I think it would be a good idea if they chose one interior from an existing premium car, say the Volkswagen Golf GTI '01, or any other premium car with an interior that would look fit in many other cars, and use that interior for most or all of the standards. Then, for the more unusual standards or the supercars, they could use an interior from a premium supercar, like the Acura NSX. Just a thought.

EDIT : It would also be neat if you could hang fuzzy dice from your mirror or hang an air freshener up there, or put a hula figurine on the dashboard, or get a silly looking cover for your steering wheel. It would do wonders for car customization.

All they need is a laser scanner to generate the polygons on the cars in my opinion.

couldn't care less about that. I don't use interior driving at all

All gauges to function and an adjustable seat ( so to speak ) and i would be happy.

Edit: just realized this thread is mainly about standards.

I like the premium mazda rx --- standard mazda rx type copy paste idea. There are enough similar cars to make it work. Race cars may be tougher though.

If you look closely to the "Black interior"

You will be able to notice every car is different and you can see the steering wheel and hand motion, which means it was the base of the detail premium view, without the hood in the front of cause.

So in the near future, PD might put another layer over for the details instead of black.

I don't think laser scanning would be the fastest method here. First of all they would need to get hold of each car they want to scan (800 cars, that would easily take 3 years just to get hold of the cars and use them for only one day each). And even if they manage to do the laser scanning, which would be extremely complicated from inside a car, they would still need to fix everything that the laser didn't catch, for instance everything that was on the shadow side of the laser (like the backside of the steering wheel and everything behind it, everything behind anything that is not a smooth surface). I think it would be much faster to just use reference photos and model the interiors based on those. It would probably still take a couple of years, depending on how much detail they want to put in the standard cockpits.

I just noticed today they driver actually shifts the car now in the standard cars. It wasn't like that a couple of days ago.

To the very least, An interior steering wheel would help.
