Is it me or does anyone else find the standard models more desirable?

I've managed to keep off Standard cars until now, at lvl 19.

I actually think the best part of gt5 is collecting used and rare cars from the used lot. I think the people that are new to GT series stick to preimum, while older GT players prefer the rarer cars. I love going to race and checking what is new at the used lot.

I have so many of my fav cars there, and in a way its like playing lottery with cars, you will never knows what are the 6 cars that draws out out of 800. Now that IS fun to me. :D

Dealership cars are ALWAYS and forever there so what is the rush in buying them? I rather buy a IS200 GT1 race car than a Lambo sv, because ive only seen IS200 GT1 race car ONCE. Seeing rufs are like pikachu in Viridian forest:P

And some standards got a good "hood view" so they are really, really fun... and well, with reworked physics and sounds... what so bad about that?

What I can say about my 2 M3 CSLs? They are EPIC!

Old and rare cars! I've just got a Karmann-Ghia too and 2 beetles. I love my beetles! Even thinking about opening an Air-Cooled only shop on the marketplace!

I'm wondering if the standard/premium debate has to do more with "car people" vs. "video game people".

I mean I enjoy video games, but they far from consume my life. Definitely more of a casual gamer. (That doesn't mean I don't know how to drive and drive well in the game, though.) So to me, getting to "own" and try out all these cars is the huge appeal of the game, to me.

Maybe for the "video game people" the number of polygons, gameplay resolution, refresh rate, etc. are more important. I dunno. To each his/her own, though.

Well, I think that car-people will really not let pass the oportunity to drive all the cars. it's simple like that. Because for car lovers... the real ones, ALL CARS deserve respect. If GT5 had Ladas or Reliant Robins I would be driving them, drifting them and kicking the hell of arses with them and collecting smiles... There's a lot more involved than just polygons. And if not all that, I would be cruising in some nice landscape, stopping for pictures, thinking about life, enjoying the environment. Or do you need to be @ 200mph in an insanelly fast supercar to do that? I don't. I just made one awesome track in the Mt. Aso enviroment, its just so nice to drive around slowly and sometimes blast off...

GT5 for me its almost like a therapy. A world where I can lock myself inside and be rich, be a racing driver, drive whatever I do want anytime I want, almost anywhere I want. I can learn about cars, I can hear their sounds, I can feel them. The premiums make this experience go further, but with standards, its not bad. I've been playing GT since the first game, and if I had EPIC LOTS OF FUN with the previous games, less polygons, less everything, why I can't with a game that its 1000x better?

Used cars? Gotta catch them' all. That's what Pokemon people say? lol

I do love the standards. But, just like everyone else, I have no idea how to afford everything I want! Without actually doing a proper calculation I'm thinking we would need in the neighborhood of 150,000,000 to 250,000,000 credits to get everything! I wish I could play an NBA game and use my virtual salary to buy cars in GT5!

A little off subject but I thought standard cars, damage wise, were only supposed to show scratches and scuffs not deformed sheetmetal, etc. Is this true? I ask because I bent the front fender of my '74 Countach pretty good the other day. I have pictures to show if necessary.
 
I love the standards. there is something special about them, maybe it's their rarity? Plus their are some good standards out there, and not having cockpit view doesnt really matter to me as i have bumper cam. I only have 2 premiums i actually bought, 3 others i won, and 35 others are standards.
 
Most of the standard cars are simply not interesting, so I dont really buy many of them. I mean seriously how many skylines, civics. miatas. rx7s etc do we need in one game?

If i want one of those cars I will buy the premium version which is probably superior anyway

Standard or premium I have had some incredible races/drives in GT5. There have been a few where I have been giddily laughing out loud during the entire event. I had my best run ever in at the 'Ring this weekend. It was in the RUF CTR and it was just epic. I was just on and I hit every apex. It was thrilling. Then there was the practice run in the Veyron on SSR7. In the tunnel approaching 250mph all I could think of was the tears of joy in James May's eyes when he took the Veyron up to top speed in Germany. Any racing game that can capture even some of the excitement and enjoyment of real life driving will always be perfect in my book, regardless of what any critic says. GT5 does that and a whole lot more, cockpit view or not...

