Yea...you haven't played much of Halo or Resistance 2.

How can you not think it's ridiculous to play a game TWICE and then directly compare it to something else?

"Hey, I watched the first 10 minutes of Varsity Blues, it was basically like Remember the Titans"

It's just a foolish statement to make if you haven't really experienced either game to a great extent.

That was my mistake for not being specific. I played Halo 3 for hours when it first came out. It was all that people were playing out of my xbox live friends. So i played for a while, kind of got into it. Smoothe running game. I had my fun, but it grew old and repetative. That is what my comparison to R2 online came from. The flow or feel of the game was similar so i didn't enjoy it. As i mentioned i didn't give the competitive multi-player a chance because it was that bad. The co-op multi-player was enjoyable and had a good concept to it. Enjoyed it for hours. I never wrote a full-length review where peoples purchases would be based on. I can see your "Resistance" Insignia so you are most likely an affecionado of the game. Not trying to butt heads just stating my opinion. If you don't agree with it and you don't it's all good. Thats the beauty of life. Different strokes for different folks. :)👍

You can't even imagine what Killozne 2 is untill you've played it. Comparing it with anything else outhere is jus plain wrong. And demo doesn't show you a 0,1% of the content and atmosphere.

This type of post really drives me nut, Dang you Amar212 :sly: Can't wait :scared:

This game seems like the ps3 community's biggest best kept secret.

What I mean by that is the only people that seem to know about this game is the online ps3 community, ask the average joe what they think of Killzone 2 and they give you the "deer in the headlights" look.

I always thought Killzone was going to be the game that made people want a ps3 but if they choose not to advertise Killzone then surely it just going to be yet another FPS and then average joe isn't going to know Killzone from Haze......

Aparently theres a few million been ploughed into advertising for this title. I say "aparently" as I've not seen a single advert. Has anyone?
According to the PlayStation blog we will be shown the ads before they air.

Although, I know it has been reviewed ina fair number of magazines and on X-Play. In fact, Adma Sessler had to do one of his Sessler's soapbox video casts on G4's Web site to fire back at the hate mail he got for reviewing it so well.

I would say that to those who are into gaming it is not unknown, but for those who don't pay attention they won't know until the advertising hits. The problem is, how can a 30 second TV advert show someone who hasn't been paying attention that it is different than other shooters?

Maybe the issue is sonys aproach to advertising aiming at the hardcore gamers who already know about the products, maybe sony should take a look at the Wii branding which is aimed at casual and non gamers..........just a thought and one that has no doubt been discussed at lengh by sony.

True... but a game like Killzone 2 isn't going to find much of an interested audience among your typical casual and non gamers, unlike your typical Wii game.

KZ2 is pretty clearly a "hardcore" game, and someone who doesn;t follow gaming news or read reviews is not likely someone who would want to play a hardcore FPS game in the first place.

Xbox 360 owners not paying attention to PlayStation news.

People who have held of on a PS3, due to price, until they see a game they really want.

Those two descriptions cover most of my non-PS3 owning, but gamer, friends.

And they have not heard of Killzone 2?... and that a hardcore FPS game is what they are looking for to get them to buy a console... but still don't bother to read gaming news and reviews let alone FPS sites who are doing nothing but talk about KZ2 for the last year? If so that seems very odd.

The 10 second teaser trailers start in the UK this week, and given that pre-orders in Europe alone are over the 1 million mark I would say its going to sell rather well (and that was back on the 5th Feb).

The initial production run will most likely be taken by pre-orders, so an advertising campaign to then pick up sales for just after launch would make a lot of sense.

They have the budget put aside for this one, so I hope they use it well.

They have heard of it and see it has hype, but they do not see what makes it stand out from every other shooter out there. Halo 3 had hype, GTAIV had hype, both Gears had hype.

Based on hype, and even reviews, alone this game does not stand out any different and they just say, "meh" at the idea of me letting them play the demo. What will be the deciding factor is when I actually have it and pop it in while they are visiting.

Actually one of my friends has a PS3 and hasn't logged in to the PSN since Gears 2 came out and the hype hasn't even motivated him enough to try getting the demo.

The simple fact is that after numerous hyped shooters it is hard for this one to stand out any more than others, particularly when marketing has been minimal at best.

