I think the picture Taki Inoue shared yesterday on Twitter (to which I have no objection, nothing graphic about it, all I see is a doctor attending to Bianchi and holding his head/helmet) gives us a hint that the helmet didn't suffer a direct impact and remained structurally intact. Considering that Bianch hit the crane head-on and that the front of his car actually "lifted" the back of the crane, I guess we may assume that it was the weight of Sutil's car that avoided a much more horrible crash.
Considering the (apparent, from the "doctor" photo) structural integrity of Bianchi's helmet, one can only assume that either something else (not the side of the crane) impacted the helmet without destroying it (like a wheel, as was the case with Henry Surtees), or that is was simply the overall number of Gs of the deceleration that caused the trauma.
As far as I could see, the elevated cockpit sides looked more or less intact, which would explain minimal damage to his helmet. If he didn't have these, he didn't have any chances at all I think...
