Linux: Anyone use it?

I recommend everyone at least tries a form of Linux. Create a Thread and we will all help you install it. Most new Linux distros are very easy to install and use. You can even dual boot which means you can keep Windows and Linux at the same time.

I have an old P4 2.2 lurking around somewhere in my house.
I'm gonna take your suggestion and start fidling with it. My inner geek (NID) is waking up again! 👍

Edit: Let's start here, and give me a populair form of Linux, and I will download it.

I agree although it might be a bit too much for your PC to handle. Can you give us rough specs of what you think your PC has?

He says he has a P4 2.2GHz. That is more than enough for the minimum requirements below.

System requirements
A Pentium II or Celeron system with 128 MB of RAM is probably a bottom-line configuration that may yield slow yet usable system with Lubuntu. It should be possible to install and run Lubuntu with less memory, but the result will likely not be suitable for practical use.

Main reason why I suggested it is it will make any computer run fast that is above the minimum requirements, looks like Windows and is fully supported and updated.

P4 2.2mhz, 1gb ram. Seeing above post it should be more than enough.

Downloading Lubuntu as we speak. Shame it's already 0.15 here, otherwise I started out tonight with installing!

2.6mb wireless download. Meh.

Well I didn't know the amount of ram he had. his 1GB should be more than enough.

I hope everything goes smoothly. Most ubuntu distros leave a good first impression.

Should run super fast. If you want more eye candy, get the Ubuntu version or Xubuntu or Kubuntu but I personally prefer Lubuntu as it is functional for what I need Linux for.

Should not take long to install, about 20 minutes IIRC if you are tempted to install now. You don't have to install it to test, you can boot from USB or CD if you want and try it out quickly or just leave it till tomorrow. One thing I would recommend to do is update it after installing and also install the Ubuntu Software Center using the Synaptic Package Manager.

It is highly unlikely a P4 computer would not meet the minimum requirements regarding ram on such a distro unless all of the ram was taken out of the computer ;).

They do leave good first impression. I might buy a low capacity SSD for my computer and install Lubuntu on it as a quick web browsing OS.

I'm burning as we speak, the P4 is standing ready to go.
I couldn't wait.

If I run into any snags with installing I will ask you geeks guys.

Corrected ;).

I just remembered something, when it comes to formatting, add a / in the path name or whatever it is.

That's what I thought, I've burned it at 4x, so that isn't it.

I'm going to give it 1 more go with the cd, if it fails I'll burn another, or can I install it from USB?

Edit:

EDD Error 8000 reading sector 302326.

I get an error.

Uncompression error. System halted.
Burning fail, I suppose?

Could be bad ram or burning fail. You could always put it on USB and install from it if your motherboard supports USB booting in bios settings. USB instructions here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download. Just select Lubuntu on the dropdown box instead of Ubuntu on the software they recommend you to use. You will know what I mean when you see the instructions.

I have the 5 walking dots of Lubuntu, so it seems to be working. Fingers crossed.

Edit 1
I got stuck at the screen where you put your username etc.
Lubuntu told me every name of my computer was already known on the network. Untill I changed my log in.

Edit 2
The P4 sounds like it wants to barrel down a runway. Strange.

So is everything working now?

It's installing, still. But it seems to go fine. From the usbstick. 👍

Oh, and the pc only has 512mb. I butchered the other 512 for an other pc.

20gb disk.

I have bigger usbsticks and flashcards than that disk.

Edit
It's done, it's now installing updates.
I can't wait to fiddle around.

Enjoy. Remember to install Ubuntu Software Center if you want a utility to easily install and find software. You can install LibreOffice if you want more advanced office suite. I guess you don't plan on using it for them purposes though, instead just for a quick mess around some Linux OS ;).

Well, I need to do some reading into Linux, because I can't even get Firefox to install.
And I need a driver for a 3d prophet II mx400 32mb. 640x480 doesn't work well with me.

But it's 3.34am right now, I need to get me some sleep, my alarm goes off at 09.00...
If anybody has a simple explanation for my issues, please post them here!

Looks like you will be stuck using Unity 2D then (Your GPU is an old relic). I had a PC similar to your specs. Let me just tell you, its NOT going to be as fast at you may think it will be. I reccomend going higher on the RAM, and maybe even OC your CPU. And let me tell you, installing packages and opening the software centre might be slow... at least it was for my Celeron D OCd to 3.3Ghz. I had 750ish MB RAM and a Radeon 7200. However, if you want somehing simple and fast, try the XFCE desktop interface. All you need to to is type in something like this in terminal:

sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

I used to run it on a Pentium 3 400Mhz PC that used a Slot CPU socket type.

I use (or will use) Linux on my new MineCraft server. I havn't had any experiance with it yet, but I will post here once I do.

System I'll run it on:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (2.6GHz)
4GB (4x1GB) DDR2 800Mhz RAM
ASUS M2X8 Motherboard

There's actually this: http://mineos.codeemo.com/

Might be better than just Linux by itself with Minecraft being ran in it.

I'd beg to differ, as the website itself states:
I do not believe MineOS CRUX is the only server distro you should consider using to host Minecraft--quite the opposite: MineOS simply demonstrates what components make for a solid, stable server; it aims to include all the functionality a Minecraft admin should have while trimming out all the fat.

I'd beg to differ, as the website itself states:

That statement basically says that it'd be better than running Vanilla Linux with Minecraft inside of it. Having something like MineOS CRUX would be better as it's tailored towards the purpose of running the server.

I'm not even sure why you're trying to pick an argument right now.

Like I mentioned before install the Ubuntu Software Center using the Synaptic Package Manager. Should come up when you search for it. It is good to refresh for new packages too. Once you have installed Ubuntu Software Center, it makes finding and installing apps as simple as like any app store on a mobile phone.

About your graphics card, try this step by step.

He is running Lubuntu and LXDE. It should definately run fast, it runs fast on pretty much anything. Ram is more than enough, even his orginal 512mb ram would still make for a fast user experience.

Well that is supported by pretty much a one man crew and not by a whole community like the Ubuntu server is supported from. I'd guess that is one reason why NissanSkylineN1 is worried about it. Maybe the creator might think of giving up support since his only support is from money from his own support(regular work) and donations.

Me personally I'm going to run a virtual machine on my computer and see how that works out.

Oh I do like the look of MineOS. I'll defernatly be using that on the server. SOOO much simpler than having to do everything through the console on Vanilla Linux.

VMware is being too annoying so I'm using VirtualBox which I know which works since I used it years ago. Currently making a 40GB virtual HDD on my hard drive(not using my SSD since that is short on space and a server on that would reduce it's life greatly). Once I get the kinks worked out I'll want to test this MineOS to see how it works as an virtual machine.

Been using Linux since about 1997.

Currently using a mix of Ubuntu and Redhat distro's for work. I was using Ubuntu on all my systems, but have recently been in kind of a limbo because I really don't like Unity and I feel that Gnome 3.X isn't mature enough yet. I'm back on Windows for now, and playing around with other distro's to find one I like for Desktop use. Currently using Crunchbang to see how I like it.

Lubuntu does not use any form of Unity it uses LXDE.
