Knives, Swords, and everything in between.

Time to bring back some life in this thread.

I decided to forget about the Spyderco Tenacious and go for one of their better knives - the Delica. I definitely have no regrets. It's a nice, light, compact knife that looks and feels great. It's razor sharp out of the box too so no complaints there. I'll admit the FRN handle does look a bit cheap but it is grippy and has a good feel so I don't really mind.

Specs
Overall length : 7 1/8"
Blade length : 2 7/8"
Blade Steel: VG-10
Grip: Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon

Also picked up a basic Swiss Army Knife to replace an old, generic multi tool that is quite literally falling apart and a Smith's knife sharpener to keep everything sharp.

My god I had completely forgotten about this thread... Hahaha. Go slims!

And I've seen and heard quite a few things about Spyderco. Pretty good stuff too. And I still haven't gotten around in buying myself a new knife... But I have been trying to get to Home Depot and buying some supplies for a "project" Further info will be mentioned if anyone's curious. ^^.

I've seen the knife sharpener on Amazon. Looks very handy.

I've decided to go for fixed blade knife first. I'm currently set on this knife I also found on Amazon:

Here's the Amazon page. Since I don't know much about knives, I'd welcome any input or opinion on it. :P

Yeah a6m5 I got the sharpener off of amazon. It has good reviews and it was only $9 so I figured I'd give it a try. I'm gonna try it on one of my older, dull blades and see how it works.

That Gerber is quite a bit of knife. It's even got a stainless steel buttcap for the event you need to egress from a helicopter (according to the amazon info lol) Looks like a good buy though. 👍

@Slims : Might as well, heh.

This isn't my photo, but it's an example of what I'm doing.

A hidden blade! The one I'll be doing, is going to be gravity/force driven (by thrusting your arm downward or slashing motions) and having a spring with enough tension to retract it back. Simple enough, yes?

My friend actually got a replica sword that Raiden used in MGS4 as a birthday gift.

Our minds would've exploded if the sword was able to heat up and glow orange like in the game.

Nice! Looks simple enough but how does the blade lock in place when it's concealed?

Aw, man... I shouldn't have opened this thread. I miss my Spyderco. :( Bloody expensive habit when you keep losing them. :ouch:

Hm. If you have the machining chops, might I also suggest some sort of toggle locking mechanism? So after it's extended, it doesn't automatically retract from spring tension; stays locked out until you unlock it.

I was following a tutorial on how to make a hidden blade similar to the way I described it... He basically takes a sawblade, due to its flexibility and cuts a chunk away, hammering it into a curve and secures that to the base. Curving upward, it glides over a bolt secured to the slide holding the blade, but the other top half of the bolt/screw is cut off, to provide a small ridge to glide over the rounded half of the bolt, and falls into the ridge and locks it, which is released by a piece of string.

Nice! Looks simple enough but how does the blade lock in place when it's concealed?

It won't be locked in place... Hahaha!! Hopefully no sudden movements will bring it out.

My gosh this thread has died.... Time to spark it back to life, hopefully? :)
I never forgot about the thread, but I finally just got around to ordering one of at least two new knives I want:

First, I was looking at these two:

43491894.jpg

Kershaw Groove(top) and Benchmade...... basically, any spring assisted full-size pocket knife from them. Price-wise, Groove was about $50, Benchmade ran about double that.

Naturally, my first order was this:

 KA-BAR Cutlass Machete. I still have the Jeep pocket knife(mentioned earlier in this thread), and basically, I saw Cutlass on Amazon, then youtube, I was sold. Review rating is very high with this one, and on youtube, it's put through work generally reserved for camp axes. Best part: It's $41.38.

I'm still deciding on the pocket knife. I love Kershaw, but Groove is out. My buddies let me try their Kershaws with the same index-finger opening, and I wasn't really impressed, and neither were they. Benchmade is still a contender, but for $100, it might take awhile longer as I'm hoping to get a rifle sometime next year.

Speaking of dead threads, please check out the Survival thread I created couple of months ago: Survival Discussion Thread

It kind of got going, then died. Thanks. :P

I'd hold off and get the Griptilian. My friend has one and it's a great folding knife. I find it a little on the large side for an EDC but I'm used to my more compact and lighter Spyderco. It does perform well though, he uses it almost every day at work and hasn't had any complaints. Good steel which is easy to sharpen and holds a sharp edge. Strong locking mechanism too.

I'd go with the plain edge version though. I've never been a fan of a partially serrated edge, especially on a smaller folding blade.

Bayonet made in 1908 in Germany (Solingen) with original leather sheath. This particular model was hard to find in good condition. Superb steel quality and great craftsmanship!

I'm looking at the Benchmade also(Oregon company!).

I got this from Amazon today:

And it's going back tomorrow.

I ordered it because I really liked the looks of it. My first impression of Spyderco was that their knives looked weird. But this model, Tenacious, I liked right off the bat, so I order it.

I hold it in my hand, and right away, folded, it feels too wide(duh). I practice flicking the knife open at work, and after something like 50 times or so, I start hearing scraping noise coming from the hinge, and it no longer operates as smoothly. Simultaneously, the blade lock thing inside the knife tightened up like it was being pressed too hard against the back of the blade.

Oh, well.

I have a couple of swords I'll have to photo and post later. Also, if I can find them, have 2 in progress knife blades made from a section of what used to be an 8 foot long blade that was mounted on a piece of machinery called a roller dryer. The original blade as I said was a rectangle shape, 8' long, 6-8" deep by about 1/8" or so thick and was made of some very high carbon steel which refused to rust. It wasn't stainless though. Anyway, I'll put up a couple pics later on this week.

Here's this Asian's weapon.....

It is my second knife this week, and it is Benchmade. Finally. I think it's called 551 Griptilian. I've heard so much about this patented Axis Lock. While I'm not in love with it, it has worked really well so far. I just hope the construction quality is better than the Spyderco I received & sent back on Monday.

I don't think you'll have any issues with the Benchmade. Like I said before my friend has one that sees daily abuse and it's still going strong.

As for your problem with the Tenacious, it seems strange. Sure they are Spydercos low end knives but they aren't really known to have much issues. If it was me I probably would have opened the thing up and gave it a good clean and lube. It could have just been some debris. Probably easier to just return it though. I'm glad I haven't experienced any problems like that with my Delica.

I don't think it was debris, it felt like the alignment went off. It was fine at first, then the folding action got rough, and the blade lock was sticking like it was pressed hard against the back of the blade.

Regardless, I do think it was an isolated case. The thing had excellent rating on Amazon.

Stainless steel is too hard and brittle for a sword like that, if used in a fight it would probably snap and could severely injure the wielder - its just for decoration only. Good large blades are made of spring steel.