You're not looking closely enough or often enough.

And no, premium cars are not always superior to standard. It all comes down to how you drive & tune.

Defenitely a used car guy... just love having those random old cars... and the cars you see around on the street. Makes for some awesome splitscreen racing in the ol' bangers.
GT4 was awesome for that, as you could pretty much buy any piddley street car each , then do it up for the splitscreen rivalry. :)

I find now, even in GT5 that I'm busy saving up for something, then I see a car in the yard... just gotta grab it, just in case. :)
...th only annoyance now is that you pretty much have to buy the fully customisable gearbox so that you're not always bouncing off the limiter... and thats pricey... usually more than the car I'm putting it into. Oh well...

I would have to disagree. For example, is Clarkson not a car lover then? because he can hate a car more than an inanimate object deserves. Some cars are designed with love and respect for the machine. Some are mere alternatives to walking. So no, not all cars deserve respect

I think I'm a car lover, and I am a little bit annoyed by the low poly models because the premium cars just look so much better. There is depth to even the headlights and tail lamps, you can see how it's constructed and all. The standards are just texture and images imposed on a block of cheese.

P.S. I was driving the premium miata looking back in the cockpit view and I can see the stitching on the faux leather headrest.

I just spend 3+ hours yesterday doing nothing but reseting it to get that formula gran turismo.

I think the only cars I bought were the Taurus SHO and the Honda Odyssey <== lol wtf

this game has alot of wagons/suv crossovers that goes unnoticed thanx to all those skylines, rx7's and weird coupes.
 
I don't agree with the 'true car lovers respect all cars' thing.
We are meant to respect a FIAT MULTIPLA? A masterpiece in... Vomit-creating, eye destroying ugliness?

Nice Clarkson-a-like quote mate! :) Well, I know my comment may have created a confusion. But what I meant is: a car in all its complexity involves the life of several hundreds of people. Kazunori showed that in the intro movie. It's a pretty complicated thing in my opinion. I mean respect, and no love, passion, desire and all those other stuff.

I haven't said that all cars deserve respect in the design or performance department neither are all of them, desirable. I just meant that they deserve respect as a whole complicated thing to be build, and that basically provides freedom to people to move around, and a lot more. I don't think I must enter the whole historical achievement of cars for the humanity in this topic :). BUT What makes some of these cars SPECIAL its another kind of stuff... and in these special aspects, yeah... Fiat Multiplas are disgusting.

And about Clarkson not being a car lover then, nope. He is a true car lover for several reasons that most of us already know. But there are several different kinds of car lovers and we know how that works. No need further explanation. If you just watch Top Gear you can see that they are all different. And we all are. I don't like the Veyron much for example. I would take a McLaren F1 or even a Lotus Elise ANY TIME over it. But that doesn't mean that I didn't respect it and I really enjoy driving them in the game on top speed runs and faster tracks. I'm guilty because I do own 2 Veyrons in GT5 and as a car its one astonishing achievement.

I am more clear now friends? :)

It might be a laugh to pit the Multipla against another people carrier, in a kind of silly / irreverent online race.

I remember the first thing people did in Operation Flashpoint was to use the mission editor to make silly missions; even PC Gamer (UK) at the time set up a tractor race with the extra incentive of a player-controlled helicopter-gunship circling overhead...

Basically, a game can be much more than originally "intended" just because people have these little, uh, quirks...