Heck, just look at my posts in this thread. I was skeptical until I played the demo.

And a 30 sec commercial, or any kind of advertising campaign is not likely going to change their minds.... unbiased reviews and of course trying it out might.

Thus spending money on an advertising campaign for that kind of person would be nothing short of throwing away good money.

Like Scaff said, based on the sales rank on Amazon and some of the pre-order numbers being thrown around... clearly the word is already out, and any advertising is in my mind mostly just going to go to waste, because there is very little I can see about this game that is going to appeal to a casual gamer who likes Wii type games, and for the hardcore gamer fans, there is already a ridiculous amount of information, screen shots, videos, reviews, etc available to them.

A 30-sec commercial isn't likely the thing that will all of a sudden be the tipping point needed to get them to buy the game let alone a console.

What I am thinking of are the frat guys who find surfing the net for news, or reading any news, a nerdy thing to do. If they aren't playing a video game they are watching sports. They only use their computer for necessities, like school or work. Those guys exist and in large numbers. And judging by the brand logos on their clothes, they are suckers for good marketing.

Anyway, I am going to stop this before I say too much. My company does a lot of marketing research stuff, which is why I have a lot of confidence in marketing. But if I keep going I am bound to say more than I am allowed too. I will say this, my paycheck comes in because marketing succesfully makes people buy stuff they normally wouldn't consider. The problem right now is that if the consumer doesn't have the money they can't spend it.

So, even if I could lay out all my reasoning the economy still has the chance of throwing off the entire process.

And now that I think about it, ^ that may be why LBP and now KZ2 advertising has been minimal.

I will say this, my paycheck comes in because marketing succesfully makes people buy stuff they normally wouldn't consider.

Agreed 100%... and although there been a lot of extremely successful products that had very little in the way of (paid) advertising, I agree though that marketing and advertising is VERY important, but not if it targets the wrong market or more importantly doesn't increase sales enough to off set the cost.

But doing the marketing efficiently is what stops you from targeting the wrong audience.

Exactly.

And most of the examples given so far do not appear to be the kind of person or group who are going to make a purchase decision based on a commercial.

My experience isn't with games, but rather with films, and I will say that the most effective advertising are those mentioning extremely positive reviews and awards and not just showing clips of the film, so if Sony is smart, they should list some of the published reviews that gave it a perfect score like:
  • GamePro
  • Eurogamer
  • G4 TV
  • 1UP
  • Gaming Nexus

Or to really grab attention from some of the 360 fans, how about this little gem from an editor at Planet Xbox 360 no less:

Killzone 2 Convinced Me to Buy a Playstation 3
Posted on Feb 8, 2009 on PlanetXbox360

Editor's Note: I was talking to a buddy online about the recent Killzone 2 demo, take in mind this friend of mine is a massive Xbox 360 fanboy, and to my surprise he loved the Killzone 2 demo. I asked him to write up an article detailing his experience with the upcoming PS3 exclusive, that opinion/editorial is below:

Killzone 2 has been in development for approximately 5 years, and judging by the strength of the demo it was worth the wait and is shaping up to be the true saving grace of the PS3. The demo that exploded onto the European marketplace this past Thursday has incorporated into it a very sleek menu system that is very fitting with the style of the game itself. A nice touch to the games loading screen is a HD image of the scenery featured in different maps that can be tilted and turned in a 3-Dimentional fashion by using the PS3s Sixaxis controller system. This demo has convinced us to go out and purchase a Playstation 3 immediately, which will compliment the Xbox 360's in our gaming cabinets quite nicely, especially with a game like Killzone 2.

The demo itself is set at the very beginning of the full games campaign mode, where your character “Sev” an ISA soldier and his team mates including “Garza” and “Rico” crash land onto the planet Helghan. Landing approximately 200m short of their Landing Zone they are thrown directly into a heated battle taking place on a planet consumed by all out war. After a short yet very pretty cut scene of the crash landing the team must fight their way through a beach and a warehouse to the original LZ. Although the demo is short (about 10 – 15min of play time) it is packed full of staggeringly realistic experiences which will leave you speechless and wanting to play over and over again, at one point a man right next to me in the advance was blown across the beach and another man had been set on fire by some kind of explosive, after about 10 seconds I realised that I had just completely stopped in the middle of a warzone in complete awe of these events and the hectic battle going on around me and had to collect myself and continue on the advance toward the enemy. This opening scene also showcases the amazing graphical advances which have shattered boundaries which previous FPS games have merely pushed month by month since the start of this gaming generation, truly showing what the Playstation 3 really has to offer when pushed to what we can only imagine are its limits.

