On a brighter note, he is the first person to die after Ayrton Senna 20 years ago. Doesn't make the accident any less tragic though.

The death of the poet was kept from his poems.
I should explain - this is from W.H. Auden's "In Memory of W.B. Yeats". I was preparing notes on it for my classes next week when I heard the news, and it somehow seemed appropriate. It doesn't perfectly line up, but the more I think about it, the more I see in it. The above is probably my favourite line in the poem; to me, it suggests that if we could somehow tells the cars what had been lost, and if they could understand it, then they would simply stop performing.

From my understanding, FIA has decided that at the Hungering GP to deploy the Virtual Safety Car on lap 17. I also found a change.org for Jules number to be retired. I don't know my F1 history but I think this might be a first. I saw both of these on my FB feed. If anyone can find this that would be great, and if completely wrong I will remove this info.

Second, if you count Marussia's Maria de Villota although hers was a testing accident and not in a race.

While admirable that strikes me as unlikely, I'm afraid to say.

The system where a driver carries a number for the whole of their F1 career is very very new so it hasn't happened before. That said it seems believable that #17 will be retired for good, that would be a good decision.

Who's to say what's right or wrong until we hear it from F1 themselves? You're just passing info on that you've read ;)

Can't really describe the feelings right now, especially after reading what his dad said about the lack of progress seen lately.

Not to be intrusive or anything, but what does Bernie have now to brag about?

I haven't seen any reports suggesting this to be true. I hope not either, retiring numbers and unnecessarily deploying the safety car are ridiculous ideas. Bianchi will live on in the memories of Formula One fans without ruining a race to pay tribute to him.

I think for Hungary, they should leave the 17th grid space empty as a mark of respect before the race start.

Just found this picture on Facebook.
At least one of them survived his head injury :guilty:

VSC wouldn't effect the race though, they have to maintain the gaps.

I think the most likely solution is probably a memorial ceremony during the driver line up on the grid. I'm also suspecting there'll be a lot of #ripjules on both cars and helmets that weekend.

I respectfully disagree, the point at which the VSC kicks in (and stops) affects different drivers to differing levels depending on where they are on the track and their specific speed at the time of calling. F1 is a split-second sport and the VSC has the potential to affect races by more than that margin per-driver.

The only reason it's a good idea is because, when required, it causes far fewer problems than the standard Safety Car. I don't think calling a VSC mid-race would be an appropriate or acceptable tribute. There'll be plenty of drivers thinking about him over the whole weekend, we don't need to see a helmeted procession of them doing it for one lap.

Minutes silence before the race would be appropriate enough. If the teams want to do anything livery wise it'd be nice too.

So one thing so far that was rumored is completely true. Now to see about the VSC. Still really bummed about his passing :(
