The engine is beautiful though!

I've actually had the opportunity to drive an X6. They're extremely roomy, tons of power, and pretty fun to drive. Not to mention they look quite different and good sitting in a parking lot.

I like the X5. Never sat in an X6, but it certainly doesn't look as good as a 5. The 5 is the most comfortable SUV/Truck interior I've ever been in. I can stretch all 6'4" of me all the way out.

Same... I'm 6'6" and can fit my feet in the pedal box without feeling to scrunched... I love the reclining rear seats, though.

Wait... seriously? You're shorter than Hammond! but you could probably reach the pedals... the seat travels pretty far forward and back...

I sat in an X6 once. Pretty cool machine. I wanted to talk about that in a YouTube video, but I wished that I had pictures from this year's Houston Auto Show to share to make a video with. But it's a very interesting machine.

I disapprove 👎

If Porsche has the laziest design studio in the world, BMW has the most confused.

Porsche makes some very stunning cars for a lazy design studio...

I'd take that over this.. although, I could live with a BMW V8 under the hood. :D

The beauty of the situation is that for a similar price, you can get that same V8 under the hood of a car that is actually cool.

I have. Its not a HUGE difference on the inside, but just in the interest of finding something interesting, I climbed in the back seat. There is still plenty of room, kinda, but the weird way that the roof rakes back and the overall coupe shapes make things seem a bit strange. The rear doors are smaller than average, and I actually found it to be a bit awkward getting in and out.

Most people who hate the X6 have never driven it. Of course, some journalists still object to it after driving it, on a purely philosophical level...

Most everyone (including me) who's driven the X6 agree that it's an amazing "SUV". Handles like a sportscar... with all those active systems conspiring, transparently, in the background to make it feel like a smaller car.

I love it to kibbles. I'll take a twin turbodiesel, please.

Four seats? For someone who can't see the point in a 5 or 7 seat SUV, especially when you can get a 7-10 seat van or minivan, that small disadvantage doesn't really mean much to me.

One of these days I'm going to buy a Hummer just to teach them all a lesson.
Hell yeah, And you will be useful off road!

The Cayenne looks miles better inside, and I found it much more comfy. I was disapointed when I checked out there X5 (They now have a Cayenne)

Holy mother fxucking shXt!!!!!!!!!! What a beast !.

///M Power for ever.

By passing the swear filter is a gainst the AUP... And what makes such an amazing machine? I see it as meh...

I think its one of the best looking vehicles on the road, well as far as trucks and sport-utility vehicles go. The shape and stance of the truck is very different from what you normally see out there, which is why I love it :D

Had an X5... brilliant car.

The X6 just looks wrong to my eyes... the proportions aren't right no matter how well it drives... and I'm sure an X5 with the same suspension would handle just as well.

Even if it is a great machine to drive, it's still pointless. The 5-series is great to drive, it's smaller and it suits its purpose better (or at least has a purpose, we still haven't learned what the X6's is). It drives great? Sure. That doesn't make it any better than the alternatives, especially when the alternatives drive just as well.

Think about the R32 vs the GTI. With the R32 you get the AWD, the V6 and things, but it won't drive any better than the GTI, it isn't much faster at all, and it costs more. That's why VW wasn't able to move any. They loaded it up with all these gizmos, and yet the gizmos didn't get you anywhere except a $15k jump in the sticker price.

I think a better comparison for what you're going for would be the Passat 2.0T versus the CC 2.0T. Yes, both cars cost about the same, drive about the same, and even get the same gas mileage while using the same parts underneath. But, by days end, you pay a fee (up front) to lose a seat, a bunch of headroom, and ultimately get nothing in return. Problem with that example is that the CC is a design exercise that works; Not only does it look drop-dead gorgeous, its still "affordable" at $26K. That, and the overall sacrifices are minimal.

Isn't that the niche that the X5 is already supposed to fill?

Both the X5M and X6M violate everything BMW's M-division was supposed to stand for. They were constantly quoted "no more automatic transmissions" and "no SUV's", for at least the last 10 years. But lo and behold, Porsche creates a sales leader with the Cayenne and Mercedes-Benz releases a brace of AMG SUV's which sell...well enough. Money gets you everything.

I'm sure these will sell well, go well, and scare the hell out of blue-rinsers on both continents. But are they really M vehicles? Hardly. Just because they have a wonderful (if not really all that innovative) engine and a great team to help make both vehicles not completely sodden, they're about as far from sports cars as their competitors.

However, if you manage to crash one, I'd love to be on the shortlist for your drivetrain....

Ah. But the Cayenne stole that market. Thus, BMW counters with an even more pointless vehicle.

I recognize the sheer insanity/inanity/idiocy of the idea of having a 2+2 sports coupe ride six feet off the ground, but the execution itself is brilliant.

Yes, the Cayenne has the X6 completely beaten on interior ambience, but the X6 comes in at a good price point (not much more than the X5) and works very well. I've driven it back to back with a 6-series (itself a pointless car), and it drives just as well... or better... depending on the situation. The X6 just feels much more lithe than a Cayenne (bar, I suppose, the expensive GTS, but I haven't driven that one in anger) and looks much less like a squatting frog... which is about the only objection I have to the Porsche truck.

Yes, the X5 should handle as well with the same specs... which would require widening the track, lowering the vehicle, and lopping a few inches off the roof.

-

I know the X6 is a love it / hate it affair. And I'm as anti-SUV as the next guy. Can't stand them. But I absolutely love the X6. Simply because it feels nothing like an SUV.

Both BMW SUVs feel more like old-fashioned muscle cars... but with tighter dynamics. Yes, the 5-series is a much better driver's car than either, but I've never really liked the looks of the current 5, even in M5 form... and the 7-series drives like crap compared to the X5. So do many "cars".

-

But there is no way in hell anyone could honestly give a utilitarian reason for buying an X5/X6/Cayenne/Whatever over, say, a Toyota Landcruiser (if you actually need to go off-road) or a seven-seat minivan (if you don't). These purchases are made simply because you have the money and you want one.

Where the Cayenne beat the X5 here was that it was a more desirable nameplate... never mind the weird looks... which made sales. The X6 brings more drama to the equation... whether such silly season cars can survive a financial crisis, I don't know, but if people can justify a V8 Hemi "muscle car" that handles like a boat and gets roughly the same fuel consumption by saying the sound and looks make them feel good, suffice to say, a twin-turbodiesel straight six X6 has both the verve and looks to make me feel good.

I know, as being one of those who formerly despised the words "weight", "power" and "size", this is somewhat hypocritical, but sue me, sportscars and sportscar buying are almost entirely subjective.
