License test question

This isn't relative to any specific test, but rather several we've run across so far. In some of the one lap tests (we're up to iB), you follow a Skyline pace car. Every time I've passed the car I fail the test. The only option seems to be to hang back behind 'em and just drive the track...but in doing so, we can only ever seem to get a bronze.

Can someone who reads Japanese / Chinese tell us what the heck we're supposed to do?

Can't wait for the US release. While playing the Japanese version is fun, we have to do a lot of guessing.

Hi,

The speed of the pace car depends on you, so the faster you are the faster he is. Yes, but there are certain parts of the track where the pace car is slower and you cannot pass/hit him.

I have gotten Golds for all B,A,IB,IA already (but 0% in game progress). Half way done with Super License and you'll be happy to know that there is no Pace Car in Super License tests...

Thanks, Salamander. All bronze here! :) Just like school... "D" is for "Diploma" hahahah ;)

When I get the US version I'll probably spend a bit more time on the tests. As long as there's no "backwards" GT40 in Seattle I'll be ok!

It’s a great shame that the pace car is not optional as in the GT Concept licence tests. If you are aiming for anything above bronze, it is unlikely that you will need a pace car to show you the way. I was hoping that I was somehow missing the Chinese command to switch it off. Grrr

In some of the tracks the Pace car is useful, not for the racing line but for a good slipstream down the straight.... good example is the Nurburgring on IA-15, you'll know what I mean when you get there.

When I get there? I obtained the special licence on the 30th of December 2004…

I continue believe that it should be switchable. For those who contest the licences, having the pace car adds an unnecessary variable.

Oh... I thought you (Samberto) just started, my bad.... You have all golds in Super/Special License as well? You should join the db.granturismo.de database, those guys are FAST!

I am two golds short in the S licence. However, I am quite a way off challenging the likes of Honey Car…

I spent about 4 hours and breezed through all the license tests in GT4, mostly bronzing them, maybe 30 silver and 8 golds, most I passed on the first or second try. For me to do that makes them way to easy, not that I suck but I am not that fast either. I can't say I enjoyed any of the tests much. I'll go back and gold them off eventually but I like to open up the game first and race. I've always done it that way.

The GT4p license tests were much more interesting and alot more challenging. I must have spent a good solid month trying to pass them all the first time around about a year ago. Then much more time golding them all over the fall.

Even the GT3 tests were harder...I still have nightmares about one or two of them to this day. haha.

GT3 tests were very hard. GT4P were pretty hard, gave you a challenge, but after a 10 or so attempts on some you could get gold. They were the best yet.

Hi,

Hmm... I have gotten all golds in GT3, but I do think getting golds in GT4 license tests is a bit harder. Here are two examples I can think of on top of my head (Gold License in mind of course).

1) IA-15 Nurburgring. About 9 minutes of intense concentration, worrying about bumping into the pacecar, bumps upsetting balance of car, need to slipstream/draft for more speed. This test is not hard, but very intimidating.... :)

2) IA-16 Nissan 390 at LeMans. Critical Throttle control out of those 2nd gear turns, literally have to feather the gas.

P.S. I'm using a DS2 joypad. Looking at the db.granturismo.de database it seems like most of the fast guys are using the wheel. Still debating on getting the wheel or not.

I need to ask another question :)

In GT4 are the licence tests like GT3, as in, A - B - IA - IB - S - R? Also how many tests are in each?

16 tests for each license. 5 Licenses (B, A, I-B, I-A, S). There are 2-3 Rally tests within each license.

Thanks very much Salamander :)

I can't wait to get the game, but need to finish GT3 first.

So you don't have to get a seperate Rally license this time? Shame...

80 tests! Everytime I think I have my head around how big GT4 is, it just expands even more...

Think I might do all my license's before starting on anything else and saving it for future use - I quite fancy the idea of redoing GT3 but I don't want to have to get the Toyota GT1 around Monaco again... took me ages as I often have trouble with RWD cars on a DualShock2...

80 tests ? I'm arleady having nightmares about licenses :/
I hate tests...

It's not so bad. I did the first 3 x 16 tests in one setting.. Didn't take more than a couple of hours...

well it's suppose to have more tests, since it has more cars and more tracks. tests are a very nice thing, as you can learn to get the corners just right.

The whole point of the license tests is to make you a competent driver. If you get all bronze or silver then you are a competent driver who deserves the right to drive most cars in the game. If you get all gold in the license tests then you are a good driver and can drive any car in the game reasonably close to it's limit.

If you can't pass the license tests, it's not because 'I don't like license tests' or 'license tests just aren't me'. It's because 'I'm not good enough, and I really should get better'.

Good it will make winning the final license all the more sweeter.

Just makes it that much harder, but oh so fun, lol.

That's your opinion & you're entitled to it...doens't mean I like it! LOL!
But you are entitled to it none the less! ;-)

Hmmm, although I'm very excited about the license tests, I think they're a very fun part of the game, I have some doubts about how I will perform at them.

I notice people are saying they're supper easy or much more easy than the tests in GT3. But a few are saying that some tests are even more difficult this time. It strikes me curious that all the people who said it was harder were using the DS2. So, anybody here, who has the wheel and is good with the DS2, can please report on how difficult or easy it is obtaining gold licenses in GT4 with both the wheel and the DS2?

I don't like the fact that you get a car simply for getting your licence, even if you get all-Bronze. Getting a car for all-Silver is good, but getting one for simply acquiring the licence seems like PD is rewarding those who couldn't care less about developing their skills (plus they can sell the cars and get more money to begin with). And the cars that you get don't seem to be as good as the ones you won in the previous games. I also noticed that for such a 'rare' car, the Nike One '22 is very easy to get. I thought it would be harder than simply acquiring the IB Licence ...

Do you race?

No, I don't think you can sell them. Well, you can, but you don't get any money if you do. Than't my understanding. I could be wrong, because I don't have the game.

I think there is a correlation, but it's not the one you are thinking of. I don't think it's a case of having a wheel rather than a DS2 makes the tests easier.

I think it's a case of people who have the wheel tend to be more hardcore, experienced, better drivers, than people who just have a DS2.

Basically, the people who use a wheel find the tests easier because they are better drivers, not because the wheel makes it any easier.

hmm... the only reason I don't have a wheel is because of my GF. :guilty:

For me personally, I like challenging myself and comparing my times to others. Getting a Gold license is all about 95% perfection of that particular section/hotlap. When you know that your time for a particular test is faster than anyone else (I'm refering to db.granturismo.de) then you know the time you achieved is close to perfection. That's the satisfaction I get out of the game...
