RUFs are hardly the poor mans porsche. Presuming the car in question is the Yellowbird, there were only a handful that were built from scratch and the rest were tuned 911's that customers brought it.

So naturally, you have the base cost of the 911 plus the price you pay RUF to do the work.

Check your privileges, as I believe the kids are saying these days.

I think instead of jumping to conclusions, we need more detail.. He ask for the "poor mans 911" everyone jumps to RUF which is a high end car... Sooo.... I don't believe he is talking about a Porsche at all.. After all we are all familiar with the poor mans Ferrari = Pontiac Fiero .. I'm trying to think of something in the 80's that looks similar to the Porsche but I'm not sure? Lol the 4wd beetle naturally jumps into mind but that's a lot newer..

Alpine A110 1600S '73 is RR & looks somewhat like a 911.

Without the Rufs Alpine seems the best bet.
