LAN Play option: Going the way of the floppy disc?

This is a simplified way to do LAN in GT4.

You see you need the router, so hook up the consoles to the router via Ethernet cables.
You then need to do some option changes to figure who the host is and name each console.
There are some options to change for tire wear, #of laps, boost, etc.
You can pick your tracks (only so many per console) and 30 cars per console to use for LAN.
You then save settings and reboot the consoles.

Start your consoles and proceed.
The host is last to enter the LAN menu as the other consoles must be ready for the host to find them and connect.
Once the host has done this the track menu appears and you pick the track, then the cars you want to use. Then race.

I have left out a lot of info, but this is basically how to do it in GT4.
At first it is quite confusing but once setup, it is very easy to do, no harder than a normal setup.

If one of the guys with the game would do a video of the "In Game Manual"

This should cover all the options available if/any and give some idea if LAN/Multiscreens is going to be supported.
Someone may have confirmation before we get to release day if not I will be willing to test/try different things using 3xPS3 and 3 discs. However I have no past experience in doing this with GT4.
At this point things look bleek unless these options are available with a primary console creating a lobby/session via PSN and then also combining LAN.

For what it's worth, Black Ops has a LAN mode.

It may not do multi-screen setups, I don't know that part as I didn't have my friend go any farther than the 1st screen after selecting LAN.

yes please!!!! Please please.

nice!

It would be cool to attend local GT5-LAN parties if the feature is included in the full game!
:)

we will also be trying with 5 or 6 ps3s soon after launch, possibly Thursday 25th so I will report back. if LAN play is not there we are going to have to invest in multiple broadband connections and all sorts to get a good experience which is going to be expensive.

for what its worth we hooked up 3 ps3s last week with black ops and it worked like a charm.

What do you mean by saying it is going to be expensive?
Why do you need multiple broadband connections?
We have used up to 4 PS3's at once with a just one cable hi speed internet and one router for GT5P.
I'm in the USA, are you from a local that needs multi connections to keep from going over your monthly limit?
Unless the router you used before has enough ports you will need a new/bigger router.
We used the same one we use for GT4 LAN.
I saw a video or screen shot for GT5 and it uses a 256K hook up.
Do you need wheels and setups also, because that can be expensive?

I would like to know how it works for you as you will be doing it before we get a chance.

we currently have a LAN setup for racing with Grid so the equipment is there already.

The reason I say it will be expensive is because we might need to get multiple broadband connections due to the connection speeds. We tried to race NFS:Shift with 6 PS3s through one connection (a 10mb d/l, 500 u/l) but after 3 people connected to PSN and then to the EA servers, if any more people connected it would boot someone else off.

We never managed to pin this down exactly (whether it was an EA limitation on number of connections from one IP address or upload bandwidth exceeded) but with Grid, we had no problems playing 5 or 6 PS3s online on the same connection. I had some communication with EA / the game developers but they weren't able to help.

Throughput is totally irrelevant though.

Due to the small size of the messages, round trip time (or ping) is much more relevant. And that only depends on geographic location.

If you would like to play with everybody in the world, you could end up playing with someone up to 19 949 km away from you (on a boat on the other side of the world). The quickest way something could reach you then (through fiber) is in 99 ms.
If we (optimistically) assume the pacific takes up half the world, the worst you can have is 50 ms.
My point is: playing online only works when you're playing with someone who lives not very far away. And the speed of your connection doesn't even matter.

if it is only round trip time that matters and you are talking about 6 ps3s in the same location trying to connect and play together then how do you calculate the round trip time to what is effectively the same place?

is it just round trip to the isp and back? Is it double that?

NO MULTISCREEN OR LAN OPTIONS SO FAR.

And with that, I suppose we can bring this thread to a rather sad end.

I wasn't expecting LAN support to be in the game but hoped I would be surprised. And I have even less hope for a patch or for the feature to suddenly reappear in the future.

I can only hope that PD has worked long and hard on the prediction code and thoroughly tested their on-line system.

But as this thread was originally written to indicate, no matter how good the online code is, it will never be as good or quick or lag free as a closed LAN environment.

And so it goes. 👍:(👎 See you all on-line.

bummer! oh well, here is hoping for LAN play update!

It's the time to get a small ip package (64 bytes normally) from you to your friend and back. It could still pass a dozen routers (even if you're living close to him) and that always takes some time too, certainly when you've got different ISPs. 15 ms max i'd say.

to really test it:
ping -c 10 [ip]
traceroute (to see which (how many) routers the packages go through)

the theory: (not relevant in short distances)
RTT (in ms) = 2 x (distance in km)/(200 000)
with 200 000 m/s = speed in fiber (= 2/3 of speed of light)

system link should a god damn shoe in for a racing game. I was extremely pissed that Forza 3 decided to drop it.

well this is very disappointing news but I'm not surprised at all.

All we can hope now is that they have done something clever with the multiplayer where you have one PS3 connect to PSN acting as a host and the others communicate on the LAN. That is what someone suggested earlier that the setup looked like for GT academy.

Not going to hold my breath though :(

This is dissapointing. I have been thinking about the possibility of a race meet with friends but it seems won't be possible.

I'll follow with interest the future of the UKGTP Events, I bet someone will find a way around this lack of LAN support :)

Why won't sony give LAN support to GT5? I mean I can understand the Forza 3 thing. XBL isn't free and getting LAN there will make some players avoid going through XBL. But for the PS3, it's preposterous. It's Wifi ready and PSN service is free... I hope Sony isn't planning on having people pay for multiplayer. :S

I hope so! That would be fab!

This is how we roll:

Wow. Bandwidth is always variable. But at a distance of 950 mi, a ping speed of 3 ms is quite an eye opener. A noisy network and DNS resolution issues can increase the seek time for a lot of people and 20~25 ms is generally pretty good, even if they're nearly on top of the closest test server. I've never seen anything that quick.

But in the end, you can still suffer latency issues if the connections of those you race against are lousy.

You can't use the system link of Xbox 360 to play online. Except a few very early games all games enforce a ping limit. If your ping is above 30ms you get disconnected.

I was able to get my 68 year old wife interested in racing on the PS3 using the LAN feature on Dirt 2. I got the second PS3 and wheel so I wouldn't have to sit and watch when my neighbor came over. It has been a fun way to get friends into racing also.

Last night my wife beat me three out of five Dirt 2 races and she has much less time driving.

Why can this be available on Dirt 2 but not GT?