Once the beautiful cut scene ends and you are thrown into the deep end of this fierce battle against the Helghast it plays similar to most modern top-notch First Person Shooters but with the little differences that FPS games have been needing for a long time, such as intelligent enemy A.I., a first person cover system and realistic animations such as the many different animations that occur when a Helghan soldier is gunned down and falls to the ground dead. In fact the many small differences, which we as gamers have been craving, are what really separates this game from previous shooters, the only disappointing similarity is the lame jokes and corny dialogue.

3094188406_c51d1f92a8.jpg

The chaotic environment really leaves you with a feeling of participation in this war as wherever you look there are different actions taking place whether it be dying team mates, explosions, shrapnel flying past your face or collapsing buildings...and believe me that list is by no means exhaustive. The A.I. on both sides is for once very intelligent; your teammates will take cover in strategic positions and fend for themselves, which sometimes leaves you feeling as if you’re playing a co-op game with other humans. The intelligence of the enemy A.I. really shines through as the fearless Helghast constantly advance towards you implementing complex and coordinated flanking manoeuvres with their team mates, they will also attempt to distract you with grenade blasts to cover their swift approaches onto your teams position.

There are 5 weapons that you can find and use during the course of the demo each as deadly as the last and each with their own strengths and weaknesses in different types of combat. The 2 assault rifles are the M82-G which is the standard rifle for all ISA infantrymen, the M82-G looks to be modelled off the M4 assault rifle but with a bullpup design. The standard assault rifle for the Helghan forces is the STA-52 LAR, there are also the M4 Revolver which is the standard ISA side arm and the Helghast STA 14 which closely resembles the M14 semi-automatic rifle. Last but not least is the M80, an ISA rocket launcher with devastating effects on any man or structure on the receiving end of its rocket propelled round.

Killzone will become most certainly a game to be remembered, taking a huge step up and demolishing most boundaries set by previous FPS games and showing the true power and potential of the Playstation 3. The retail version of the game hits stores in Europe and North America on the 27th of February 2009, expect a full review/feature later this month as we think this is a game all gamers should play, it's that good.

While it hasn't convinced me to buy KZ2, it is certainly an impressive endorsement from a very surprising source... and certainly more effective than a commercial that just shows a few seconds of clips of the game... regardless of who sees it.

I saved £50 buying a car seat for my new girl online. So I spent the saving on a ridiculously expensive "I'm the big brother" t-shirt for my son, and on pre-ordering KZ2.

You all knew I'd do it eventually!

Knew you couldn't hold out for long.

Now if you ordered through Play.com (and I know you use them) that means you got KZ2 for £30.

Twenty quid on a T-shirt for sprog - you mad bugger

So, the Killzone 2 TV ad for the US came out on the US PlayStation Store Last night.

I only have one problem. Korn did the slow motion bullet thing in a much cooler way 10 years ago.

This ad will do little to increase sales in my opinion. Some actually gameplay footage mixed in would have been nice, but for now all anyone has to judge it by is a pre-rendered video that won't convince anyone this is different than any other shooter.

Well, even though my ps3 is dead, I played the demo on a friends ps3 and I am sold. The gameplay is everything that I hoped it would be. The only thing I dislike is the fact that when behind cover and reloading, you cant move. That and I hope I can change the controls a little.

This is going to sound a little Korny, sorry for the pun, but 2 things which have croped up namely "reloading whilst looking through the scope" and "reloading in cover and not being able to move" I just have to comment on.
First up I'm ex military and secondly at the tender age of 37 I "play" airsoft milsim regularly (yes I'm one of those) and I have to say first up reloading whilst looking through your scope is prety pointless if not imposible and again if your in cover and your reloading, why would you want to move? you have no rounds in your gun in both instances, therefore your reloading it, the last thing you want to do is make yourself a target! as for the scope issue, try looking through a rifle scope whilst doing anything with your hands than actualy holding the rifle steady.
Not a pop at anyone just I find it a bit pointless to complain about something in a game which is making it more lifelike.

