You're all wrong. Including you Fred.
The RX-8's power rating has been lowered from 246hp to 238. Mazda is offering to do one of 2 things for owners who bought the car from the release date to sometime earlier in August/July:
1. Buy back the car giving the owner thier full money back.
2. Give the owner a $500 debit card and free servicing.
I've talked to 2 RX-8 owners on IM, one of which lives right by me and bought his RX-8 from Fusz, and my dad did the PDI(Post Delivery Inspection) on it. Both of them did not notice a power loss, and also stated that they don't mind since the car is not meant for straightline speed, and the handling more than makes up for any loss of power if there is a loss of power.
Overall, I think Mazda did the correct thing by offering something for the owners, when they honestly didn't have to do it.
Also, this power rating issue only accounts for the RX-8, all of the other Mazda models, including the Miata, have thier correct horse power. And there will be a new RX-7, this 8hp discrepency will not greatly affect a new Mazda model. Also, the power of the RX-8 Standard was changed from 187hp to 197hp.
Punk's just a typical naysayer because he's got a fast straightline car and can't accept that any car, meant for straightline or not, isn't rated correctly. But he's not an owner, so why should we care what he thinks? Sure, Mazda screwed up. Not big time. A small mistake taken out of context as a major malfuction. Now then, if, say, the RX-8 had a safety issue that could result in major injuries and/or a fatality, that's a big time screw up.
8hp isn't much at all, and the owners have a choice. If they want to keep the car they can and they get money/servicing. If they detest the car based on a miniscule rating difference, they can sell it back to Mazda and get thier money back. This shouldn't sway anyone's thought of the car. I suggest you test drive one first.