I must confess I spend all of my money in the used car section. I got me an E46 M3 to pit against my brother's E92, then just recently a CSL and a GTR appeared, so I had to have them both to complete the set :p
When the Esprit Sport 350 popped up, I had to have that, too. And there were many more where I simply didn't have, or couldn't get the cash to buy - I missed out on the Virage Vantage twice, and many race machines, too - even my favourite Group C car, the Sauber C9. I even bought the Spoon Fit to race against the Lupo Cup car... But I'm also a sucker for the classics, and it didn't take me long to get the "decades" trophy. :D

Put simply, I just like driving cars and picking random match-ups against friends' also-eclectic collections, and seeing what intense match-ups ensue.
The FOV settings haven't warmed me to cockpit view, and headtracking doesn't work in the entire game - so the lack of cockpit view isn't a problem for me. Photomode can be a bit of a blow, though, sometimes. But hey, I'm enjoying collecting cars again :dopey:

Clarkson is a BIASED car lover and don't believe everything he says, Top Gear is scripted.
 
I don't make a difference whether a car is standard or premium. I do like the cockpit view, though and I also use it everytime I am driving a premium, but I am also very much used to driving the bumpercam as I have always used it in GT and other older racing games without cockpit view. These are the two views I have always been using and this might be the reason I don't have a problem switching between them...when I'm into the race I don't even realise anymore that the cockpit is lacking.
When it comes to choosing/buying a car, I buy what I like/prefer, no matter if premium or standard. Else I look at the power/weight ratio and buy the better car. I love the detail PD took into the premium's and there are also some really great models. But on the other hand I'm also digging some of the good old standards and I also love the classics, like e.g. my little Mini Marcos, which I have driven quite a lot.

I only use Bumpercam anyway

OMG this evening, I finally grinded myself to lvl 18, Now all i do every evening after work is this :D
- Expert Turbo Challenge HSR = 36k in roughly 3mins.

Hop to used car section and buy cars :D:D

I hit the jackpot tonight because I saw
- Mines N1 base R34 - 200k
- Opera Peformance 350z - 98k
- Subaru Impreza Sedan WRX STi Ver.VI '99 ( i LOVE this scobby :P this is probably the best scooby afte 22B. Imo.)

I saved up 600k and blew 350k in one go :yuck: But its so worth it!! Dude i have to share you my happiness :sly: Brought them ALL!

I brought some weird looking trucks as well, they were cheap, random and cute so I have like 6 weird loaf vans :dunce:
 
Yeah, i like the standard cars better too.

In a matter of fact, all the cars in my garage are standard at this moment. After i picked up my Ctr2, I lost all reasons to continue to use my R8 4.2.
 
I'm the exact same way. ANY car that I want in real life I buy as soon as I see it. This includes many $20k cars because that's more along the lines if what I have my sights set on, being all that i can reasonabky hope to afford. The supercars are great, but I don't ever aspire to actually own one. An Accord Euro-R on the other hand, right up my alley. I may not plan on ever really racing with them, but I sure as heck want it in my garage. I think the fact that they are attainable in real life is part of the attraction.
 
I'm too much of a graphics whore to be able to stand the standard cars. They look 'alright' but the difference with premium is huge. Combine that with the insane prices some of them have (many millions) I can't really get myself to spend that much hard earned money on something that doesn't even look good and is useless in photo mode.

Maybe I'm a weirdo but I try to avoid them like the plague unless I really need them for a challenge (not happened so far besides some prize cars that I didn't have to spend money on).
 
I like the standard cars lot, and browse there all the time looking for good finds (just spent way too much on an M3 GTR) but I wish I they looked better, and/or were customizable. Such a shame sometimes. Otherwise, I'm quite addicted as well.
 
my favorite part of the game is looking for standard cars in the used car lot after races.

last night i finally found an SRT4 (car i actually own)
 
At the moment I am looking for two more M3 CLS's One for light tuning and one for a full on race tune.
 
I hate the standards. I have bought a few of the cars I really want that are standard models and will buy a few more when I have millions of credits just to have and occasionally drive the cars I love but I will go for a premium 99% of the time and can only dream that the cars I love will eventually be updated to premium.
 
myself, i really do not care if the car is standard or premium... if it allows me to go quick enough to beat the competition, then that's all i think that counts

a main reason for this would be because i'm most fond of the up-high view from the rear of the car; both S and P cars get this

i can see peoples' frustrations who like to use the interior views, however!