Good post Hereward. One thing that adds to the difficulty - in a good way - is the weapon swapping. Whilst it's annoying not to be able to flip from assault rifle to RPG, it is at least realistic and forces a serious tactical rethink, which I'll be interested to play out in the full game. It always quite worried me that when I got to the end of other FPS games, I appeared to be carrying around 700Kg and 40 metres-cubed of weaponry.

I got around my conundrum with that in the demo by just lobbing a grenade into the fuel supplies that I was supposed to shoot with the RPG. Never had to let go of my assault rifle.

There are a few pointers at realisim with KZ2 and they are welcome additions to any FPS and moves gameplay away from reaction time to stratergie and really steps up the team play in multi player! And yeah got to agree with Giles in regards to the tardis like inventry systems of some games, lugging my 11lbs M4 for a day is enough and that mini gun weighs 20lbs which kind of gets to you after an hour LOL
Anyway back to Killzone, and reality. first up theres usualy a clear defernition between realistic fps such as Rainbow 6 SOCOM and GRAW, and your "action" fps such as COD, Halo and GOW and this is stratergie V's reaction. Now that dosn't mean to say you cant have one without the other, but the best FPS have an equal mix of both, that can be said of KZ2, from using cover and aimed short bursts of fire to coming round a corner slap bang into a helgast soldier and unleashing a full clip Killzone has it all in heaps LOL
Theres a checklist that you need to go through with FPS and like all good FPS KZ2 ticks all the boxes multiple weapons, online play, grenades, flash graphis, ect, ect, ect....but that can be said about alot of FPS on the market. It's that hook that makes your game standout thats the elusive factor, now if we look at the "best" FPS on the market, the dady, the best of the best.....yes COD4 (I'm sorry if you disagree but it's one hell of a game) what dose it do which is so special? easy, it sucks you in, you become engaged with what is happening. sounds simple but if you get it wrong you end up with a haze....Now one thing that stands out in the teaser demo of KZ2 is how it sucks you in, how theres multiple things happening all the time which gives that feeling of the chaos of a battle field. It's when you hear everyone saying the demos too short, 10 mins is not enough, I've played through it multiple times......thats when you can see people have got the bug, they want to know what happens next......this is the sighn of a classic, as long as the MP aspects are there (and the beta guys seem to think it is) then there could be a new daddy

Great post and I one I fully agree with.

I can also assure you that the MP more than lives up to what you see on the demo, from the manner in which the matches play out to the layout of the maps and the balance of the weapons, all add up to force a more tactical approach to play (which I think is a big plus point).

The match side of things I loved from the beta, basically each match consists of multiple mini-matches that switch seamlessly. So you could be currently engaged on a Search and Destroy mission (Plant a bomb basically) and be deep into the other teams part of the map when the game type changes to Assassination and you are the target! Which if you survive makes it all the more sweet.

In the beta every match I played in had friendly fire switched on as well, which forces a more measured approach to the play (no spray and pray or 'nade spamming without consequences).

Map layout was very far in regard to the placement of spawn points and targets for the KZ2 versions of plant the bomb and base defend, giving no team the real advantage, but always favouring those teams who work as a team (trust me if one side plays as a collection of single players and the other plays as a team then the end result is almost always as it should be).

The weapon selection also has one thing in common with COD4 (and something most FPS fail at), and that is the guns offer a great range and are very different, but the gun you start with is more than capable of serving you well no matter what the opponent has. In COD4 is was the M16 (still my favourite weapon in the game) and in KZ2 its the ISA and Helgast standard assault rifles (as you get to play with in the demo).

I was gutted when the closed MP beta came to an end, overjoyed when I then got in the open beta and since that ended I have missed playing it more than almost any other game on-line.

Only have to wait until Friday, and fingers crossed Play.com get it to me early, and I have to admit to checking the order status daily (and that will get more frequent from tomorrow). Not done that since GT5:P was due for release.

I understand what you're saying hereward, and I too think reloading while aiming is pointless. But reloading while moving behind cover is a little more necessary. If im taking cover and I press the reload button, and then i realize that someone can see me and is shooting at me, what am I supposed to do? I cant move to a safer location until im done reloading? Is there a cancel reload button?
