3 has a TOC refresh, u may be able to use another dual layer dvd like champions of norrath, which is over 7 gb. ill be sure to try it when i get it.

This doesn't work. I tested it with Champions of Norrath, which should work as it has tons more files too. But it only starts booting the single layer and then fails exactly where the HD also fails (i.e. opening screen, wheel calibration, dead).

There seems to be some kind of validation after the disclaimer, checking for the original disc and / or a proper double layer structure. In my opinion this check must be removed or bypassed to enable playing GT4 from HDD. I suppose the GT4.VOL files don't even need to be unpacked, it's all in the peripheral files.

^it could just be a memory card check. Most of the games I've played have the memory card check quite early on in the loading. That'd be kinda wierd if Sony/PD "asked" you if the legit version of GT was in the drive :)

Tried it, It does'nt work either! Gives you a Wrong Disc Error when trying to Convert to the HDD.....

I finally got an imported copy of chinese GT4 tonight, and I knew it won't boot directly on my US PS2, so first I make an ISO file out of the disc with DVDDecrypter on my PC, and load it on a harddisk using WinHIIP 1.6.5(Using Mode 3, refer to this list: hxxp://homepage.ntlworld.com/casey.miller/HD%20Loader%20Compatibility.htm). With my harddisk installed using Network adapter (of course), I boot up with HDLoader v9 Patched (hxxp://srlz.altervista.org/software/software.html). The game is listed there but if I try to load it directly, it will go black screen after the disclaimer, SO, here's the trick: before I choose the "Play" menu in HDLoader, I put the GT4 disc back in the PS2 and vala! The game now run, but too bad it's not off the harddisk but from the GT4 disc. I played thru B-Licence, a few cups, with GT Force and GT Force Pro, no problem seen so far.

Note: You can't directly copy the game from DVD to harddisk with WinHIIP, it will only copy the first layer (3G or so), with DVDDecrypter, you will get around 5.8G.

Note: You can get WinHIIP 1.6.5 here: (hxxp://forums.psxforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=22748)

Note: My PS2 is modded(but still unable to play import!?! I have no idea), so YMMV, but I read somewhere that it doesn't matter if you have mod chip or not if only loading installed game on harddisk.

I own GT4 Japanese and HDLoader.

Can't find a way to get it to play :(

Transfered ISO image to HD, Activated mode 3, inserted original DVD but no go :(

Any hint ?

I have a non moded v7 ps2.

My chinese copy should arrive tomorrow, it's clearing customs as I type. I read in another thread on here that you might have to use a slide card to swap the disc with the hdloader disc if your ps2 isn't modded. Everything else seems to go like trogman says. My ps2 is also unmodded so I hope this works. $88 for a coaster won't be cool. There are plenty of sites on the web with a make your own slide card template. I used the template to make my slide card and it works fine after I took my ps2 dvd drive apart to study how it worked exactly.

Right now, I don't care if it will run from the hdd, I just want it to run period without me having to by a modchip. I know that when an ISO is transfered to the hdd, that the apps all edit system.cnf so the boot is hd0 instead of cdrom0. Is there a way to edit this on the hdd to read the original cdrom0 or is the main issue here TOC refresh if using swap method and the ps2 seeing an import disc using just an eject/insert method?

I agree. Nothing new. Just same old ideas floating around that have been forever. Buy a modchip or what on your regional release. HDD not working now and probably won't for a while. Trust me, I tried everything before breaking down and buying the chip.

Not to be rude, sites showed compatibility 3 weeks ago when I tried. Those sites are full of it. The are speculating it will work with dvd5 rip because everything else has worked out that way, problem is, they can't get it ripped to dvd5. Don't let them fool you.
