Mine has been on, grinding LTW constantly since before the PSN outage. I only stop the grind from time to time to collect/rip tickets and do some trading.

That's almost 400,000 miles of driving.

EDIT: electricity is dirt cheap here, so i leave a house fan blowing on it the whole time. The internal fan only ever runs at its slowest speed (you can't hear it unless you put your ear next to the machine)

See https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=166524 for one of many discussions about leaving the PS3 on for extended time.

By the way, those stats (200w/hr) are for the fat PS3. The slims use 94w/hr.

I already did the math in many other threads. To run a slim PS3 for five hours a day, every single day for an entire year, it would cost a whopping $1.05cdn.

Yes. A dollar and five cents. That's 1800 hours of game time, by the way.

Can we stop brining up the miniscule cost of running a PS3 please?

My PS3 stands behind my flat screen HD Tv, and there is and AC vent blowing cold air behind the TV so everything is ALWAYS cool.

Ideally id love to leave the PS3 on all the time as it would be better. But where i live (midwest) i just cannot take the chance of a thunderstorm popping up whilst out, and damaging it. Knowing my luck it would happen, and im paranoid anyway so i dont do that.

I have a friend that hasn't turned his PS3 off for months and it works better than mine. Maybe it has reached break-in point :P <----stupid joke

I only have an HDMI cabel, it's default is 1080p right? How do I change that?

Yes, the HDMI cable is fine. :sly:👍 What you have to do is:

XMB (Menu) > Settings > Display Settings > Change Resolution (you have to unselect everything except 480p/576p & then press X till it's fix)

I would recommend getting a laptop base fan which connects through USB. I've left mine running for days with the fan connected in my place in summer, 35+ on the heat scale. The thing is still running fine.

my launch model fat lady was on for the last 8 months, till she finally YLOD'ed me :( I presume the slim's will fare MUCH better through extended periods of being left on.

Unless you unplug it it doesn't make a difference. I live in the midwest also -- you may want to get a decent surge protector. I got a Belkin. Make sure you register it in order to take advantage of the insurance. We suffered a near-direct hit early this spring and the only thing which blew were the surge protectors themselves. Better than replacing my tv, PS3, Stereo, wireless hard-drive, modem, etc. Cheap insurance. I HIGHLY recommend it for lightning-prone areas.

For those of you who want to know the easy way to tone down your video settings on your PS3 if using an HDMI cable, just make sure your PS3 is off then hold down the power button for 5 seconds(or after two beeps).

It automatically resets the video settings on your PS3 to 480p.

If you want to change it back, just do it in the XMB Video Settings area.

Also remember that surge protectors wear down due to the small surges they absorb. A surge protector with status lights will help you to know when to replace them.
